Updated 4:45 PM ET, Wed January 13, 2021 Chiwetel Ejiofor and Anne Hathaway in Locked Down. (CNN)Anyone who has felt their relationship tested by quarantine (no need to raise hands, we see you) will at least partially relate to Locked Down, which takes the idea of a couple trapped by those circumstances, then builds an improbable heist plot around it. Thanks to Chiwetel Ejiofor and Anne Hathaway it s mildly watchable, but mostly an artifact that might look better after a few years in the Covid time capsule. The film is notably just the latest attempt to corral the strangeness of the pandemic and turn that into drama, including a number of limited series and specials made for TV and streaming. The main difference here involves the marquee stars (plus some amusing Zoom-call cameos), working with The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman (whose most germane credit here might be Mr. & Mrs. Smith ) and writer Steven Knight ( Peaky Blinders ). ....
January 27 You’re going to start seeing movies and television that were “bravely” filmed during the swirling, imposing pandemic. The kind that make the virus part of the plot. But as the onslaught of oh-so-topical projects starts to hit our screens, one question will remain for the those in search of quality entertainment: Why, when the excellent Michael Sheen/David Tennant production Staged exists on Hulu, would we ever put ourselves through the tired and unremarkable Locked Down with Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor now streaming on HBO Max? The short answer is that we shouldn’t. The longer answer has something to do with Hathaway s Linda and Ejiofor s Paxton, a well-to-do American/English couple living in London who split up just as the UK COVID-19 lockdowns come into effect. We observe the aftermath. The well-to-do bit has everything to do with Linda s CEO position with some international company called Miracore. She s racked with doubt. P ....
Director Doug Liman’s Locked Down is a romantic comedy where you hope the couple breaks up, and a heist-thriller so contrived and lacking in tension (and intelligence and excitement), you hope everyone gets caught. Linda (Anne Hathaway) and Paxton (Chiwetel Ejiofor) were a loving and adventurous couple for ten years. Then, just after they decided to break up, the coronavirus hit London. Now they’re locked down together. Then, after 90 minutes of awful “relationship” dialogue and a dreadful performance from Ms. Hathaway, a whole bunch of coincidences lead them to steal a diamond worth three-million pounds from Harrods Department Store. ....
Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor In Locked Down 1/14/2021 Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor play a couple heading for breakup when the opportunity for a diamond heist presents itself during pandemic lockdown in Doug Liman s crime comedy. Perhaps there’ll come a time a few years from now, once the bludgeoning monotony of pandemic confinement has (hopefully) become a fading memory, when the claustrophobic agitation of Doug Liman s smugly self-satisfied heist thingamajig, Locked Down, could be vaguely amusing. Or not. A lo-fi treatment of a high-concept crime rom-com deficient in sexual chemistry, laughs and suspense, this is a grating stunt in which actors who ought to know better, led by Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor, play synthetically movie-ish characters meant to tickle us with the all-too-real trials of the COVID era. If you still think frozen screens and kids disrupting Zoom business calls are a hoot, it s all yours. ....
With Ejiofor s Paxton furloughed and Hathaway s Linda forced to fire colleagues over Zoom meetings, the two find themselves trapped and warring, until they are presented with the opportunity to steal a £3 million ($4 million) diamond from the hallowed halls of luxury department store Harrods. In a newly released trailer, the pair can be seen behind the scenes at the Knightsbridge landmark, mandatory face masks in place. The film, directed by Mr and Mrs Smith s Doug Liman, is the first production to be shot in Harrods, a location only made viable courtesy of the store being shut to customers amid the pandemic. ....
