'Habagat' continues to bring rain showers across Luzon

(PNA photo by Alfred Frias) MANILA - Many areas in Luzon will continue to experience rain showers due to the southwest monsoon or habagat, the weather bureau said Tuesday. Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will prevail over Metro Manila, Region 4-A (Calabarzon), Region 4-B (Mimaropa), and the provinces of Bataan and Zambales. Flash floods or landslides are possible in these areas due to moderate to at times heavy rains, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said. In a late Monday advisory, PAGASA said Metro Manila, Bataan, Zambales, Batangas, Cavite, Occidental Mindoro, and northern Palawan including Calamian Islands may experience light to moderate, with at times heavy rains in the next 24 hours. P4.4 M worth of aid distributed to LGUs hit by 'Florita': DSWD

(File photo) MANILA - More than PHP4.4 million worth of food and non-food items were distributed to local government units (LGUs) affected by Tropical Storm Florita (international code name Ma-on), the Department of Social Welfare and Development said Thursday. Of this figure, the bulk of assistance worth PHP3.1 million was delivered in Region 2 (Cagayan Valley), the DSWD said in a press release. The rest were provided in Regions 1 (Ilocos Region), 3 (Central Luzon), Region 4-A (Calabarzon), and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). Meanwhile, the DSWD is also assisting LGUs in monitoring the condition of 669 families or 2,057 persons currently taking temporary shelter in 36 evacuation centers in the said regions. It also assured that the agency will continue to coordinate with concerned LGUs to ensure the sufficiency of resources for distribution to the affected population through its Field Offices (FOs). PH detects its first two cases of Omicron BA.2.75

MANILA - The country has logged its first two cases of Omicron BA.2.75 subvariant, the Department of Health (DOH) said Tuesday. In a press briefing, DOH officer-in-charge Ma. Rosario Vergeire said both cases were from Western Visayas and were already tagged as recovered. The BA.2.75 strain, unofficially dubbed "Centaurus", was first detected in India in May this year. About 1,015 additional BA.5 cases were also detected in all regions except in the Zamboanga Peninsula and Northern Mindanao and three returning overseas Filipinos tested for the subvariant. Of the tally, 883 have already recovered, while 84 are still undergoing isolation. The DOH is still verifying the status of the remaining 48 cases. There were also 26 new BA.4 cases detected. Rising positivity rate, daily cases 'no cause for alarm': OCTA

(PNA photo by Gil Calinga) MANILA - The increase in positivity rate or the number of people who test positive for Covid-19 in select areas nationwide is not a cause for alarm, the OCTA Research Group said Tuesday. In a televised public briefing, OCTA Research Group fellow Dr. Guido David said the National Capital Region, Region 4-A (Calabarzon), Central Luzon and the Visayas have recorded increases in positivity rate and coronavirus cases. In the past five consecutive days, the country has logged more than 2,000 new cases per day. David said that such figures are high but they "are not cause for alarm".
