Multimillion-dollar safety works to improve safety on dangerous Christchurch road

Initially 1km of guardrails were planned to be installed.
The work was included in NZTA’s Safer Networks Program, with contractor Higgins Constructions working on behalf of the council.
The council’s acting head of transport, Lynette Ellis, said the additional shoulder width was expected to “improve everyone’s safety and reduce conflict between road users”.
The steep terrain of the road meant crashes often resulted in severe injuries, which the guardrails aimed to reduce, she said.

Lisa Walker wants authorities to take action after she filmed a motorist driving on the wrong side of one of Christchurch’s most dangerous roads.
The 49-year-old Governors Bay resident said the driving left her “quite scared” and she believed it was just a matter of time before another person died on the road.
Walker said the incident happened while she was a passenger travelling from Governors Bay towards the Sign of the Kiwi about 8am on February 11.

A grieving mother has never visited the site where her son died in a crash that a coroner says highlights the dangers of excess speed.
Motorcyclist Kyle John McKitterick died after crashing into a van that turned in front of him on Dyers Pass Rd on November 10, 2018. The crash happened on his 48th birthday.
He was well known in the motorcycling community, and was described as a very experienced and skilled rider in findings released by coroner Marcus Elliott on Wednesday.
