The Commission Bill passed the house yesterday. 35 House Republicans voted yes. That is not a small number especially given the House Gop Leadership urging a no vote and the former president Donald Trump making clear this is a loyalty test. Democrats this morning sending a very clear message. My senate republican colleagues must now ask themselves are they going to join us in pursuing the truth . thank you. thank you. thank you. it is an honor to welcome everyone to the 71st national book awards. i am jason reynolds coming to you live from washington dc go this is overnight but there is so much going on in the world this is our night and it is a big deal. it is so much of a big deal i woke up this morning anxious and nervous as usual. i always, mother and i am anxious. it is 7:00 o clock in the morning and she says oh no i said i am feeling anxious about tonight have to hope the national book awards am calling you to see if you have advice for your child go she said that she always has been to make the call. let me ask you something, son. what did i make you say every single night before you got into bed when you were little boy? i said i don t want to do this right now she said no don t know what did i.c.e. make you say every night when you got into bed? i said you made me say i can do anything. exactly you can do anything. you tell me this all the time on. but i
[applause] the national book awards are a huge part of that mission, and it is a thrill to be here with everyone tonight recognizing exceptional literature and increasing the visibility of books which are among the most powerful weapons we have against what has lately felt like an often hostile world. i think this past year has felt overwhelming and disheartening to many people. it s also felt exhausting for women, for people of color, for immigrants, for muslims, for the lgbtq community, for so many groups. to remain on the defensive in nearly every waking hour takes its toll. for some of us, books provide a welcome escape into someone else s world. for others they serve as a valuable resource for arming ourselves with indispensabling knowledge of history. but all books offer something we need so desperately right now; broadened perspective. books allow us to view circumstances through the eyes of someone else. they cultivate empathy. they inspire action. they make us f

[applause] like most people here tonight i have always been an avid reader and i come from a family of avid readers and i have birthed at least one avid reader, the jury is still out on the younger ones. as an only child and the daughter of two only children it wasn t uncommon in our house to find everyone in separate corners, each of us buried in a book. huge nerds, you might have called us. it s a privilege to be in his room full of huge nerds. i feel right at home. my mother s father was a rare book dealer in chicago so the nerd gene goes back even farther in my family. one year there was a terrible fire and my grandfather store and the fire itself didn t reach the volume the fire hoses did. water, water, everywhere. his whole inventory ruins and my grandfather felt he had no choice but to close up shop. my grandparents packed up and moved to the ozarks in the heart of missouri where my grandmother was from and they both were effecti
