[applause] the National Book awards are a huge part of that mission, and it is a thrill to be here with everyone tonight recognizing exceptional literature and increasing the visibility of books which are among the most powerful weapons we have against what has lately felt like an often hostile world. I think this past year has felt overwhelming and disheartening to many people. Its also felt exhausting for women, for people of color, for immigrants, for muslims, for the lgbtq community, for so many groups. To remain on the defensive in nearly every waking hour takes its toll. For some of us, books provide a welcome escape into someone elses world. For others they serve as a valuable resource for arming ourselves with indispensabling knowledge of history. But all books offer something we need so desperately right now; broadened perspective. Books allow us to view circumstances through the eyes of someone else. They cultivate empath ....
Next on booktv, jesmyn ward discusses her memorialrys about growing up poor in mississippi and the deaths of five men from her hometown that she was close to, including her younger brother. She talks about the circumstances of their deaths and the role that race, poverty, and lack of opportunity played their early demise. This is about 15 minutes. [applause] its good to be here. I as i talk to more people about the memoir, i always say, inevitably, talk to someone about it and i say its the hardest book if a ever written and i never want to write not memoir ever again because it was so hard, and i always laugh after i say it. But even though it was very difficult, i still believe in i believe in the book. I believe that it tells a story that is worth telling. And that in the end, its tempting to Say Something important. So even though it was very hard for me, i dont regret it. I just know that i wont hopefully do it again. So i i f ....
