[laughter] but the interest is always there and so when this book came out it was like when i heard about it i said we have to do it. We cannot do it i hadnt read it i didnt know what she had to say and i thought this is one of the most important bocks that well see this year. That was corroborated by National Book foundation who long listed 1 fern no vote for National Book award. Yep. Please clap for carol. [applause] this book is hard this is wonderful and teachers you so much and so little space i think there are 100 footnotes in the first chapter. Seriously, and it is one of those books that you can read and reread and reread and you will find threads and Different Things that you missed first time through. She not only contributed greatly to our democracy, but show was also an embodiment of the american dream. Her family fled prague to escape the nazis when she was just it years old. They returned after the war and then had to flee again when communists overthrew the government. Throughout her diplomatic career, she focused on spreading democracy around the world, especially by expanding nato which President Biden emphasized in his eulogy, but she knew that democracy was fragile, and towards the end of her life she warned about the return of the global danger of Fascism Riding in her book aptly named fascism, a warning that some may view the book and title as alarmist, good. We should be awake to the assault on Democratic Values that has gathered strength in many countries abroad and is dividing america as home. [applause] like most people here tonight i have always been an avid reader and i come from a family of avid readers and i have birthed at least one avid reader, the jury is still out on the younger ones. as an only child and the daughter of two only children it wasn t uncommon in our house to find everyone in separate corners, each of us buried in a book. huge nerds, you might have called us. it s a privilege to be in his room full of huge nerds. i feel right at home. my mother s father was a rare book dealer in chicago so the nerd gene goes back even farther in my family. one year there was a terrible fire and my grandfather store and the fire itself didn t reach the volume the fire hoses did. water, water, everywhere. his whole inventory ruins and my grandfather felt he had no choice but to close up shop. my grandparents packed up and moved to the ozarks in the heart of missouri where my grandmother was from and they both were effecti
