A Marietta man with an “extensive criminal history” received a total of 53 months in prison for four separate cases Tuesday afternoon.
Matthew Jones, 36, of 806 Front St., was sentenced to 30 months in prison for possession of a deadly weapon while under detention, a third-degree felony; to run consecutively with 11 months in prison for attempted robbery, a fourth-degree felony; to run consecutively with 12 months for escape, a third-degree misdemeanor; which will run concurrently with 12 months for failure to appear as required by recognizance, a fourth-degree felony. ....

Court adapts to pandemic, cases progress | News, Sports, Jobs


Despite COVID restrictions, court cases are still moving forward at the Washington County Courthouse.
Several cases, including those of Kendall Richards and Devin Lindsey, were completed this year, with others extending into the new year.
“Ones that are more complicated are being continued,” said Washington County Prosecutor Nicole Coil. “A lot was not (completed) because trials ceased after March and we’ve had one trial since then. There hasn’t been much since COVID.”
She said they’ve tried to keep cases moving forward and when possible, reach pleas, but all attorneys are very concerned and hesitant to hold trials in COVID circumstances. ....

A Whipple woman is allowed to spend Christmas at home with her jail time deferred Wednesday in Washington County Common Pleas Court until after the new year.
Cheyann N. Martinez, 32, of 80 Railroad St., was initially arrested on three charges of theft and one of attempted murder by the Washington County Sheriff’s office, but upon prosecutorial review of the charges, she was indicted only for one fifth-degree felony (theft) and one first-degree misdemeanor (aggravated menacing). ....
