paul ryan is trying to dismiss the shocking defeat for republicans. we re back with the panel. republicans are offering all kinds of excuses for conor lamb s apparent victory in pennsylvania 18. he ran as a republican. the republican candidate, rick ciccone, was a lousy candidate. in the end, how big a deal is the democratic victory in this very readie reddistrict? it s a big deal. i accept a lot of that. we had a terrible candidate and they had a candidate who is not likely to make it through the democratic primary this year, anti-gun control, pro life, said he wasn t running against donald trump, a marine, a prosecutor, culturally conservative. but republicans had better use this as a wake-up call and make certain that every one of their candidates does everything better this year, from raising money, having a constructive message that it s not rick ciccone ran as trump 2.0.

make a good duck gumbo? i ve looked at the candidates. ted cruz is my man. he fits the bill. he s godly. he loves us. he s the man for the job. and he will go duck hunting. because today we re going. ted cruz is my man. i m voting for him. cruz, the reason we re going to vote for you, all of us, is because you re one of us, my man. thank you. that s why we re voting for you. it s now or never. i have not seen a better republican presidential campaign ad this year. whatever you think of phil robertson or of ted cruz, or of ted cruz s shooting at ducks technique, i think it is not hard to imagine that this will be a very effective political ad for the ted cruz campaign. particularly in states with lots of culturally conservative,
the first debate i won every single poll, where they did polls on who won the debate. yeah. i would say i was not asked the nicest questions. i would say the questions, you know, they were a little bit, in my opinion tricky. they were unfair, but these are minor details. you know, we get the sense there is not a lot of preparation that donald trump does. is that the right call? well, look, i mean, first of all, you know the obligatory caveat that we need is that, at this point in 2011, rick perry, who dropped out of the race yesterday, was ahead in the polls. in 2007, rudy giuliani was ahead and both ended up leaving the polls. but donald trump has built a significant base in the republican party, support across the party, but especially with blue collar republicans, noncollege republican, extraordinary numbers in a field this big. recent polls he s running 40% among noncollege republican men who are very unhappy about the economy, culturally conservative, very ail yent
disparity is between the social and financial ideologies, and that s there. and 86% want more individual accountability. this is very much a personal responsibility, pick yourself up off the bootstraps kind of thing. then your pickup truck populace. we told you for a long time, culturally conservative, the old reagan democrats, probably another way to put it. predominantly white working class. 80% of them not graduated from college, blue-collar type folks, live in the rural south and the midwest, very pessimistic about the economy. this is the anti-washington and anti-wall street group that sits in the middle here. almost half of them say d.c. doesn t represent their values. and 64% said government should be doing more. this is a big difference. yes, culturally conservative, but they want government involved to sort of help create a level playing field if you remember some of those talking points in the 2012 campaign. then there s our turtle group. we call them the whatever man. and we
