i m chris matthews on veterans day up here in boston. let me start tonight with this. it s a war of the worlds. one world is where you live. for you, america is a land of many people and many places. there s the deep south of cotton fields and warm summers. there s the california coast of sunny beaches and highways. there are rural areas where agriculture is king, a magnet for those ready for hard work. there are big cities in this world of yours, chicago, new york, miami, all rich in ethnicity and spicy in their diversity. there are suburbs where people take a tolerant view, where the prevalent attitude is live and let live. in this america, your america, there are whites, blacks, latinos, people whose families came here from the asian pacific. there are progressives, moderates, and conservatives all engaged in a running argument about the kind of country they want to live in. the role they want this country playing around the globe. how we ought to be protecting ourselves. okay. that
in the united states and around the world. i m wolf blitzer. you re in the situation room. the race for president of the united states is getting more brutal by the day. we begin this hour with mitt romney responding to a firestorm of controversy, surrounding his taxes and his time at bain capital. and he s accusing the obama campaign of stooping to a new low. our national political correspondent jim acosta had a chance on friday to interview romney. it was an excellent interview. thank you. and there were some real nuggets that we got out of it. that s right, wolf. the main issue we wanted to get to wasis role at bain capital and when he left that private investment firm. we asked mitt romney why his name still appears on government documents as the ceo of bain capital after 1999, the year he has said he left the company. that i left any role at bain capital in february of 99. and that s known and said by the people at the firm. it s said by the documents, off

it s my sense now that they re beefing up the second half of their ticket. biden s on the ticket clearly. he made it clear today. and they want him to play the role of scranton oshkosh, destroyer of mitt romney. well, you re right. that s the crescent, chris. it goes through pennsylvania, through ohio, illinois, michigan, and so on. the battleground states where blue-collar workers, middle class, blue-collar workers are the key. culturally conservative, yet traditionally responsive to a democratic message. it s fascinating to watch the white house try to occupy the middle ground on private enterprise. ion you know, mitt romney is claiming he s the guy who s going to turn around the private sector because he was in the private sector. but the white house is not going to sit back and take that argument at face value. they re going to say, no, no, we actually care about the private sector, because we went in and did things like saving the auto industry. so it s game on in terms of who c
