good afternoon. supervisor haney. we have a quorum. we will go to the next item of business. before we do that, i would like to open this meeting with the tribute to ann halstead who passed away on march 13th. for those who knew here and cared about her, she was a former tida board member before my time. she served many years on the commission. when she passed away she was vice chair and also a member of the mp c, regional perhaps it board. she lived a life to make better the neighborhood, city, region. involved with 20 organization this is her lifetime all unpaid, all in the service of creating a better san francisco and region. ann and i sat on boards of many nonprofit organizations, chinatown development corporation, we shared similar passions. great cities, vibrant waterfront, open space and parks. working with her on these mutual passions i found her to be always wise in her council, knowledgeable about organizational challenges, astute about the political la ....

the mayor s offices of the neighborhoods, program which is under oewdn. i think they will have a lot of advice to add. obviously, they are usually dealing with existing neighborhoods and communities in how they can help those neighborhoods. this is a unique situation where we build up a new neighborhood. there are a lot of important lessons there. from my experience on the private side and also as planner, i think there is a important distinction between destination retail and neighborhoods serving retail. from your presentation it makes sense. the areas highlighted in pink is appropriate. keep in mind that doesn t mean just because you have a robust destination retail plan that it would serve the local community, and i think that echoes some of the director s comments around focusing on the ground floor retail and the first floor apartment buildings and what we are doing there. that is where the neighborhood serving retail needs to be. i am sure you are aware of this a ....

there is just some requirements i ve worked around it a little bit. but i do think that child care would be very important. we do have some on-island services already, but we re expecting the island to have a lot more families in the future. and we just want to make sure we re not repeating some of the same issues that we have, you know, in the mainland of san francisco where we have child care wait lists, and the wait lists are 2,000 people. okay, great. and then let s see.i m also curious you cited examples, like mercy and other existing commercial uses on the island. and i ve often wondered about whether or not those existing restaurants, which are great, and i go to them, but i wonder what the proportion of local islanders residing on the island are really using those restaurants and retail versus people who are coming from outside of the island? and just be cognizant i think it would be very important for us to make sure we have retail and restaurants ....
