Denver-based chef Richard Sandoval is ready to open his next DC project: dLeña, a modern Mexican restaurant and mezcaleria that’s opening in Mount Vernon Triangle very soon. The restaurateur, who operates over 45 concepts worldwide, became a presence in Washington with the opening of Zengo in 2005 and Masa 14 in 2009 (both have closed). He also runs two DC locations of El Centro D.F., which serves tacos and Mexican small plates; Latin grill Toro Toro in downtown DC; and La Sandia in Tysons.
Minneapolis, MN – Amba
One of chef Douglas Katz’s ghost kitchens will materialize into its own physical restaurant location later this year. Amba, an Indian-fusion restaurant, is set to open in October or early November at 1430 W. 28th Street. Katz has been running Amba as a takeout and delivery-only restaurant since November, alongside his other ghost kitchen Chimi, a South American-influenced concept. ....

Passing of the torch: Tommy's Country Ham House becomes Lewis Barbecue

The significance of the moment was not lost on the people involved, but to many passing by on the busy Rutherford corridor there was nothing strange about the smells of barbecue wafting through the air.
On Saturday, Tommy Stevenson, owner of Tommy’s County Ham House publicly handed over his restaurant space to John Lewis, owner of Lewis Barbecue. For now, Tommy’s story isn’t over just yet, the restaurant will remain open until May 30, but there was a significance in the moment. The start of archiving 36 years, and the beginning of a new story.
Just before guests arrived to what was being called the Passing of the Torch ceremony Saturday evening, Stevenson and Lewis appeared to have an easy banter. Stevenson shared stories about Tommy’s, the two traded experiences navigating the current staffing challenges and discussed the beauty of a perfectly designed, big kitchen. ....

Greenville businessman Tommy Stevenson selected to Furman Hall of Fame

Tommy s Country Ham House founder Tommy Stevenson now has another honor before he closes up shop to go with the many he has accumulated through his decades of business in Greenville: He will be inducted into the Furman University Athletic Hall of Fame.Furman announced Thursday that Stevenson, a 1965 graduate, will join two soccer greats and an influential cross-country/track and field head coach as part of the university s Hall of Fame Class of 2021.Soccer All-American Shea Salinas, 2008, two-time Southern Conference Soccer Player of the Year Stephanie Devita, 2016, and former head coach Bill Keesling will share the honor.Read more on the inductees here.Ceremonies are expected next spring but details about the occasion have yet to be announced.The university will induct the Hall of Fame Class of 2020 this fall a ceremony that was postponed due to the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic. Law enforcement officers bid farewell to Tommy's Country Ham House

He also received a plaque from all law enforcement officers, donated in part by Cowart Awards.
More than 60 officers, from as far away as Florida, returned to Tommy s Country Ham House for Tuesday s event.
Stevenson, who has run the restaurant since 1985, said it’s been a pleasure serving officers over the years. He said he appreciates what they’ve done to put their lives at stake every night, going out without their wives and families knowing if they’ll be coming back.
“I would serve them anytime they’d come in,” Stevenson said. “I always tried to take care of them. They’ve been a big part of my life.” ....

After more than three decades of hosting presidential candidates testing their mettle among voters in the first-in-the-South primary state of South Carolina, the Greenville landmark, Tommy s Country Ham House, is turning off the fryer and shutting its doors.
On Sunday, owner Tommy Stevenson announced that his restaurant would close this spring. The proprietor said he is going to slow down a bit to spend time with his grandchildren instead of waking at 4 a.m. six days a week to make fresh sausage, grind beef and slice pork chops. ....
