More than 400 people had fled violence in Cooch Behar district after the May 2 Assembly election results and are staying in makeshift camps in Assam’s border district Dhubri.
Highlights We feel bad to see the situation of West Bengal. India has never seen such a situation previously. The state is virtually sitting on a volcano, WB Jagdeep Dhankhar said.
Dhankar asked the TMC chief if she has heard the cries and screams of the children and women in Nandigram where “lakhs of people are homeless”.
TMC said that the Governor is becoming a “laughing stock” and has brought down his own importance before the people of the state.
New Delhi: West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday (May 15) visited Nandigram in East Midnapore district to meet people allegedly affected by post-poll violence.
Five persons had died on election day in Sitalkuchi.
Dhankhar, whose visit to Cooch Behar was roundly criticised by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was shown black flags by some people at Golokganj as his convoy travelled from Mathabhanga to Sitalkuchi though a posse of policemen put up a human wall to prevent protesters from coming down on the road.
Posters and placards criticising the visit of the governor were also seen at Jorpatki, the scene of firing by central armed police force (CAPF) that killed four persons on April 10 during the fourth phase polling.
A first time voter was also killed at Sitalkuchi while waiting outside a polling booth to exercise his franchise.

BJP urges EC to scan Mamata audio clip on rally with Cooch Behar victims bodies
A BJP delegation on Sunday urged Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Ariz Aftab to take note of a purported audio clip in which Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is heard proposing a rally with the bodies of Cooch Behar firing victims - as such move could lead to more tension in the state amid the ongoing elections. Senior BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta, who led the delegation to the CEO office here, told reporters that he has apprised Aftab of the conversation that apparently took place between Banerjee and the TMC s Sitalkuchi nominee, and pointed out that it could lead to untoward situations in the next three phases of the assembly elections.
