The Fairfield City Council met Tuesday night. After approval of minutes and bills, Joseph Harrelson of 809 George St. addressed the council during public session. Harrelson, who has resided on George St. for 14 years is seeking extra patrols and help from the city to address issues in his neighborhood, which he says is a drug area that needs to be cleaned up. Harrelson claims to have had his property damaged on multiple occasions, including the breaking of the windows on his house and the killing of his dogs. In routine business, the purchase of a police vehicle was pulled from the agenda due to the dealership being unable to take the order for the truck until October. The council discussed the police eligibility list stating that as of last Friday the city had four applicants, however one applicant had withdrawn. COVID-19 vaccinations are currently available for Fairfield residents, and will be distributed on Tuesday, March 16 th. The much-anticipated decision on the fate of the Wayne County Courthouse will not be known for at least some time. The board failed to take any action during the meeting concerning the building, but an Executive Session at the conclusion of the meeting concerned the possible purchase, lease or acquisition of property. No action was taken by the board at the conclusion of the Executive Session. David Harl addressed the board in support of keeping the courthouse, citing its architectural and historic value to the community. Jail Committee Chairman Nathan Jones stated that the board was investigating its options if the Qualified Immunity for Police Bill passes in the Illinois Legislature. The Wayne County Health Department reported nine new positive cases of the coronavirus Thursday and Friday, bringing the total number of lab-confirmed positive cases for the county to 1457. The latest cases are two females in their 20s, a male in his 20s, a male in his 30s, a female in her 50s, a male in his 50s and three males in their 60s. The health department also reports 148 “probable” cases of COVID-19 in Wayne County, with 11 of those currently isolating and being actively contact traced. As of this morning the Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting a total of 1,141,219 cases of the coronavirus statewide and 19,526 deaths. ....
