Early this evening, 20 House Republicans went to the white house to meet with president obama at the president s request. The president had actually requested a meeting with the full republican conference, but the republicans said no to that. They said they wanted to limit it to only 20 of their members. I dont know why, but thats what they did. On the table in that hourandahalf meeting between those 20 republicans and the president was a House Republican offer. They said they would finally relent and agree to increase the federal debt ceiling, but only for six weeks. And they said they would only do that in exchange for negotiations with president obama on larger budget issues and tax reforms. On a point made earlier about the governor of california having to use scant state funds to reopen yosemite made by california members, there is no guarantee that any of this money will be paid back, none, zero. I would say and republican rules paying back and individual states would constitute an earmark which means you would have to waive the rules of the house to do it but would try to pass a bill to extract this out of the park service, and i and the stand why governors are being cautious. Twentysix congressional committees and subcommittees, 800 plus federal judges, 50 states, 50 state legislatures and then you get the thousands of municipalities and counties across the country. Pretty fragmented system. So where am i going with this . The same issues exist around energy that exists around money, and the supply of money. But yet we have in our democratic wisdom figured out a mechanism that enables the Monetary System to work. Within the same governance of this big, sloppy federal democracy. Because we have in the past experienced monetary crises where the system wasnt working, we came up with a solution. And that solution is now 100 years old this year. 1913 Federal Reserve act created an institution, a governance mechanism that works to manage money.
