Villagers block road to Paschimavahini May 4, 2021 Residents take matter into their own hands as people continue to perform rituals in connivance with some priests Srirangapatna: Family members of a COVID victim who had come to Srirangapatna ( Gosai Ghat) from Bengaluru to immerse the ashes were turned away by villagers this morning.  The family was told that the Taluk Administration had banned the ritual of immersing ashes at Paschimavahini in Srirangapatna due to the pandemic. The family members told the villagers that they were not aware of the ban and had come here to immerse ashes as some priests had invited them saying that all arrangements would be made to immerse ashes.

Though immersion of ashes has been banned since last month following the outbreak of COVID-19, there were instances of people violating the protocol. The norms were complied for a few days but gradually there was an increase in the number of people performing the immersion rites. COVID fear With the surge in COVID-19 cases there was a fear among the lvillagers near Ganjam and surrounding areas that there could be a local outbreak and hence created a road blockade.

Immersion of ashes banned at Srirangapatna

Mysore/Mysuru: With the famous Paschimavahini in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district, where Cauvery River flows, witnessing a sudden surge in the number of people visiting the spot for immersion of ashes of the dead of their near and dear ones, Srirangapatna Tahsildar has ordered a ban on immersion of ashes and other associated articles in Cauvery River. As the number of deaths due to COVID-19 is rising by the day, people are thronging the Fort Town of Srirangapatna, where River Cauvery flows, to immerse the ashes of the dead. Following numerous public complaints that people from many parts of the State, especially from Bengaluru and Mysuru are thronging Paschimavahini, Gosai Ghat, Sangama and B.G. Hole, all located in the vicinity of the town, for immersion of ashes and performance of  customary rituals for the dead at Cauvery River during COVID curfew, a team of officials led by Tahsildar M.V. Roopa visited the spots on Wednesday and ordered a complete ban on immersion of a
