79-year-old Claren Lee Hosselton of Clay City died Thursday in a grain bin accident in northern Wayne County. Coroner Carrie Dagg said responders were dispatched to the scene and Hosselton was pronounced dead upon extrication shortly after 2:30 p.m. Thursday. An autopsy has been scheduled to assist in determining the cause of death, and complete results are expected to take several weeks. The Wayne County Coroner, Wayne County Sheriff's Office, North Wayne Ambulance Service, Clay City Fire Protection District and Flora Rescue responded to the scene. Severe weather moved through southern Illinois and the Ohio Valley region late Friday night and early Saturday morning. Wayne County was spared the worst of the weather, however the entire region was under thunderstorm warnings for a time late Friday night and early Saturday morning. The Edwards County Health Office announced 30 new cases of COVID-19 in the past week, bringing its total to 1,173; 21 cases were in unvaccinated individuals. Wabash County announced 24 cases in the past week to reach 2,254 cases; 22 people were in isolation. Hamilton County added seven cases yesterday and sat at 1,384; one person was hospitalized, and 19 were in isolation. White County added three to reach 3,141, and Jefferson County reported nine. The state Department of Public Health announced 6,119 new cases yesterday and 45 additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 1,815,994 cases and 26,459 deaths. The Southern Region had a seven-day positivity rate of 4.7 percent on the 28th, down from five percent on the 27th. Currently the State of Illinois is reporting a total of 1,815,994 cases of COVID-19 in the state, with 30,274 variant cases. Friday's weather forced the postponement of the Fairfield Community High School Homecoming Coronation to tonight, and delayed the start of Friday night's Homecoming football game. The Mules defeated Edwards County in the game 58 to 0. The Homecoming Parade was held Friday afternoon in Fairfield with a good crowd on hand to view the festivities. The winning parade entries were announced, with first place going to the FFA, second place to the Class of 2025 and third place to the Class of 2024. The much-anticipated decision on the fate of the Wayne County Courthouse will not be known for at least some time. The board failed to take any action during the meeting concerning the building, but an Executive Session at the conclusion of the meeting concerned the possible purchase, lease or acquisition of property. No action was taken by the board at the conclusion of the Executive Session. David Harl addressed the board in support of keeping the courthouse, citing its architectural and historic value to the community.
