Draw Realistic Dog Portraits – 7 p.m. July 12 via Zoom. Those ages 18 and older will be guided by Christine Thornton, owner and founder of Hello Art Studio, as they learn to produce a likeness of man’s best friend complete with accurate proportions and shading. Artists can draw a dog using a provided photo or by using their own photo for reference. Students can provide their own materials or they can pick up a free kit at Rodman Public Library. Kits include all suggested supplies – pencil, eraser, drawing paper, kneaded eraser, blending stump and darker drawing pencil. Canton Audubon Society will mark World Migratory Bird Day and Global “Big Day” with a birding hike at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sippo Lake Park Sommer Wildlife Conservation Center, 800 Genoa Ave. NW on the west side of the Perry Township park.
The hike is open of all ages, and binoculars and field guides will be available on loan for the hike.
Throughout the month of May, the Great Lakes region of Ohio hosts millions of migratory birds that are making their way from winter homes in Central America and South America to breeding grounds in Canada. Many will stop off for rest and food at parks such as Sippo Lake, which are on the Mississippi “flyway,” a bird super-highway of sorts. ....

Birdwatchers share enthusiasm, knowledge along Mahoning Valley Trail in Alliance

It didn’t take long for a small but dedicated group of birdwatchers and nature aficionados to have a moment.
Just a few dozen steps onto the Mahoning Valley Trail, the group had already seen or heard song sparrows and cardinals.
It was the first of many ornithological sightings during a 90-minute trek in northern Alliance, an appropriate conclusion to a week of Earth Day activities in and around Stark County.
Armed with binoculars and paper checklists from eBird, the group also had close and not-so-close encounters with cowbirds, woodpeckers and bluejays before the morning ended. ....
