reporter: a passover prayer service at the chabad synagogue near san diego interrupted by a string of gunfire. we were outside in front of our house and heard about six gunshots, pause and yelling and another six or seven gunshots. reporter: authorities say a 19-year-old gunman armed with an assault-style weapon began shooting around 11:30 a.m. striking about four people. he fled the scene but was arrested minutes later. as our officer was exiting the freeway, he clearly saw the suspect in his vehicle. the suspect pulled over, jumped out of his car with his hands up and immediately taken into custody. we have a couple loaded round mags inside the vehicle. reporter: authorities say one woman died and other three victims are in stable condition including a young girl and rabbi leading the worship. witnesses say even after he was shot, he continued to try to calm the congregation and the gunman. heart breaking reaction pouring in, including congressman scott peters,
