hollyfield just talked to spencer s dad. reporter: i did and bob dickinson said this is the most terrifying experience of his life. you can imagine the elation he got last night at 7:52 yes he does know the exact minute that call came in. said hi dad. those were the first words and i was spencer! screaming and he goes dad, be quiet. he goes, i m on a s.a.t. phone and only have a couple moments. call my mom. tell her i m okay. reporter: so he still doesn t know if 21-year-old spencer dickinson is hurt or completely safe but he knows he s alive. spencer s family knew he was headed to mt. everest base camp right before the earthquake. it was terrifying to see the video from when the earthquake hit. he has had sleepless nights of worrying and the waiting was getting more and more difficult. of course he did call spencer s mom right away. she lives in san diego. cameras were rolling when she got the joyful news. that was sheer joy. reporter: the entire city is on high alert for may day with protests beginning as early as 5:30 a.m. police called in for extra patrols to keep order and police. something businesses say is badly needed. dogwood restaurant has been vandalized several times in the past and they re bracing for another less than peaceful protest. i think the smashing of property is pointless. i mean, it doesn t get anybody s message across. reporter: may day is a day of protests all around the world and the long shoremen have been pushing for justice since 1984. we re learning new details about a shooting in sonoma county we first brought you live at 5:00. police confirm a man was shot at police 3:30 this afternoon no deputies were injured in the incident. police are on scene on fifth street. the man was taken to santa rosa memorial hospital. authorities have not released his condition or why an officer decided to fire a weapon. some tense and very scary moments today in san francisco
attention to social injustices affecting the working class. janet oh is live with the story. reporter: and dan the march will begin here at the international long shore union leading the way all the way down to city hall. they expect hundreds of people to turn out on a day historically known for protest, a day to call for change. at the center of world commerce the international long shore and warehouse union said they can make a difference by leading the protest on may day here in oakland. our families are affected by the killings some of our family members and our own locals are victims of police brutality and killings. reporter: the union organizer is referring to walter scott, an african-american man shot by police eight times in south carolina. scott has family member whose are long shore union members. nobody is this is just business. reporter: oakland has been at the front of many protests and this may day, it is no different. here thousands streamed across
getaway car just as it was approaching the dumbarton bridge. officers from both fremont and newark pursued the suspects across the bridge into menlo park at which point the suspect ditched their car in the parking lot of the business park and then started running. officers chased after them and fremont police say that one of the suspects turned around and fired his gun at the officers. fortunately, none of the officers were hit. but that bullet did strike a newark patrol vehicle. the officers did not return fire. and with the assistance of the menlo park police they were able to take two of the suspects into custody and two guns were also recovered. police set up a perimeter near facebook s campus, trying to track down that third suspect. and for much of the evening rush hour, the road was blocked off a, creating quite a backup on 101. then tonight around 8:00 p.m. officers surrounded this home in the 1600 block of purdue avenue. neighbors tell me that it s been vacant for ab
