(vcsuvikings.com)– Senior pitcher Emily Smith picked up her 20th win and eighth shutout of the season with a 5-0 victory over Dakota State Thursday evening. Valley City State picked up its 17th straight victory and moves to 34-5 on the season. Smith worked all seven innings and allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out six in Thursday’s game. The Vikings posted five runs in the first two innings to hold a comfortable lead throughout the game. Joelle Aiello led off with a single and Anne-Elise Gest walked. Marissa Hawkins advanced the runners with a groundout and Makenzee Stone bunted to score Aiello. Autumn Perry‘s two-run double scored Gest and Stone to lead 3-0 after the first inning. The Vikings added a pair of runs in the second inning with Joelle Aiello‘s two-run triple, scoring Andrea Rodriguez and Jessica Husband. ....
MAYVILLE, N.D. (vcsuvikings.com) – Valley City State University clinched its second straight NSAA Softball Conference Championship on Wednesday with a pair of victories at Mayville State. The Vikings defeated the Comets 6-0 and 9-1 to secure the regular season conference title. With four NSAA games remaining, the Vikings are now 21-2 in conference play and lead second-place Bellevue by 4.5 games. It is VCSU’s second straight conference title, the 13 th in program history and the first under coaches Mark Mattson and Barbi Mattson. The Vikings last won the title in 2019. The 2020 conference season was canceled due to COVID-19. “We’re feeling great – everybody’s excited,” head coach Mark Mattson said after the game. “Our goal is always to win the last game of the year, but there are milestones to celebrate along the way. It’s always special to win a conference title.” ....
VALLEY CITY, N.D. (vcsuvikings.com) – The Valley City State softball team expanded its win streak to nine games with a three-game sweep over Waldorf Saturday. The Vikings totaled eight home runs in the three-game series. Four different Vikings homered to take the opening game 8-4. Junior Riley Perryman then homered twice in a 7-4 victory in game two. Finally, Makenzee Stone and Sierra Crocker each homered to combine for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take game three by mercy rule, 9-0. Valley City State improves to 26-5 overall this season and 19-2 in the NSAA. Waldorf drops to 8-25 overall and 6-17 in the conference. ....
The Vikings took the first game 6-0 and finished the second game 10-0 in just five innings. Valley City State now posts a 21-5 overall record and 14-2 conference record. Viterbo drops to 5-27 overall this season and 5-13 in the NSAA. UP NEXT: The Vikings are slated to host Mayville State on Wednesday, April 21. The conference doubleheader will feature a brat feed for a freewill donation that will support the American Cancer Society. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Mayville State is currently three games back of VCSU in the conference standings. VCSU 6, Viterbo 0 Valley City State’s Amber Stewart pitched a complete game shutout of Viterbo, allowing just three hits and striking out four batters. Stewart now holds a 7-2 record this season. ....
VALLEY CITY, N.D. (vcsuvikings.com) – The Valley City State softball team was down to its final out on Sunday, trailing 10-5 during game one of a doubleheader with Bellevue University. That final out never happened. The Vikings put together six straight two-out singles – tying the game at 10-10 – and then Marissa Hawkins hit a walk-off grand slam to complete a stunning comeback. When the celebration ended the Vikings had scored nine runs with two outs, rallying for an improbable 14-10 victory. Bellevue earned a doubleheader split with a 10-1 victory in game two as pitcher Cory Carrillo flirted with a perfect game. ....
