In what must be considered the finest day of amateur play in Clemson women’s golf history, Annabelle Pancake and Savannah Grewal both advanced to the final 32 with first-round match play victories at the 122nd United States Women’s Amateur championship at Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, Washington.After never having an active roster player win a match at the US Women’s Amateur, two Clemson women’s golfers gained victory on the same day. Former Clemson players Ashlan Ramsey and Lauren Stephenson both had won matches previous, but both wins took place before they were seniors in high school.Pancake and Grewal won their matches in strong fashion, as neither trailed at any point in their match. Pancake was 4-up after nine holes and Grewal had a 3-up lead after the initial nine.Pancake won her match, 5 & 4 over Abbey Daniel of Covington, La,, a senior at Mississippi State. Coming off its best finish in two years, the Clemson women’s golf team will finish its fall schedule this weekend at the Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall’s Pete Dye Course in Wilmington, NC. Clemson will be one of 18 teams competing for the championship on the par 72 course that measures 6,150 yards.The national field includes six of the top 20 teams in the nation according to the latest polls conducted by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association, Golfstat and Golfweek. Clemson is ranked 33rd by Golfstat, but is coming off its best performance since the opening tournament of the 2019-20 season, a span of 12 tournaments.The field includes ACC teams Florida State, NC State, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Clemson, S.C. Ivy Shepherd and Melena Barrientos tied for third in the medalist race to lead Clemson to a second-place team finish out of 19 teams at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational. The 54-hole three-day tournament completed on Sunday afternoon at the Finley Golf Course featured 14 Power Five Conference schools, including six from the ACC. Four teams were ranked in the top 25 of the latest Golfweek poll and Clemson defeated three of the four.Thirteenth ranked -Wake Forest won the tournament with an 847 score, 10 shots ahead of the Tigers. Virginia Tech was in third place at 859, two shots behind Clemson’s 857. Alabama was fourth at 862. Kentucky and 11th ranked Duke were tied for fifth at 863. Michigan, ranked a tournament best sixth in the nation entering the event, finished seventh with an 866 score. Clemson finished second to the Demon Deacons among the six ACC teams in the field. Clemson, S.C. Clemson begins play at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational on Friday at the Finley Golf Course on the University of North Carolina campus. It will be Clemson’s third appearance at the tournament in the last four years, but the first since the fall of 2019. The tournament will feature 19 teams, including the North Carolina A and B teams. The field includes six ACC teams, four SEC teams and four from the Big Ten. Michigan is the highest ranked team in the field with a #8 ranking according to Golfweek and ninth by Golfstat. Alabama (12), Wake Forest (13) and Duke (14) give the field four of the top 15 teams in the nation according to Golfweek. There are eight top 35 teams in the field. All 19 teams will play 18 holes a day, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of this week. Clemson players start between 9:30 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. off the 10th tee on Friday.
