PHOTO BY DAVID REID - A total of 51,062 Tobagonians are eligible to vote at some 61 polling stations in today’s Tobago House of Assembly (THA) election. Polling stations open from 6 am to 6pm. The election is being contested by two major political parties, the People’s National Movement (PNM) and the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP). Both parties are contesting all 12 electoral districts. Class Action Reform Movement (CARM) political leader Ricardo Phillip and Unity of the People leader Nickocy Phillips are vying for the Buccoo/Mt Pleasant seat while independent candidate Anthony Hector is contesting the Black Rock/Whim/Spring Garden electoral district. ....

PHOTO BY JEFF MAYERS - After weeks of hectic campaigning, tomorrow’s eagerly anticipated Tobago House of Assembly (THA) election will again be a fight between the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) and the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP). This is the view of political analyst Dr Bishnu Ragoonath, senior lecturer, Department of Political Science, UWI, St Augustine. When the House was dissolved on November 17, 2020, the PNM controlled ten of the 12 seats in the THA. The party has led the THA for the past two decades. ....
THA election candidate suffers stroke TAKEN ILL: THA election independent candidate Anthony Hector who suffered a stroke over the weekend. - WITH just over two weeks to go before the January 25 Tobago House of Assembly (THA) election, independent candidate for Black Rock/Whim/Spring Garden Anthony Hector has reportedly suffered a stroke. A source said Hector, 58, was taken to the Scarborough General Hospital on Saturday where he remains warded and is said to be resting comfortably. The source could not say if Hector will bow out of the election race or return to the campaign. On January 4, Hector filed his nomination papers along with several other candidates at Montessori Drive, Glen Road. He told reporters he felt nervous during the exercise as it was first time entering electoral politics. On that occasion, Hector said his main priority, if elected, will be to establish a community council for the electoral district. ....

Speaking to reporters on Monday after filing his nomination papers at $2 Montessori Drive, Glen Road, an upbeat Morris said he is hoping to capitalise on the area’s cultural assets to boost its tourism. He said the natural assets in Les Coteaux, Courland and Black Rock can contribute significantly to developing a strong tourism product in the electoral district. ....
