Micron Center for Materials Research wins Excellence in Sustainability award

The Micron Center for Materials Research building was recognized for Excellence in Sustainability in the 2021 Building Excellence Awards presented by the City of Boise.

Each year the city partners with Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of Idaho to recognize organizations, businesses and individuals that built a new building or completed a building remodel that made Boise safer, more accessible to citizens, featured a unique design or was environmentally sustainable.
In her remarks announcing Boise State’s award, Julie Romig, a plans examiner for the city, called the structure “an innovative example of design and sustainability, emphasizing the university’s goal to become a leader in academics, research and civic engagement.” ....

Boise State commencement speaker Olivia Thomas, Albertsons Library. Thomas shared advice for students just beginning their college careers at Boise State. “There’s so much opportunity here. I did a lot, but think even I didn’t realize the possibilities. We’re large enough that you can find a group, a research project that interests you. But we’re small enough that it’s all accessible.” John Kelly photo.
From the time she was a young student at the Idaho Virtual Academy, Olivia Thomas knew she wanted to invent video games – in particular, games with an educational focus. She read her first book on coding when she was 10. Her interest in technology only grew through high school. In her senior year at the academy, she searched the country for video game design programs. It happened that Boise State’s Games, Interactive Media and Mobile program (GIMM) had welcomed its first class the year before. ....

By the time an average student graduates from public school in the United States, they have spent 105,120 hours of their life in a classroom. A lot can happen in 105,120 hours: a child can discover their passion, a teenager can fall in love, or someone of any age can be injured or start to show signs of chronic illness.
School nurses are known for treating playground injuries, but they can play an essential role in identifying early signs of chronic illnesses such as asthma or diabetes, as well as mental and behavioral concerns such as depression, anxiety, and hyperactivity disorders. Even so, up to 60% of American schools aren’t able to employ a full-time, formally-trained nurse on campus, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. ....
