A helping hand in rural Idaho: Boise State and community partners open a school-based clinic

A helping hand in rural Idaho: Boise State and community partners open a school-based clinic March 2, 2021 By Angela Fairbanks (Fairbanks is a content writer in the School of Nursing) By the time an average student graduates from public school in the United States, they have spent 105,120 hours of their life in a classroom. A lot can happen in 105,120 hours: a child can discover their passion, a teenager can fall in love, or someone of any age can be injured or start to show signs of chronic illness. School nurses are known for treating playground injuries, but they can play an essential role in identifying early signs of chronic illnesses such as asthma or diabetes, as well as mental and behavioral concerns such as depression, anxiety, and hyperactivity disorders. Even so, up to 60% of American schools aren’t able to employ a full-time, formally-trained nurse on campus, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Bronco Corps offers help for small businesses and nonprofits, puts student skills and talents to work

Boise State News January 21, 2021 Downtown Boise, Allison Corona photo Boise State’s College of Business and Economics (COBE) is actively helping the Idaho business community solve challenges and disruptions due to COVID. Last fall, the college launched Bronco Corps, a program that provides Idaho small businesses and nonprofit organizations with student interns at no cost, and helps students gain valuable work experience. Following a successful pilot phase, a generous donor recently made it possible for the program to continue through 2021. Organizations that took part in Bronco Corps last year include the Gardner Company, Boise Bicycle Project, American Red Cross, Girl Scouts of Silver Sage, Girls on the Run, and Boise Cakery, to name a few. Based on an end-of-year survey, 67 percent of the companies will offer additional opportunities to interns. Each of the participating companies reported that the main goals of the internships were met.
