Patients should be allowed to request same sex doctor for intimate care, government says

Patients in England can request a doctor of the same sex for intimate care, where reasonably possible, under proposed changes to the NHS constitution.1

The constitution, which was launched in January 2009, sets out the principles and values of the NHS in England for patients and staff. The Health Act 2009 states that the constitution must be updated every 10 years. It was last updated in 2015 and the government says that the proposed changes will make the privacy, dignity, and safety of all patients central to NHS principles and values.

It has proposed adding a pledge to the consultation which states that patients can “request intimate care be provided, where reasonably possible, by someone of the same biological sex.”

Contaminated blood scandal: compensation plans are at risk, campaigners warn

A campaign group representing people affected by the UK infected blood scandal is calling on its members to lobby their MPs and working peers to save the compensation scheme.

Former judge Brian Langstaff published an interim report a year ago calling for a compensation scheme to be set up urgently for people affected by government failings that allowed thousands to be given blood and blood products infected with HIV and hepatitis C in the 1970s and 1980s. The work of the scheme should begin in 2023, he said.1

Last December, when the Victims and Prisoners Bill introduced to deal with victims of crime and prisoner release was going through the House of Commons, a Labour led amendment requiring the government to set up an independent body to administer infected blood compensation was passed by 246 votes to 242.
