Physician associates: GMC calls for views on regulation

The General Medical Council has launched a consultation on how it will regulate physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs).1

The regulator must be ready to regulate PAs and AAs by the end of 2024, after legislation was passed by the UK and Scottish parliaments legally requiring it to do so. Ahead of this, the GMC needs to consult on the rules, standards, and guidance that provide the detail for how regulation will be delivered.

The consultation covers PAs’ and AAs’ education and training, registration, fees, and how concerns about them will be dealt with. It is not seeking views on whether the GMC is the appropriate regulator of PAs and AAs, or on their … ....

Health leaders urge the government to restore funding for NHS staff wellbeing hubs

Healthcare organisations have called on the government to restore funding for evidence based mental health and wellbeing services for NHS and social care staff.

A group of 17 organisations including medical royal colleges and the BMA have written to Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Victoria Atkins asking her to urgently restore ringfenced investment in services as part of the NHS long term workforce plan.

BMA chair: Junior doctors understandably think my generation has not protected the profession

Junior doctors believe that their senior colleagues have not done enough to safeguard the future of the profession, says the BMA’s council chair, Philip Banfield.

In an interview with The BMJ Banfield reflected on how senior doctors felt about continuing to support the industrial action undertaken by their junior colleagues as part of a dispute over pay.

“The longer it goes on, I’m sure the more tired consultants will become,” he said. “But the junior doctors would say, and I’ve got some sympathy with this, that the reason we’re in the state we’re in is because my generation has not protested enough, has not protected the profession, and has let the service deteriorate.”
