GMC apologises for regulatory action against doctors convicted under now repealed homophobic laws

The UK General Medical Council has issued a formal apology for taking regulatory action in historical cases against doctors who had criminal convictions under homophobic laws that have since been repealed. The GMC’s chair, Carrie MacEwen, said the regulator was “truly sorry” for compounding the harm done to doctors who had convictions that would today be considered unjust.1

From 1899 to 1994 the GMC considered cases against at least 40 male doctors for engaging, or attempting to engage, in consensual sexual activity and intimacy with other men. Of those, at least eight were struck off the medical register. The last confirmed … ....

GMC says sorry to LGBTQ+ doctors, but wider persecution continues in medicine

Regulatory action against doctors that was based on now repealed homophobic laws casts a long shadow, say campaigners. They welcome a formal apology issued by the medical regulator this week but they say that LGBTQ+ doctors still face prejudice in the workplace, writes Abi Rimmer

An apology from the General Medical Council (GMC) for past regulatory action, taken against doctors who were convicted under now repealed homophobic laws, represents progress and is the result of concerted efforts by the regulator’s staff. But the historical persecution of LGBTQ+ doctors still looms large and it continues today, say campaigners.

Carrie MacEwen, GMC chair, said this week (22 February) that the medical regulator was “truly sorry” for taking regulatory action against at least 40 male doctors who, in historical cases, had criminal convictions under homophobic laws (box 1). At least eight of them were struck off the medical register.

Martha's rule to be rolled out in English hospitals from April

Martha’s rule will be rolled out across hospitals in England from April, enabling patients and families to seek an urgent review if the patient’s condition deteriorates, the NHS England chief executive has announced.

Amanda Pritchard said the programme had the potential to save many lives in the future and thanked the family of Martha Mills for their important campaigning.

Martha was 13 years old when she died from sepsis in 2021.1 Her parents, Merope Mills and Paul Laity, said that they were not listened to when they expressed concern about Martha’s deterioration and called for changes to make it easier to ask for a second opinion.

Extensive campaigning by Mills and Laity, supported by the cross party think tank Demos, has seen widespread support for a single system that allows patients of any age or their families to trigger an urgent clinical review from a different team in the hospital if the patient’s condition is rapidly worsening and they believe the ....

Fund "broken" mental health services based on current need, demands BMA

Funding for mental health services should be based on current need rather than historic data, the BMA has said in a report on the experiences of staff. Doctors reported that they were struggling to deliver the care that patients needed, blaming inadequate funding, workforce shortages, and unsuitable infrastructure.1

Consultant psychiatrist and BMA mental health lead Andrew Molodynski said, “The demand for mental health services has changed dramatically, but funding has not kept pace. Mental healthcare funding must be based on what people need today instead of on what we spent yesterday, which was inadequate even then.” … ....

NHS rainbow badge scheme pares back activity after losing funding

A scheme aimed at fostering inclusivity for LGBTQ+ people in NHS secondary care settings has lost its government funding.

The NHS rainbow badge programme was launched in 2018 at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital by consultant paediatrician Michael Farquhar and communications manager Jessica Law.1

As the programme expanded across England it was taken on by a partnership of the Association of LGBTQ+Doctors and Dentists (GLADD), LGBT+ Consortium, the LGBT Foundation, Stonewall, and Switchboard in 2021.

The partnership ran the rainbow badge programme as an accreditation scheme for trusts, supporting them to review their policies and look at how they were meeting the needs of LGBTQ+ patients and staff. Trusts that got accreditation were able to … ....
