MANILA - The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday tallied 7,689 new SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) infections, the fifth straight day below the 10,000-mark. The latest case bulletin showed a total of 136,436 are undergoing treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), down from the 291,618 peak recorded on January 21. Of the active cases, 7,069 are currently asymptomatic, 124,476 are mild, 3,106 are moderate, 1,468 are severe, and only 317 are critical. The DOH also reported 22,539 new recoveries, pushing the number of those who recuperated from the disease to 3,410,821, or 94.7 percent of the overall 3,601,471 count since the pandemic began in March 2020. During a televised public briefing, Health Undersecretary and treatment czar Leopoldo Vega said the OHC has logged 98 to 112 calls only per day from the first to the third week of December 2021. "Kakaiba talaga ito dahil iyong September calls natin, on last wave, ay umabot na kami sa mga 780 to mga 800 calls (This is really strange because our September calls, on last wave [of cases], we reached 780 to 800 calls)," he added. MANILA - The release of Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine which especially targets the Omicron variant may be "too late" for countries with an ongoing surge of cases, World Health Organization (WHO) country representative Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe said on Wednesday. This, after Pfizer Inc. Chief Executive Albert Bourla announced on Monday their redesigned Omicron-targeted Covid-19 jab may be ready for launching in March. "If you are talking about managing the spread of the [Omicron] variant in countries that are already seeing a surge, it may be too late," Abeyasinghe said during a televised public briefing.
