won the week two. all in with chris hayes starts now. l in with chris hayes starts now. good evening from new york. i m chris. hayes i want to get ahead of the story. it appears this long week may be coming to a close and more ways than one. if grading on a curve, strong curve, would be speaker of the house kevin mccarthy had his best day yet today. i should say he still lost two more rounds of votes. he did manage to win over most of his detractors, including some previous hard-liners. and, for the first time, he actually won more votes in the democratic challenger, hakeem jeffries. so, clap. negotiations are still underway. they are adjourned right now when they reconvene just two short hours from now, mccarthy may finally become speaker of the house. they seem confident that is the case. we will see. but based on everything we ve seen, it s obvious, even if mccarthy does clinched the gavel, it will be a victory. this will leave him the weakest speaker in modern ....

of this vote. and it appears, though obviously it is not done yet. that kevin mccarthy may in fact have the votes. steve, can you give us a bit of the history lesson here? compare this to any other time in modern history? any other time in modern history there is none, because the last time the speaker s vote went past one ballots was 1823. but, we will come back to this board. but to put you in some s perspective what the history of this is. you re looking at here, this is every speakers race in history gone past one ballot. we ll put this past today when there were only 11 ballots. so this is the 15th ballots. right here in history is where the speakers race ranks. is the 15th longest and you can see, there for longer than this were all pre civil war. this is gonna finish well shy of a record of 133. but if it does indeed finish here. 15 ballots will be the fifth longest in american history. and we haven t seen this go past the first ballot since back in 1923. the ....

speaker of the house, kevin mccarthy has finally been sworn in after waiting on the historic 15th ballot. it is not my solemn responsibility to hand over the peoples gavel. look to a son of bakersfield, a former small business owner, a proud product of a firefighters household. but the gentleman from the great state of california and the next speaker of the 118 congress, kevin mccarthy. [applause] that was easy, you write? i never thought we d get up here. my father always told me, it s not how you start it s how you finish and now we need to finish strong for the american people. to leader jeffries, there will be times we agree, and many tanks we will defer. i promise our debates will be passionate, but they will never be personal. but that s my commitment to you. after taking his own oath of office says the speakers were in the members of the 118th congress and despite making a broad range of concessions, speaker mccarthy only won his office with 216 votes. too ....
