Westford Academy mascot focus of conversation about race, perception

The current Grey Ghost image is the work of a student who won a design contest.  While some see a phantom, Antonelli said the color gray and the hood evoke other connotations, including of the Civil War, or hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. Michele Shannon, executive vice president of client services for New York Leadership Academy, and a parent of students in the district, wanted to volunteer in the schools. Shannon who was a finalist for the school superintendent position volunteered to facilitate discussions with students about the mascot. Shannon conferred with students in a voluntary focus group; Murphy said Shannon is set to host focus groups next week for BIPOC students Black, indigenous and people of color.

Student DifferenceMakers honored for inventions

 E-Mail LOWELL, Mass. - A product that detects and helps seal leaks in ill-fitting face masks to protect against COVID-19 and other environmental hazards recently won top honors in UMass Lowell s annual student entrepreneurship pitch competition. Called TrueFIT, the invention was named the Rist Campuswide DifferenceMaker in UMass Lowell s 2021 DifferenceMaker $50,000 Idea Challenge, a contest that caps a year-long program that teaches students in all majors skills they can use to launch their own businesses and nonprofits. TrueFIT was one of 10 innovations showcased before expert judges during the competition s final round, which was held online and viewed by more than 100 people. Fifty teams entered the challenge, now in its ninth year.

DAR chapter names Good Citizen winners Wicked Local The Colonel John Robinson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Westford met recently on Zoom to honor the Good Citizen Award winners from area high schools. Each student wrote an essay on the subject of “Our American Heritage and our Responsibility for Preserving it.” The Good Citizen program is nationally recognized, open to all high school seniors, and is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.  The application of the chapter’s winner is sent to State DAR for further judging.  The Good Citizen winners honored were chapter winner Grace Audette, of Ayer High School; Anne Segaloff, of the Bromfield School; Daisy Rivas, of Greater Lowell Technical High School; Grace Greenough, of Littleton High School; Isabella Raposo, of Nashoba Valley Technical High School; and Robyn Bryce, of Westford Academy.
