It is now more than 20 years since I moved to Sandhill Farm House, near Petersfield in Hampshire. I was immediately attracted to the one-acre property, divided into two halves, as it had the potential of being turned into several different spaces.
Sandhill is my fourth real garden. Having been a tenant of a National Trust property – Stoneacre in Kent – for 11 years, I wanted a change and the freedom to create a new, smaller garden that would need less maintenance. The thin, sandy soil would be easier to work than heavy Kent clay and I imagined that the garden could be managed in about two days per week.

SIR – Jane Moth (Letters, January 23) is absolutely right about the grief and gloom in the BBC news coverage of Covid. I stopped watching the six o’clock news 10 days ago.
I keep abreast of the news and am aware of the seriousness of the situation, but it has been a release not watching daily close-ups of dying patients and grieving relatives. I feel able to face daily difficulties in better heart, but can still sympathise with those less fortunate.
The MBIE Migration Data Explorer has the information (https://mbienz.shinyapps.io/migration data explorer/ ) back to 2010, albeit needs a bit of knowledge to use it. Specifically, arrival and departure data from Customs states Resident Visa for all residence class visas other than Australians (who are captured and listed separately), but for INZ application data, Permanent Resident Visa (PRV) applications are reported separately from other residence class visas as Returning Residence Visa in the application categories (this relates to the visa framework in the Immigration Act). This category also includes Variation of Travel Conditions applications, so requires some drilling to get PRV numbers.

For most people, infection with SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes COVID-19 – leads to mild, short-term symptoms, acute respiratory illness, or possibly no symptoms at all. But some people have long-lasting symptoms after their infection – this has been dubbed “long COVID”.
Scientists are still researching long COVID. It’s not well understood, though our knowledge about it is growing. Here I take a look at what we’ve learned about it so far – who is at risk, how common it is and what its effects are.
In defining who is at risk from long COVID and the mechanisms involved, we may reveal suitable treatments to be tried – or whether steps taken early in the course of the illness might ameliorate it.
