FREMONT - A Fremont man faces extortion charges after police say he attempted to withhold evidence if he was not given $100,000.
Jose Rodriguez, 41, told Derek Wensinger, a detective sergeant with Fremont Police, he had evidence related to a May 8 death, but said he would destroy the video footage if police attempted to execute a search warrant for the evidence. H said he wanted to be paid to turn over the evidence, according to a Fremont Police report.
Police were investigating the May 8 death of Rodney O. Johnson, and said they would pay $100 for the evidence.
On May 11, Rodriguez told police he reviewed his home security footage and believed the details of the video would be valuable in the death investigation of Johnson, and then asked Wensinger for $100,000 after the detective offered $100.
COLLISS PARRETT begs to disagree with political columnist Michael Moore when it comes to drugs…
I STRONGLY disagree with Michael Moore’s comments (“Finally, injecting some sense into drug policy”, CN April 29).
On the one hand, he says: “The ACT is leading the nation with drug and alcohol policies.”
A little further on, he writes that there is significant risk of further delay saying, as the minister pointed out a month ago, “additional scoping will be required before a decision is made on whether to proceed on a drug-consumption room in the ACT including community consultation, an assessment of the existing legislative framework and further development of an appropriate model”.

CHEBOYGAN The Cheboygan City Council at its Feb. 9 meeting scheduled two public hearings for the potential vacation of an alleyway and a portion of Benton Street for its March 9 meeting. We re going to set two public hearings, one for an alley, one for a street, said Cheboygan City Manager Tom Eustice. On property owned by Blaine and Allen LaVigne, which was rezoned to light industrial.
The LaVignes have the plan to construct individual storage units on the property. The property owners are requesting an abandonment of the street right of way on Benton Street north of State Street and west of Ball Street that has never been developed, but is still a part of Benton Street.
