FREMONT - A Fremont man faces extortion charges after police say he attempted to withhold evidence if he was not given $100,000.
Jose Rodriguez, 41, told Derek Wensinger, a detective sergeant with Fremont Police, he had evidence related to a May 8 death, but said he would destroy the video footage if police attempted to execute a search warrant for the evidence. H said he wanted to be paid to turn over the evidence, according to a Fremont Police report.
Police were investigating the May 8 death of Rodney O. Johnson, and said they would pay $100 for the evidence.
On May 11, Rodriguez told police he reviewed his home security footage and believed the details of the video would be valuable in the death investigation of Johnson, and then asked Wensinger for $100,000 after the detective offered $100.
