The COVID-19 pandemic presented a host of challenges for the student organizers of the annual Pirates Vs. Cancer fundraiser this year, but they remained undaunted and still managed to raise more than $13,000 for local pediatric cancer patients.
On Friday afternoon, the popular event during which people have their heads shaved or hair cut for charity returned to ECU s Health Sciences Campus Student Center, but with some noticeable differences.
A pediatric orthopedic surgeon has a unique job aimed at getting children back to their normal life. For Dr. Robert Palmer, pediatric orthopedic surgeon for Vidant Orthopedics-Greenville, helping a child return to is or her routine means creating a relationship that allows patients and families to partner in their recovery.
âBeing a pediatric orthopedic surgeon is unique because we are responsible for treating the whole child,â Palmer said. âWe see so many unique cases, from limb deficiencies to physical deformities and traumatic injuries like broken bones. This means the relationship I build with my patients and their families is not centered around a single surgical event, but rather the unique treatment and healing process catered to help that child get back to life.â
A holiday pop-up that supports the James and Connie Maynard Childrenâs Hospital at Vidant Medical Center will begin offering egg nog in the Uptown District today.
The Nog pop-up wonât have a free-standing store this year because of the coronavirus pandemic but will team up with two established businesses to offer its fund-raising products.
Nog Express @ Smashed Waffles, 718 Dickinson Ave., will offer âNiceâ (non-alcoholic) Nog Quarts online for pickup or delivery with the option to make them âNaughtyâ with recipe cards for home modification. Single-cup orders also will be available for walk-in customers during regular business hours.
The Nog Bar @ Still Life, 511 Cotanche St., will feature Nog beverages in the open-air Sky Bar on Wednesday through Sunday nights starting at 5 p.m. today, according to the Uptown Greenville development partnership.
