Photo submitted by Daniel Dieker After a tense few days, Izzy Dieker can once again ride a USD 251 North Lyon County school bus to and from North Lyon County Junior High. The eighth-grader recently gained permission to use the bus after she was told she couldn t ride following an incident Jan. 26 and subsequent conversations between the family and the district. Dieker s parents, Daniel Dieker and Tasha Cooper, spoke with KVOE News on Saturday after saying they had seen a video of the incident in question. They say the incident started in the back of the bus and culminated with Izzy Dieker saying she was a lesbian as part of a loud and occasionally vulgar conversation. KU announces Truman Scholarship nominees

LAWRENCE Four outstanding juniors will be the University of Kansas nominees for Harry S. Truman Scholarships. The students are competing for the prestigious national awards, which provide up to $30,000 for graduate study. The awards are given to college juniors for leadership in public service. They are highly competitive, with only about 60 Truman Scholars named nationwide each year.   This year’s KU nominees:  Radhia Abdirahman, majoring in global & international studies and human biology (applied behavioral sciences)  
 Rachel Hall, majoring in global & international studies and political science and minoring in intelligence and national security studies 
 Gustavo Murillo-Espinoza, majoring in molecular, cellular & developmental biology and a minor in Latino/a studies

Hilary Dow Ward’s mornings started earlier than most during her four years at Emporia High School. Ward, driven by her passion for music and choir, commuted for more than an hour one way just to attend school. It was worth it, she says, for the support and education she received from longtime choir director Don Grant. “I drove over 30,000 miles for over four years to be in his choir at Emporia High School,” Ward said. “And every day when I got there, he always said, ‘Thank you for being here.’ And at the time, I don’t think it meant the very much, but it was significant because it took me more than an hour to get to school and more than an hour to get home every day, but I did it because it was such a superior opportunity to what I would have had otherwise.”
