Ransomware is a “scourge” that has to be fought by governments around the world, according to experts who spoke at the annual RSA Conference this week.
“This is a threat that has moved from economic nuisance eight years ago to national security and public health and safety threat today,” Michael Daniel, CEO of the Cyber Threat Alliance and a former White House cybersecurity co-ordinator, told a panel.
“Once a threat has moved into that category we need government to bring its resources to the table, and private sector and not-for-profit sector to engage as well. And it’s not just the U.S. government. This is an international problem.”

The USD 251 North Lyon County Board of Education approved a revised crisis plan for the district during its recent meeting Wednesday evening.
According to Superintendent Bob Blair the revisions will not see any major changes to the plan. He says the revisions simply make it more detailed and user friendly.

Blair says constant improvement in crisis planning was a norm for him at his previous district and he plans to continue the regular update efforts with 251 s plan in the years to come.
According to a Canadian security expert, the ransomware attack on a major U.S. gasoline pipeline should put complacent Canadian citizens and political leaders on high alert to the threat of online attacks against critical infrastructure.
“My sense is we are seriously vulnerable, and this [attack] is a major canary in the coal mine,” Christian Leuprecht, a Queen’s University professor and senior fellow in security and defence at the Macdonald Laurier Institute, said in an interview days after the ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline Co.
When the company learned of the attack on May 7, it shut down all pipeline operations and some IT systems to contain the threat. Reporting suggests it’s slowly opening the lines and hopes to be fully operational by the end of this week. However, the website hosting Colonial’s media statements was offline Tuesday morning after being available late Monday.
