The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue. At least 53 people are still missing. A navy warship returned to the city s harbour on Wednesday with some of the 186 survivors rescued so far. Thirty-five people have also been rescued from another of the three other barges stranded due to cyclone Tauktae.

India races to rescue hundreds missing after two cargo ships caught up in deadly cyclone Akshita Jain © Provided by The Independent The Indian navy is rushing to rescue crew members from a sunken barge and another vessel that was adrift near the Mumbai coastline on Tuesday after a powerful cyclone slammed into India’s west coast. The navy said it has so far rescued 177 of the total 273 personnel on board barge P305 which sank on Monday as Cyclone Tauktae passed the coast of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra state. The first batch of rescued people was brought to Mumbai on Tuesday and sent for medical attention.
