WCSD school board trustees Andrew Caudill, Kurt Thigpen to resign

This story has been updated with additional details.  Two of the seven members on the Washoe County School Board Trustees will resign, the school district confirmed Monday evening.  Those members are Andrew Caudill and Kurt Thigpen.  Caudill’s resignation is effective on or before June 25 and Thigpen’s resignation will be effective after a replacement for his vacancy has been filled by the current board. Caudill, who was elected in 2018, has taken a job out of state. Thigpen, who just started his four year term this year, is resigning because of an undisclosed medical issue.  “On the advice of my doctors, it is with a heavy heart and great sorrow that I have decided to resign from the Board of Trustees,” Thigpen said in a statement released by the district.

Watch live: WCSD board to discuss school plans for 2021-22

8 p.m. update The Washoe County School Board did not make any changes to its mask policy, which now allows those under 10 to go without a mask and mandates it for everyone else, including students and staff who are fully vaccinated. It was a brief discussion and the board discussed possibly allowing staff to wear a face shield if vaccinated, but there were concerns that shields are not as effective and that there is no way to know who is vaccinated.  A few board members made comments that to change things now wasn t a good idea after the feedback from the quick decision by the Superintendent Kristen McNeill last week to remove the mask mandate for the district s youngest students.

Confusion and frustration as WCSD drops masks for those 9 and younger

This is a breaking news story and will be updated. A Washoe County School District decision late Sunday to end a mask mandate for children 9 and under came as a surprise to many, including thousands of district teachers and area pediatricians. In a call and email to parents Sunday night after 8 p.m., the district said it would no longer require masks for the district s youngest students who would typically fall in grades fourth and below.  In its statement Sunday night, the district said the decision that students 9 and younger did not have to wear masks inside or outside came from the Nevada Department of Education.
