School board makes zoning changes during first in-person meeting in a month

School board makes zoning changes during first in-person meeting in a month 0share After holding their last two meetings virtually, the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees met in person for their May 11 meeting, which was held in the conference room at the district’s administration building at 425 E. Ninth St. People seeking to provide public comment began gathering outside of the administration building before the meeting began. The conference room is smaller than the school theaters and gyms the board has held its meetings in over the last year. Board members heard several hours of vitriolic public comment in very much the same vein as has been expressed throughout the pandemic people railing on teaching equity and diversity, accusing the school district of “turning out social justice warriors” and complaining that mask mandates are tantamount to child abuse. One woman demanded the school board purposefully and publicly defy Gov. Steve Sisolak’s mask mandate

Watch live: WCSD board returns to in-person meetings

View Comments The Washoe County School Board is meeting in person again today, starting at 2 p.m., after moving its last two meetings to virtual because of what the district called a confrontational crowd. Just minutes before the start of the meeting, a crowd was already gathering at the district and there were police officers outside of the building.  The district was anticipating a crowd and said it may keep people outside and rotate people in if they are there to make public comment.  The agenda for Tuesday s meeting includes a report on the 2021 Legislative session and what may impact the school district. The district has repeatedly talked about the financial hit they are bracing for amid budget cuts.

School district sues Washoe County over $19 5M Incline settlement

The Washoe County School District has filed a lawsuit in Second Judicial District Court against Washoe County, the five elected county commissioners and Tammy Davis, the Washoe County treasurer. The suit was filed Thursday over the $19.5 million the county will begin collecting in July from the school district after a 17-year legal battle found that the county had overtaxed residents in Incline Village and Crystal Bay. The total now owed to Incline property owners is $56 million. Of that, the county owes over $23 million. The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, Incline Village General Improvement District and the State of Nevada combined are being held responsible for $13 million.

The WCSD school board cancels in person meeting and goes virtual

The Washoe County School Board s meeting today is being livestreamed and can be watched at RGJ.com. The board moved the meeting from in-person citing that there were concerns about people during public comment who did not wear a mask and who were confrontational at its last meeting on March 30. Public comment can only be submitted via email and will not be read aloud. A few people submitted public comment ahead of today s meeting upset that the board was canceling the in person chance for people to voice their concerns. It is appalling that you would shut down the board meetings and not take in person public comment from the citizens of Washoe County, wrote Carolyn Sullivan. We pay taxes to keep the school district afloat, and our children and grandchildren are being educated in this system.
