another robbery in central park. this morning, police are looking for a man accused in the violent attack. cbs 2ilana gold joins us live from the park with an update. ilana? >> andrea and diane, police say the victim is a 53-year-old man. he was walking here on the upper west side. when the suspect asked him for money. and then he strangled him and stole everything he had. >> the nypd just released a sketch of this suspect. they say he is responsible for a violent robbery in central park, in the rammable section by 72nd street and west drive. it happened at 10:00 thursday night. >> it is terrible. and it is frightening. >> police say he approached a 53-year-old man walking by. he said he was hungry and needed money. but when the man told him no and walked away, the suspect followed, and then put him in a choke hold until he passed out. the victim woke up 30 minutes later and his wallet and backpack filled with cash, jewelry and keys were gone. >> it is very concerning. this is our park. we should be free to walk here any time. >> the incident just comes just weeks after we talked to the nypd commissioner bill bratton about quality of life issues and pan lindling. >> there was a gentleman sitting on the sidewalk with the scene, i'm hungry, give me the law. protected by the constitution. a protection of free speech. but chasing you down the street, grabbing at you or getting in your face, or a squeegee at an intersection for example coming up an intimidating you to let you wash the window, that's not protected. 20 robberies in central park this year. that is double the number for the same time frame last year. and women and men have been victimized all times of the day and night. just last week in the great hill area, a 26-year-old woman got punched in the face and robbed for only $1.70. what do you think about these numbers? >> well, it would be helpful if we had more police in the park. >> police have stepped up patrols and they are warning everyone in central park to be alert. especially since the suspect linked to thursday's crime hasn't been caught. >> police say the man who got attacked out here went to the hospital the following day. he was checked out and we are told he is doing okay. we are live in central park this morning, ilana gold, cbs 2 news. bus and train service is back in brooklyn after a water main break near the barclay center. and crews were working to repair the busy section of flatbush avenue last night. the 2 and 3 subway lines were shut down and several buss had to be rerouted. no word what caused the break. federal investigators are looking at a drone incident from orlando to jfk, the drone was spotted around 4:00 yesterday afternoon as the plane approached the runway. it was 1700 feet above the ground when the drone appeared. >> a mile back, there was a drone flying just under the southwest side of the airport here. >> what altitude? >> 100 feet below, just off the right wing. >> the jet with 159 people on board, landed safely. and we have some new information this morning, on malaysia airlines flight 370. a six foot section of an airplane wing that could be from that missing plane is now in paris. the part which is called the flapper arm is discovered wednesday off the coast of madagascar on a french island of reunion. aviation experts test it at an aeronautical lab linked to the paris defense ministry and try to determine whether the wreckage is part of the missing plane. beijing in 2014. a rare call in mahmoud abbas after an attack in the west bank. an 18-month-old palestinian was burned to death when attackers set fire to his home. his parents and older brother were also critically burned. jewish extremists are expected. israel vows to find and punish the around 5:00 thursday morning, he climbed a fire escape on 10th street in west village and entered the apartment through an open window and the woman spoke to us off camera saying it is not where she is afraid but it is disappointing that an element out there could do this to someone. it happened across the street from the sixth street station house. and two drivers lost their temper on an expressway and their road rage caught on camera. tracy carasco has the exclusive video. >> this guy is trying to challenge this guy to a fight. >> drivers behaving bad limit caught on camera. as the man in the red car cuts off the man in this white suv. a game of back and forth. >> this is one of the craziest things i have ever seen. >> next it appears the driver in the red car intentionally comes to a complete stop on the busy long island expressway. eastbound. past the springfield boulevard exit in queens. the white suv rams into the red car. and pushing it out of the way before taking off. >> i took my phone out, what is going to happen? i got nervous. anthony was on his way home to long island from work in manhattan on wednesday afternoon when he took the video. it is dangerous. it is already dangerous enough to drive and people out there that are like this. it is scary. >> the nypd tells us no complaint was filed in this incident. but drivers like damiano are seeing road rage incidents more frequently. >> it seems people are more stressed than ever. >> aaa says with more drivers on the road, longer commutes, construction, traffic, distracted driving, even being cut off while having a bad day, all of that can add up to a case of road rage. >> we live in a very crowded congested city. and driving in those kind of conditions can lead to incidents happening a lot. >> robert sinclair with aaa recommends listening to music. planning in advance. avoid overusing the horn. and staying calm. if you witness a road rage incident like this one, it is best to call 911. haskel invitational at monmouth park tomorrow. where he is the overwhelming favorite. and the haskel will be american pharoah's first start since he became the first triple crown winner in 37 years. 10,000 people were expected to show up earlier this morning to catch a glimpse of the colt in the clubhouse. it opened its doors to the public free of age from 7:00 to 8:00 this morning. american in orange county, and three upstate counties. and patients with certain medical conditions will be allowed to obtain nonsmokable versions of marijuana. here is an alert for parents of young athletes. the hospital for special surgery is offering free pre- season physicals for jv and varsity football players in the public school athletic league. and the screenings are under way at the sports rehabilitation and performance center on east 71st street. a program this year. and now a new report finds gas prices are falling fast. aaa says the national average price of gas dropped 11 cents per gallon, in july. that's the quickest pace since january. last month, gas prices averaged $2.75 a gallon. and nationally, to 60 in new jersey. and 2.95 in connecticut and new york. no cash, no problem. shall we? as we go through the day today, it is is a beauty. the weekend is looking good. and hot today. not too sticky. i like that. and isolated afternoon storms are possible. and then well, even more sunshine for your day tomorrow. and how about that? and the humidity trend for today and tomorrow is comfortable. but as of monday we see a rise in the humidity levels so get out and enjoy. what is going to be a relatively pleasant weekend. if you like the 90s, we got it for you. on the vortex, satellite and radar, skies are looking good. later today, a few more clouds and a lance for showers and storms. as the cold front rolls on through. the culprit, the possibility of showers and storms, and triggered by that feature. but generally it is just a spotty chance today. i think you will love the start to your weekend, it will be hot, it will be sunny, it will be 90. and today we are looking good. and low humidity close to 90. we don't think we will get there. tomorrow with sunshine at 89. and still comfortable. as we get into monday, hot and humid out there. a look at the beach forecast now. shall we? for today, water temperatures are warming up. 72 to 77 degrees. and a mixture of sunshine and clouds. mid to upper 80s. and then on sunday, it is looking good, folks. and mid-80s for us. and total sunshine. then if you are heading up to the mountains today, you can't rule out the chance of an afternoon pop-up storm. a better bet at the beach today. we will be in the mid-80s in the mountains and tomorrow, it is nice and warm. mid-80s again. a look at the seven-day forecast. for today, it is 90 with the sunshine, overnight, mostly clear and 72. and tomorrow, 89 degrees. another sun filled day. as we get into monday, the humidity levels start to climb. so 92 will feel like 95 out in. tuesday, 89, with sunshine wednesday. we have a chance for some showers and thunderstorms. with a high of 86. and i'm pleased to say temperatures will be dropping off, as we move toward the end of the week. into the low 80s. which is more seasonable. but for today, it is hot. just as it should be. it is summer streets. one of the three saturdays you can come out and enjoy park avenue, of all of the closeups that happen here but the temperatures are warming up as well. here in the city, we are in the upper 70s. pushing no the 80s in the hamptons. and monticello, comfortable in the lower 70s. we have direct sunshine out here today. and that will really stay the case, as you can see, on the vortex satellite and radar picture, will is not a whole lot going on -- there is not a whole lot going on. it is looking good for today. as you go through the day though, a slight chance of a pop-up storm this afternoon. especially north and west of the city. but rolling through the running in brooklyn after a water main break near the barclays center. crews repairedded the busy section of flatbush avenue last night. the 2 and 3 subway lines were briefly shut down. and several buss had to be re- routed. no word what caused the break. the search is on for robbers targeting elderly homeowners in connecticut. several homes have been hit in stanford, and greenwich and darrian. and several incidents, the men posed as utility workers. investigators say they gained the victim's trust and stole valuables. police say it is always best to call the company before allowing anyone into your home on an unscheduled visit. we have exclusive video this morning, of a man who has been seen on a crime spree in staten island. you can see him hold up a clerk at a deli here stealing money and cigarettes. police believe he may have committed as many as six other robberies in july alone. cbs 2 dave carlin has the exclusive story. >> this is crazy. but twice in three weeks, what's the odds of that? >> mo eggoli is the owner of the bagels deli showing us surveillance video of the second armed robbery in the store this month. 4:30 a.m., this man with a gun believed to be in his mid-20s. walks in. very overdressed for the weather and demanding money for the clerk and has him toss in packs of cigarettes and leaves with the loot. >> i'm not saying it doesn't happen everywhere but not like this. >> police suspect this was the criminals return engagement. >> have you been hit twice in one month. what is your reaction to that? >> we are scared. >> on july 8 around 10:30 p.m., it was this clerk, ecrom kahn the unlucky one staring down a robber's gun. >> give me your money. >> sandwiched between the july 8 and july 31 robberies were four other hold-ups. july 22, 4:15 a.m. at the gnome zely in new spring feld. and july 25, 9:40 a.m. this time a gas station. the attendant was forced to hand over cash at gunpoint. the armed robbery spree continued july 27. at 9:45 p.m. at manor deli in castleton corners. july 29, 9:30 p.m. at a shell station on am voy road. >> wanted flyers popping up in stores across staten island. plenty of surveillance camera footage to draw images from it. because of the way the man is dressed. and it is difficult getting a detailed description. >> it is going to be hard to get somebody to work here. nobody wants to work with this. people come to work to do their job and go home. >> so far, the very busy armed robber has not hurt anyone. not yet. in annandale staten island, dave carlin, cbs 2 news. verizon workers in nine states could walk off the job today. a contract covering 39,000 workers including employees here in the tri-state area expired at midnight. the union says the telecom giant is demanding that workers sharply increase their health care contributions and make concessions on pensions. verizon has called the union's proposal unrealistic and out of touch in today's marketplace. well, cbs 2 has learned more about the intense security plans for the pope's visit in september. it calls for sniper routines and frozen zone force cars and pedestrians and radiation sec tors. and we learned there is a request to stop subways and commuter trains. cbs 2 political reporter marcia kramer has the exclusive details. >> penn station is the busiest train station in north america. some 600,000 commuters use the six subway lines and the long island railroad, and new jersey transit and amtrak. plans by pope francis to offer mass right above the station in madison square garden, at 6:00 p.m. on friday, september 25, rush hour, have law enforcement firms in hyper drive, worried about terrorism. >> you could potentially put some sort of bomb explosive device there. >> sources tell rbs cbs 2 that officials are working on a plan to close some station entrances and subways bypass penn station while the pope is. there and similar to the plan used during the 2004 republican convention when president bush spoke. in 2004, both entrances to amtrak were closed on 8th avenue. at 31 *9s and 33rd street. the two entrances in the middle of the block, the old taxi way and all four supway entrances on 8th and 33rd for the a, c, and e trains. federal, state and local officials have been working with the swiss guard on plans to protect the pope since january. sources tell cbs 2, the unprecedented measures will include sniper teams with long rifles on rooftops and massive frozen zones for vehicular and pedestrian traffic and no truck traffic and no parking before and during events. camera, radiation detectors, helicopters, to look for gunmen, and a hunt for drones. >> that is a real concern with us. so he is a different kind of person, he likes to get out and be with the people. >> so far, there has been no specific threat, officials are worried about isis, al qaeda, and lone wolves. >> if and when the pope gets out of of his already exposed vehicle and tries to mingle with the crowd, could there potentially be somebody there that is set on hurting him? >> so far, we do know the lirr will add extra trains for people who want to attend the pope's mass. sources say the nypd will also conduct random bomb sweeps at all of the locations where the pope is scheduled to be. new this morning, actor valerie harper is dispelling rumors she was in a coma. resting comfortably with her family this morning. she was rushed to the emergency room on wednesday, just before main playhouse. backstage. and the 75-year-old who has battled brain cancer posted on facebook, quote, i am happy to report i am not nor have i been in a coma. she went on to say the highlight with being escorted by two handsome young men and a pilot in a med-evac helicopter as the full moon lit the night sky. she said talk about movie magic. and angelina jolie is in myanmar this morning where she met with women working in factories in the nation's largest city. 0 an four day visit in her role as a special envoy for the ahead. more on that forecast, coming up, for you. and meanwhile, you probably hear a lot of advice how to keep cool and safe. and some tips actually work. some, not so much. cbs 2 dr. max gomez breaks down a few hot weather myths. >> reporter: let's start out with an easy one. hot and humid. so of course you're sweating. and you immediate to keep from getting hydrated so sports drinks are best to beat the heat? >> water. definitely recommend water. the quickest way to replenish the body. >> reporter: he is right. the vast majority of the time. >> unless -- >> if you're walking up and running and moving about, you can consider a sports or energy drink. in general, they are not necessary unless you're really working out in an intense fashion for more than an hour. >> sports drinks won't hurt you but most have extra sugar calories you don't need to rehydrate. don't confuse energy drinks for sports drinks. energy drinks have a lot of caffeine which can dehydrate you. and next, a surprising one. spicy foods cool you down. >> it is all about the flavor. a good spice, and it doesn't matter if it is 112 out, i will eat spicy food. >> spicy foods can cool you down. after all, spicy foods are eaten mostly in very hot climates for this reason. >> spicy foods actually make you sweat more. sot theory is if you have more sweat, you could cool yourself by evaporation. may help you. this weather? light clothing, is it really cooler than dark clothing? clothing. >> she is right of course, but an exception sort of. light colored loose fitting clothe but sun protection from the sun's rays, the dark cloth is better. >> and the more die that it contain, the less u.v. light that passes through. >> thanks, dr. max. the rising popularity of cycling has adults who never learned to ride a bike looking to finally learn. groups like bike new york offer free classes around the five buroughs and one woman drove in new jersey to the lower east side to learn something her father tried to teach her more than 20 years ago. she said it was an emotional ride. >> it is what i do. it is happy tears. mire dad tried to teach me -- my dad tried to teach me. he is not alive. it would be cool to do it. >> according to u-gov, a global research team about, 13% of adults in the u.s. between the ages of 18 and 34 do not know how to ride a bike. one woman in our area knows all about staying would say, folks, a little warmer today than tomorrow and the water temperature, in the low and mid-70s. and warming up. a mild forecast. the chance of an afternoon pop- up storm. no reason to stay home. the forecast, i think tomorrow, though, more ideal. with sunshine. and highs will be in the low to mid-80s. as we get into your seven-day forecast, here is what you can expect, 90 degrees, tons of sunshine, and tonight, 72, and mainly clear. and tomorrow, it is 89. and more sunshine again. and don't forget, that slight chance of storms this afternoon. as we get into monday, it is 92 degrees. and as we get into monday, remember, the humidity levels are climbing. so 92 will feel more like the mid-90s. and tuesday, 89. and partly cloudy. and wednesday, looking good at 86 but more clouds stories. police have released this central park. investigators say a 53-year-old man refused to give that man money. so the suspect put him in a choke hold. until he passed out. it happened thursday night by west drive and 79th street. police say when the victim woke were gone. a firefighter has died battling a wildfire, raging in california. 23 large fires, many sparked by lightning, are burning across the northern part of the state. hundreds of people have been forced to leave their homes, as firefighters continue to battle the flames from both the air and the ground. the u.s. forest service has said the firefighter killed was from south dakota. triple crown winner american pharoah hit the racetrack this morning in new jersey. he is preparing to run in the haskel invitational at monmouth park tomorrow. where he is the overwhelming favorite. the haskel will be american pharoah's first start since he became the first triple crown winner in 37 years. american pharoah is expected to be there. it is about a 20% chance. as we go beyond your weekend, monday, it is more muggy. 92 is going to feel like the mid-90s, folks. we are back talking about that crazy heat. on tuesday, 89 degrees. and partly cloudy, and wednesday, more clouds and 86. and the temperatures continue to decline from there. and so we are pretty much seasonable in the mid-80s. today is an above normal day. but a
