the little robot on a cross-country journey to san francisco. the goodness of strangers supposed to get him all the way. then this happens. how the happy little life of hitchbot came to such a sad end today, monday, august 3rd, 2015. from nbc news this is "today," with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a monday morning. you look so different, matt with your glasses. >> well thank you very much. >> matt is off this morning. we've got carson here and breaking news at the top this morning. it's our top story. the severe storms moving east now, after producing dangerous hail high winds and tornadoes across the midwest. here's nbc's john yang with the latest. >> reporter: severe weather turned deadly over the weekend when high winds caused a tent to collapse at a small festival in suburban chicago. >> we had one fatality three serious injured and 17 to 20 minor injuries. >> reporter: john anderson says his van, southern jack was just minutes away from performing at the wood dale prairie fest 25 miles northwest of chicago, when the storm hit, sending festival-goers scrambling for cover. >> basically, i was on stage left and just walked underneath the canopy and the poles started falling the other way. and then i saw the whole tent had fallen over. and from there, it was just chaos. >> i was really scared. i saw all these ambulance coming and the thunder was just so terrifying and the lightning. and i was really, really afraid. and then it just all happened flashed before my eyes. >> reporter: the dangerous storm systems across the midwest also brought tornadoes to the region. a huge twister touched down in iowa near nephewenville sunday evening. the tornado picked up debris and reportedly destroyed a few barns but no reports of injuries. in grays lake illinois another tornado may have touched down high winds and hail littering streets with toppled trees and power lines. the severe weather extending to greenville michigan. emergency crews working overnight to remove fallen debris. back in chicago's grant park the popular locala palooza festival shutting down. organizers ended the final day of the festival 30 minutes early when another storm hit the area. here in grays lake illinois a day of cleanup. parts of this building across the street. you can see that truck turned over. carson savannah back to you. >> what a night. jong yang in grays lake illinois thank you. meanwhile, in california thousands of homes are being threatened by a wildfire that nearly tripled in size over the weekend. emergency officials stepped up evacuation orders. joe fryer has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carson. this fire now at 54,000 acres, growing at a rate that's unprecedented. the flames have moved into a more remote area which is good news. but in these conditions they know things can change in an instant. the rocky fire is an unpredictable monster still growing this morning, even veteran firefighters say they have never seen anything like it. at one point, the flames tore through 20,000 acres in just five hours. >> the challenges the firefighters have been getting is that erratic winds and wind shift have been moving the fire in other directions. >> reporter: this single fire has consumed 84 square miles. that's an area larger than the city of st. louis. two dozen homes are already gone and thousands more have been evacuated. >> this is alarming. it's a little surreal. and just kind of keeps you on your toes. >> reporter: crews are intentionally setting backfires, burning up dry brush before the fire can get to it. national guard helicopters and air tankers are now on the scene after the governor declared a state of emergency. >> the purpose behind using this aircraft is to put retardant down so our firefighters on the ground can get in there and actually put the fire out. >> reporter: a new brushfire moved quickly through los padres national forest. 20 large fires are now burning. making things worse, mother nature keeps sending in storm clouds that produce lightning but little to no rain sparking hundreds of smaller fires. >> it's a little frightening, but we can get through it. >> reporter: temperatures are a little bit cooler today, which should help. the rocky fire is still only 5% contained. that shows just how hard it is to get things under control. about 2,000 firefighters are now on the scene here. carson and savannah? >> scary stuff there. joe fryer on the story for us in california. thanks. >> meantime this is a big weekend, the presidential race the republicans holding their first debate on thursday. and on the democratic side, a bit of a bombshell this weekend. speculation and reports that the vice president once again is seriously considering a run for president. nbc's andrea mitchel he will has all of it from washington this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. vice president joe biden's aides say he will decide by late summer. amidst that new speculation, he might run against hillary clinton in the democratic primaries. it is a decision possibly born in tragedy. a dying wish from his son, bo. >> my father my hero. the next vice president of the united states. joe biden. >> reporter: a wish also endorsed by biden's surviving son, hunter. their hope that their dad would challenge front runner hillary clinton, for the democratic nomination. >> he's been a heartbeat away from the presidency for eight years. i think he thinks he's qualified, and anybody in that position would be thinking about it. >> reporter: biden aide steve rickety is sounding out democratic regulars including some who already signed on with clinton. clinton has huge advantages. >> almost all the biden donors have gone over to hillary clinton already. so i think it's too late to man a serious campaign at this stage. >> reporter: biden has run for president twice before, and stumbled. and as vice president, he has occasionally been prone to gaffes. >> we both have something in common. we both married up. >> reporter: and at times, excessive exuberance. but biden has proved his loyalty and become a key adviser to the president. while clinton, although pulling way ahead of the other democrats, has recently suffered a sharp uptick in people saying they don't trust her, possibly a reaction to controversies like her private e-mails. the campaign says it's not concerned. >> there's a lot of views in the democratic party, and, you know we'll be prepared to handle whatever comes our way. >> reporter: in fact tomorrow clinton starts airing her first tv ads in iowa and new hampshire. aides say costing $2 million. >> i believe that when families are strong america is strong. >> reporter: a biden run would certainly put president obama in the awkward position of having to choose between his vice president and his former secretary of state. savannah? >> all right andrea thank you so much. david axelrod worked as a senior white house adviser and top strategist for both obama-biden campaigns. david, good morning. good to see you. >> good morning, savannah. good to see you. >> all right. how real is this? do you think the vice president is seriously considering a run? >> well look at it through his eyes. he was a united states senator for 36 years. very distinguished career there. he was one of the -- he's been one of the most constructive vice presidents in history, very close relationship with the president. the middle class issue that is now the meme of this campaign has been the theme of his whole political career. and so he's probably looking at this and saying why not me. but then there is the other side of the equation which is what it takes to put a presidential campaign together against a very formidable opponent. and i think that is a real big reality check here. so i'm a little skeptical about -- the bombshell of the weekend. >> sometimes the speculation is just that it's out of thin air, comes from nowhere. sometimes as you well know as a former white house top adviser, it is deliberately planted in the press. it's a trial balloon, to see if the support is there. do you think that's what we're seeing here? do you think the vice president or those close to him have let this kind of float out into the ether to see what people think of it? >> well someone let it out into the ether. the question is whether it was him. you know there's no doubt in my mind that he believes himself to be a peer of secretary clinton's, and probably feels that he would be a stronger nominee. but whether he wanted it to come out in this way, i have some doubts. and he really has to measure, savannah a cost benefit analysis. he has attained a great stature as a senior statesman within the democratic party. and does he want to risk all of that in a battle that he would be very uphill. >> it's very personal. the vice president has told close aides, close associates that his son, bo biden, from his hospital bed, urged him to run. in fact the "new york times" wrote about it this weekend in some detail. bo was losing his announce and the right side of his face was partially paralyzed, but he had a mission. he tried to make his father promise to run. how much of this renewed consideration do you think stems from that from the emotion of the loss of beau biden and his request that his father run? >> i spent some time with the vice president and i think anybody who has knows just how hard that loss has hit him and how close he was to his son, and what a loss this has been. but again, i think the other side of him, this is a guy who has been a presidential candidate or touted as one since 1972. he's run twice. he knows what it takes. and i think that discussion has to be had yet. the emotion is powerful but it's not enough to make a decision to run for president. >> i'll put you on the spot before we go here. you're a strategist. would you advise him to run? >> i would not. because i know what it takes to put a presidential campaign together. and it is late in the game. secretary clinton, for all her problems some of them self inflicted, still has a very high rating among democrats. and that of course is what determines who the nominee will be. and a big head start. so you know i really have such a high regard for joe biden. i think he has been a great vice president, great public official. i would hate to see him risk it all on a campaign that likely wouldn't succeed. >> david axelrod, always good to get your perspective. thank you very much. >> okay good to be with you. meantime police in memphis are stepping up the manhunt for a suspect accused of killing an officer during a traffic stop. let's get more from nbc's kerry sanders in memphis. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. police say that officer sean bolton was shot and killed by a man who is a convicted bank robber. why did he allegedly shoot the officer? well that is unclear. but detectives believe that the officer was approaching a car where the suspect had less than two grams of marijuana. of that's about enough to make three joints. this morning in memphis, a manhunt is under way for the killer of officer sean bolton. sunday night, friends and colleagues in tears brought flowers to the street where he was gunned down. >> when you look at this individual, you're looking at a coward. >> reporter: memphis police and u.s. marshals are combing the city looking for this man, tremaine willbourn who they say shot officer bolton at a traffic stop saturday night, apparently police say, after he interrupted a drug deal. >> to show how senseless this is we're talking about less than two grams of marijuana. >> reporter: as the officer lay more totally wounded, a bystander grabbed his police radio. >> please please hurry up. >> reporter: taking the desperate measure, because neighbors say the 911 lines were busy. shot several times -- >> call an ambulance! >> ambulance is already en route. >> reporter: officer bolton was rushed to the hospital. a bulletproof vest he was wearing, unable to save him. sunday police recovered a gun in a nearby field which they believe could be the murder weapon. >> we as a community must come together and remember that all lives matter. not just black lives. not just white lives. but all lives matter. >> reporter: there is a reward being offered of $10,000 leading to the capture of the suspect. meantime the other man who was in the car turned himself in spoke to police and was released. carson? >> kerry sanders, thank you. >> such a sad story. natalie is here with the top stories of the morning, including a bad accident overnight. >> terrible story in new jersey. several people were injured, including a police officer after a chain reaction crash that sent a car flying on to the sidewalk. this happened in jersey city. and witnesses say a speeding minivan lost control and slammed into other vehicle, sending that car into a group of pedestrians. multiple people were taken to the hospital including the officer who is expected to be okay. the driver of the minivan was arrested but there is no word on what charges he faces. investigators in new mexico say explosions at two churches sunday morning were deliberate and meant to harm. a mailbox at a baptist church in las cruise he is exploded and another one about three miles away near a catholic church. no one was injured, fortunately. authorities are now following several leads but cannot link the attacks to any one group at this time. this morning, a kansas community is remembering a 9-year-old bat boy who died overnight. kaiser carlile was accidentally struck in the head by a baseball bat during a weekend game. >> reporter: the liberal bee jays announced that their bat boy, kaiser carlile, passed away after being struck in the head during a game saturday. witnesses say kaiser who was wearing a helmet ran on to the field to retrieve a bat when he was accidentally hit by a player taking practice swings. >> he was swinging, and it hit him in the helmet knocked him down. he got back up but he went right back down again, and everybody came out and helped him. >> reporter: pairramedics responded immediately, but kaiser remained in critical condition over the weekend before passing away. tributes flooded social media overnight. one photo showing the team kneeling together in prayer after learning the tragic news. one player caden simmons, posted online knowing your last moments were on the baseball field makes it easier through this whole process, because you were doing what you loved. another teammate easton johnson, wrote, you are a special, amazing boy, and heaven has opened its loving arms for you. we'll be seeing you up there, buddy. >> meanwhile, the bee jays honored kaiser during their game sunday writing his initials on their hats and even on the scoreboard. they credited their 8-0 win to their beloved bat boy. such a sad story. a pilot was killed sunday after a helicopter made a crash landing during an air show in russia. four military helicopters were performing a maneuver when you see the one chopper started spinning out of control. it went down quickly and then burst into flames when it hit the ground. the cause of the crash is now under investigation. well if you thought it was dangerous to be a nascar driver speeding around the track at 190 miles per hour try being part of the pit crew. take a look at what happened sunday at the pocono raceway. driver brad keselowski came in just a bit too fast and he hit two of his crew members, one of them, as you saw, went flying. so did that tire. the two crew members both got up and finished their jobs. they are both okay. apparently he's come in a little too hot before when he comes into the pit. so -- that's a tough one all right. glad everybody is okay. >> yeah. >> went right for the jack to continue his job. >> they went right back at it. everything matters, right? >> thank you, brittney. let's check traffic with jessica boyington. >> we're jammed along montgomery drive in both directions. 18 minutes headed eastbound into the center city area from the blue route up toward the vine. 21 minutes on 95. that earlier accident scene cleared out of the way. 95 northbound approaching the commodore barry bridge. all clear. more than two dozen cars we're tacking about vandal working in the area of 10th and 13th street woke up to find their tires slashed. witnesses reported seeing a heavy set man with a knife mac his way through the neighborhood. we'll have more news coming up in 20 minutes. ♪ ♪ i'm on top of the world ♪ back now at 7:30 on this monday morning, it's the 3rd of august 2015. great crowd out on the plaza. they're all cutis. nice to have you along on monday morning. what's making headlines this morning. thousands of homes are being evacuated by a wildfire north of san francisco. 24 homes already destroyed. it's one of at least 20 large fires burning across the state. and an intense storm is being blamed for a deadly tent collapse at a festival near chicago. a 35-year-old man was killed when he was hit by flying debris and 15 others had to be treated at area hospitals. and an investigation is under way to find whoever planted explosives outside two churches in las cruces new mexico. the blast caused minor damage to buildings but no injuries reported. we'll begin this half hour with another american under fire this morning, accused of hunting and killing a lion in africa. willie is here with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. good morning, guys. the death of cecil the lion has ignited controversy around the world. the doctor behind it now in hiding. and wildfire officials in zimbabwe are now claiming another doctor this one from pennsylvania has killed a lion illegally. according to a statement by zimbabwe national parks, jan seski illegally killed a lion during a hunt in april. his guide, who since has been arrested and is cooperating with authorities, hunteded without a quote or permit. seski appears in several photos online with other trophy killings including with an elephant. he could not be reached for comment and there was no answer at his house. seski is the second american doctor accused of killing a lion illegally in a week following the death of the famed lion cecil. zimbabwe is seeing the extradition of walter palmer the minnesota dentist accused in the death. palmer has not been seen. he stated to his knowledge, everything about this trip was legal and properly handled and conducted. over the weekend a tribute to cecil was projected on to the empire state building. on sunday cecil's brother, jericho, was confirmed to be alive after false reports surfaced that he too had been killed. a field researcher snapped a photo of him sunday morning. >> things are going to be hard for him, but he's a mature lion he's 11 years old himself. >> reporter: the two lion killings are sparking a heated debate over the practice of big game hunting, both illegal and legal. two avid hunters from idaho are among those drawing backlash online after posting photos of their legal kills, like this giraffe. some commenters calling one of the hunters human garbage and far worse for killing a giraffe. the hunter previously has fanned the flames posting a meme challenging her critics to stay tuned. you're going to have so much more to be upset about. officials in zimbabwe have promised to crack down on illegal hunting in the area and just this morning, all hunts of lions, leopards and elephants are being suspended near the national park where cecil the lion was killed. carson? >> willie thank you. sabrina and aaron nielson who posted those photos of their african hunting trip are now with us via facetime from south africa. good morning to you both. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> sabrina, let me start with you so we understand the time line here. when you posted those photos to your facebook feed were you aware of the story of dr. palmer and cecil the lion in zimbabwe? >> i think it happened about the same time. i think i heard about it the day after that i got my giraffe. >> reporter: and just to be clear, what you are doing in south africa is totally legal. let me ask you a question. if dr. palmer is charged with taking part in an illegal hunt in zimbabwe do you support him being extradited back there to face justice? >> you know aaron is the one to talk about it the lion issue. he has followed it a lot closer than i have. what's your opinion? >> well look i would say this. i would say if the man is in fact charged with a crime, i think it's something to consider. but i also believe that when a hunter -- when a foreign hunter travels to a foreign country, he is at the discretion of the guide and outfitter that he puts his trust in. and so to start charging foreign people under crimes like this in a place where he likely was completely unaware of most of the circumstances, i think would be a very slippery slope. >> all right. let me point out what you guys are doing in south africa is entirely legal. the south african government is aware. sabrina, i think it was your posting about killing the giraffe that made most people angry. a giraffe sunday a predator it's a plant-eater. and you wrote, quote, my emotion after getting him was a feeling i will never forget. why did you put it just that way? >> because it's not just -- to me it's not just killing animal. it's the hunt it's -- there is a lot of personal things that happened in my life recently that has added to that and i won't get into that or disclose those feelings. but when you -- when you hunt an animal it's not -- everybody just thinks we're cold-hearted killers. and it's not that. it's -- there is a -- how do i want to describe it? >> there is a connection. >> there is a connection with the animal. and just because we hunt them doesn't mean we don't have a respect for them. but giraffes are very dangerous animals. they could hurt you seriously very quickly. >> sabrina, there has been a lot of backlash on social media. you posted the photos seemingly taunting people with what you guys are doing in south africa. somebody posted your job, the name of the president of the organization where you work. are you worried about some sort of retribution at work? >> well you know i am in a way. but everything i've done i have approved time off, i've been on vacation. and everything i have done here is legally. so how can you fault somebody because of their hobby? you're always going to have employees that you don't agree with what they do on their spare time. but how can an employer chastise you for something you do on your personal time? >> right. >> if it's legally done. >> all right. sabrina, aaron nielsen, thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you. the images are stunning to look at that is for sure. we'll take a turn and get a check of the weather from ms. dylan in for al today. >> how are you guys feeling about the heat? >> reporter: i'm face-to-face with police. >> drop the weapon! >> reporter: is my gun real or just a toy? >> let me see your hands! >> reporter: in this demo they only have a second to decide. what would you have done just now? >> shot you. i actually pulled the trigger. >> reporter: police say toy guns like this confused for real guns on the streets. even used in real crimes to scare victims. >> we have had 63 people shot in new york because law enforcement officers thought the toy gun was a real gun. eight fatalities. that's not acceptable. that shouldn't be acceptable to anyone. >> reporter: so today new york attorney general eric schneiderman reaching a landmark settlement with some of the country's largest retailers, including kmart, walmart.com and amazon fining them for selling toy guns that look real and getting them to agree to stop selling them statewide. this is one of the toy guns you've been talking about. and it does look like a real gun from here. it has an orange point on the end, so this meets the federal standard but this would be illegal in new york. >> what we do in new york city is require that the entire gun be brightly colored. this is an example of a gun under our agreements with these companies you could sell in new york. no one is going to hand over their wallet because they're getting held up with this. and no police officer is ever going to mistake this for a real gun and shoot someone in a tragic incident. >> reporter: but even with this new settlement we were still able to go online and buy the real looking toy guns. getting them shipped to other states including michigan arizona and new jersey. where it's still legal. so how dangerous can these toys be? we set off a bold experiment with the rochester police bringing out officers one at a time. we don't tell them why they're here or what's about to happen. just to react. they're using training guns so i stay safe. just so you know what's about to happen i'm holding one of those toy guns in my hand now and we know it's a toy gun because it has this orange cap on it. i'm going to stick it in my belt and turn around. then i'm going to pull out the toy gun and point it at them only for about a second. that's all it takes for an officer to have to make a split second decision. will they shoot? >> there you go. >> sky is the limit. let's go inside natalie has a check of the top stories. >> good morning once again. and one person was killed and more than 20 injured by violent weather across the midwest. a storm flattened a large tent at a music festival in suburban chicago on sunday killing a man. witnesses said tables and chairs were also blown around. the event had to be cancelled, and funnel clouds were also spotted in the area. in downtown chicago, rough weather there for some popular lollapalooza festival to shut down a half hour early. every man made item that washes ashore in the indian ocean is being examined for ties to missing airlines flight 370. the discovery of an airplane part last week touched off the search. bill good morning. >> reporter: good morning. from a stormy coastline that will make any new searches here very difficult. the hunt for debris though, has widened from this island with an alert now right across this part of the indian ocean. the coast of reunion is long but now all the countries and islands in this part of the indian ocean are being asked to look out for aircraft debris. that would mean searching more than 4,000 miles of coastline. over the weekend, people have been giving police objects they found on beaches, but none of them is related to the missing plane. the beaches here are littered with metal and rusting junk. any debris from mh-370 will now have scattered across a vast area. >> it's an enormous band. and there isn't very much debris anymore, because a lot of it probably has sunk down. so we're really searching for a needle in a haystack here. >> reporter: the aircraft part that has been found, a wing flap from a boeing 777, won't be examined at a specialist lab until wednesday. a suitcase found nearby will be analyzed to try to match it to the dna of the missing passengers and crew. for their relatives, like steve wang who lost his mother it's another agonizing delay. >> this is the only way to find the result. but it takes time. >> reporter: it may be late this week before we know if the debris found is from the missing plane. there is quite a storm here. the ocean very rough. and you can see how any aircraft debris could easily get smashed up or sink. local people though hoping that these currents these huge swells will bring more debris on to the beaches here. back to you. >> bill neely and reunion island thanks. with the first televised republican debate just days away donald trump has surged to the lead in a new nbc news "wall street journal" poll. trump is the first choice of 19% of the republican primary voters polled. he's followed by wisconsin governor scott walker with 15%. jeb bush surgeon turned politician ben carson and texas senator ted cruz. australian surfer nick fanning is already back in the water just weeks after being attacked by a shark. in an interview with "60 minutes" on channel 9 in australia, he says he just had another close encounter on his very first time back surfing, six days after that attack. he says he came within feet of another shark. fanning made headlines across the globe after he was attacked in jeffees bay in south africa back on july 19th. you know yogurt of course can be a very healthy snack, unless you get your head stuck in the container, as it happened to this guy. a police officer in michigan spotted this baby skunk running in circles, blinded by the yogurt cup. the brave officer then carefully removed the caner and then did what he had to do jump away possibly not aware that baby skunks can't spray like adults do. but i think we would all have the same reaction get out of there as fast as you can. back over to you, savannah. >> all right, natalie. yeah take no chances, right. a popular brand of sunscreen is feeling the heat from some consumers this morning. sheinelle, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the honest company is getting a thumbs down from people who complain the company's nontoxic sunscreen doesn't work. many people used the products because they don't want harmful chemicals. but with that are they sacrificing the effectiveness of the product? >> overall, our dream -- >> known for their safe and ecofriendly products -- >> we created the honest company, because we had to. >> reporter: the honest company, co founded by jessica alba is now under fire by some customers, claiming the brand's sunscreen has failed them from the scorching rays. angry customers taking to twitter, posting pictures of themselves showing serious sunburns after using the product, described on the company's site as an spf 30 sunscreen, having a broad spectrum protection. frustrated reviews on the product's amazon page claimed it does not work and warned others to not use. mom greta sabler says she bought the sun screen on a recent trip to costco. >> i trusted the brand and i trusted the product. >> reporter: the results? after applying it early and often as directed she said -- >> she got really burned on her shoulders, her arms her legs and her face. so she was burned everywhere. i was very angry. >> reporter: the possible reason for the negative feedback could be attributed to a recent change of ingredient. our nbc chicago station reporting that just this year the company dropped the amount of zinc oxide from 20% to 9.3%. to put it in perspective, a majority of other sunscreens using zinc oxide as the main ingredient contain around 18 to 25%. when it removed the zinc the company says it did add other ingredients to keep it effective. in a statement to nbc news the honest company said after the product was tested pi a third party, the results show that our product is effective and safe for use as an 80-minute water-resistant, fda's highest rating spf 30 sunscreen lotion. and when used as directed adding that the number of complaints received on our own website about our sunscreen lotion constitute less than one half of 1% of all units actually sold at honest.com. >> all-natural isn't necessarily good and chemical isn't necessarily bad. >> although not all reviews of the sunscreen are unfavorable, there have been more than 100 complaints online. the company says they quote, stand behind the safety and efficacy of this product. savannah? >> sheinelle, thank you. so what should you be looking for in a sunscreen? dr. deborah watten berg is a board certified dermatologist here in new york. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> we don't want people to take away from this oh those natural sunscreens don't work as well unless that's what you're saying. i mean should you be worried about that? >> no absolutely not. zinc oxide based sunscreens are actually great products which deflect the sun, and they have been around for years and they're safe and effective. what happened with this particular product only a chemist is going to be able to tell us if it became deactivated, if there wasn't enough product in there. and they need to do testing and try to figure that out. >> that's interesting, because there were some reports that perhaps the company had lowered its formula, that there was less zinc in some formulations. is that alone an issue? like should people be reading the label just to see zinc but how much zinc is in it? >> people should read labels of course. they should know what they're buying and looking for products if they want a chemical-free sunscreen, use one that has zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. but if you're not particularly sensitive, you can also use products that contain other active sunscreen ingredients, like benzine or some of the other products available. >> so what's your bottom line? >> now that it's more of a trend now with die will he jenner and her lips i wanted them even more. >> reporter: whatever you want to change there seems to be an injectable chemical scalpel or laser to achieve it. and the $12 billion business is showing no signs of slowing down. recent cover of "time" magazine declared nip tuck or else. >> you stand out more now if you don't have it. >> right. the people who aren't doing it are going to become you know a little bit more obvious. >> reporter: so what's in and what's out these days. we asked dr. jennifer levine. >> what's hot with butts? >> bigger fuller higher. >> boobs. >> smaller and more natural. >> lips. >> full. >> face? >> not too tight. >> time even broke down the most popular procedures by region. in the northeast, nose jobs rule. southeast, liposuction. and in the south, the west and the midwest, it's all about the cup size. but not ready to take the permanent plunge just yet? dr. norman roe created the instabreast. he injects saline right into the body building a fuller breasts that lasts just 24 hours. >> this is like test-driving a ferrari. >> that's exactly what it is. it's kind of like try before you buy. >> i've always been curious about how i would look with actual permanent breast implants. >> in 20 minutes, sheena went from an a to a c cup. >> it feels like just a little squishy, like i said natural. and not too overwhelming. >> reporter: one of the biggest trends doctors are seeing is younger patients. kathryn fagen opted for botox at just 25. you don't have any wrinkles, barely. >> i kind of want to prevent the small lines that are forming. >> reporter: kristen ingersoll started treatments in her early 30s to ward off aging in her late 40s and beyond. trying everything from botox to alt therapy which uses sound waves to build collagen. >> it's just like the apple, we put the lemon it to try and keep it from getting brown. so i'm trying to find a way to just stay as fresh as possible. >> i hear you. as a 42-year-old mom of five girls, i've made the choice to try some procedures too. started in my early 30s with a little botox and i also just tried alt therapy, the procedure that you just saw on the piece. it's the only fda-approved procedure to lift tighten and tone skin using ultrasound. and carson, this is where you're supposed to announce to the world that i look like i'm about 25. >> you do. why did you start in your 30s? was that sort of preventative to reverse aging for later? >> it really was. i was thinking ahead. also i do have lines in my forehead that i don't love. so it just instantly they're gone. so it felt like such a nice, quick fix. and i really was thinking down the road. because here i am now i started in my early 30s, and here i am now 42. so it creeps up on you fast. >> well you look great, andrea. let's bring in sara ecenberger. good to have you here. >> absolutely. >> this is obviously a very personal decision the idea of going under the knife for plastic surgery in general, is that right? it's different for everybody. >> exactly. and it's a personal choice. some may choose to age gracefully and love the wrinkles that give you the experience. some may want to take away some years. >> let's walk through some of the decades. in your 20s and 30s, you think you have nothing to worry about. >> right. this is when prevention is key here. so what you're going to do is use different fillers, different injectables, which are really going to slow the aging process down. and so what an injectable is you use around the eye area the forehead area and that's going to constrict the muscle movement. so you're going to slow down the aging process. where fillers are exactly just that. they're going to fill in the hollows or fine lines and wrinkles. so you see that last -- under eye circles and also the nasal labial fold. >> is there a lot of 20 and 30-year-olds having fillers and injectables. >> yes, because it prevents wrinkles from forming on your skin. >> wow. moving down the line here. >> so working into your 40s, this is the age where you start to see aging first appear. it could be lifestyle related. a lot of people, if applicable after you have children you start to see things change. so what you're going to do here is in your 40s, two different things will happen. your face is going to lose fat, where your body gains fat and it stores pockets of fat, as well. so for your face you'll do injectables, especially the nasal labial folds, as you lose fat and start to lose that form. and it really gets deep. so injectables to use that. and fat transfers, which is interesting, because you take fat from your body like your thighs or your stomach, places you don't want it. and do a lino suction and move it somewhere else. then it fills in the hollows. liposuction, the more traditional method to help to shape and contour the body. and different skin tightners, an ultrasound technology to firm the skin. and lasers a magic wand of light therapy. >> a lot of options in the 40s. 50-plus is where you really start to see the aging take effect. >> this is where your skin starts to sag. your best solution for those looking for more extreme results are your face lifts. and it's not the face-lift of yesteryear that had a tight, pulled look. it's actually going to be more about reconturing the skin and working with the muscles and. nbc 10 news starts now. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. few minutes before 8:30. our first alert forecast meteorologist brittney shipp. >> we will tee temperatures in the low 90s but the humidity returns. there's a live look at cape may where folks are setting up and the current temperatures throughout the region if you're about to head out, 76 in philadelphia, same thing in atlantic city 9 wildwood and 70 degrees in the poconos. eight hour city planner shows temperatures by 1:00 p.m. at 89 by 4:00 91. vai. >> a check on traffic with jessica boyington. not surprisingly 95 looks like a parking lot. >> new traffic patterns and active zones. looks like this girard avenue really messed up here jammed if you're headed southbound or northbound. see a 27 minute drive time from wood hey renhaven towards the vine street expressway. see that added delay there. the 42 freeway starting to see delays headed northbound towards the walt whitman bridge or to the 295 interchange there. as for the area bridges, doing okay seeing a little volume on the ben headed westbound into the city with two lanes locked with construction. >> thank you. septa's one day lottery for regional rail passes is up and running open until 11:59. 18 rail stations will shuttle people in and out of the center stay during the papal visit. the winners announced thursday via e-mail able to bypasses for $10 each. more news in another half hour. ♪ it is 8:30 on "today," monday august 3rd, 2015. a beautiful morning out on our plaza. and look there that is the cast of "fantastic four," miles teller michael b. jordan kate mara and jamie bell greeting fans. we'll talk to them in a few moments. >> yep, and we have another movie star in the house. we all know that. the one and only meryl streep is here worked with her own daughter. she plays a rock star. so we've got that -- >> she is a rock star. she is literally a rock star. >> fun, fun movie. guys are your bags packed? >> yeah. >> first of all, i feel i should check your hands for calluses. you actually learned to play guitar. >> they're gone. i've been an opera singer for five months now. >> meryl streep goes to all these great lengths to get into the role but learning guitar in a matter of a few months has to be one of the biggest things you've taken on. >> whoa. more confused yeah. yeah. it was a challenge, but, you know i was working with some great musicians. rick springfield, joe vitale. they're veterans of our business. they have been -- i mean they're extraordinary musicians. the so i felt like in this -- to respect them i had to do my best to learn. >> and just in case people think this is learning c, d and g and they'll just cut around it you actually did live performances. >> yeah we did. we did do live performances. and that was jonathan demi who is a great music-lover. and he has a little -- almost theory of authenticity. it has to really happen. it has to really happen in front of you. and so we performed in a little fake club in the docks in brooklyn. and we would play and -- for the movie and the extras would say, man, i wish this was a real club i would come here. >> and there are several songs we hear you sing. you have that great raspy kind of bonnie raitt voice we just heard on tape. and you play in what the "wall street journal" calls genetically perfect casting, across from your daughter mamie gummer. she plays your daughter in the movie as well. what was that like because you have some very intense scenes with her. she is very mad at you in this movie. >> well that's happened before. and i don't know where she pulled it up from but she really enjoyed railing at me. and i think they would all like to do a movie with me. >> work out some issues? >> but actually you know we're very close. and it was -- and she is nothing like julie and i'm really nothing like ricky. so it was -- it was acting. >> yeah. >> you know? and she's really good. and so you know i was really proud of her. >> you must be. i was going to say, this is not your first scene with your daughter. we actually have some video of your very first scene with ms. mamie gummer. >> you do? >> circa -- i think she must have been the age of 1 or so there. there you are. >> she was playing 1. >> but she was very good. we could see then she had the bug. did you encourage her to go into the profession? did you have any choice in the matter? >> you have children right? you don't have a choice much. i mean yes, i was -- i was very thrilled that she and her sister grace both want to be actresses. and are actresses. and are going to support me in my old age. and i no longer -- do it. but no she's -- she's always been sort of dramatic. i don't think i'll get in trouble with her for saying that. but she's always been fierce and fearless and had no trouble expressing her feelings. and that's sort of the job description. for an actor. >> the director jonathan demi also told you guys not to talk to each other onset to try to keep the tension real. how did that work out? >> we had a screen test together the three of us. and that was just sort of the start of feeling how natural we all sort of vibed together which was nice. >> hugely important. i'm sure it doesn't happen all of the time onset. >> no sometimes you hate the people you work with. >> shows how good of an actor you really are. >> tell us the character and super power you have. >> ben grim also known as "the thing." in this version of he's really just a regular kid, directionless, in high school one friend always gets him in trouble. but he's very loyal to this friend and protects him. and then he becomes something very different. >> very cool. kate? >> i play sue storm. and she is the sister of johnnie storm. she is pretty shy. very smart and very passionate about science. and she becomes the invisible woman. >> very cool. >> johnnie storm. you know little bit impatient, not really knowing exactly what path he wants to go down. sometimes, you know kids and teenagers, they don't do exactly what their parents expect of them especially if it's not as cool for them. so -- this accident happened and he kind of embraces the powers and there is kind of a sense of purpose. >> maybe a little too much. >> i play reid richards obviously extremely intelligent, super genius and obsessed with -- >> you're so humble. >> it's reid richards. we're making a movie! you're acting crazy. reid richards super genius obsessed with dimensional travel and wants to invent the quantum gate. >> and very stretchy. >> yes. >> the other part of the movie that is so good for you guys you act in different environments. this has to be tough with the special effects. the green screen, that's another part of what i think can save a movie like this with so much special effects, the pure acting chops you all four have. was that difficult, michael? >> the green screen you have to trust the director you have to trust that you know what you're doing, the movements you're doing is matching exactly what they're going to put in post. so that was probably the hardest thing. >> but kate has to talk to you as you're on fire. can you turn that thing off? because you know how to pronounce it. feijoada. >> she took two years of portuguese. so you know the deal. >> and you know how to cook in brazilian style. >> it really is the national dish of brazil okay? it involves black beans and a whole lot of pork. in brazil typically, there are things like pig ears and pig hooves. we're not going to do that. of the i made it a little bit easier. i think more our american audience will like. here we start with the black beans, dried black beans, bacon, pork shoulder beef short rib, chorizo, onion, peppers, a lot of beef. did i mention? and pork. garlic chicken stock. ham hock. more pork. >> wow. >> we've got cider vinegar, salt and pepper. >> meat and meat. how do we do the beans? let's talk about the beans. we used dry beans, because this is a slow-cooker recipe. the dry beans, by soaking it first overnight, it allows the beans to rehydrate. now, there is a speed soak you can do as well if you're somebody who maybe didn't think to soak them overnight, which happens all of the time with me. what you can do is you can put them in a pot in hot water, or in water, boil it for two minutes, speed soak it then by letting it sit in the pan of hot water for about an hour later. okay? so we're taking our beans, putting them in our slow cooker here. >> are canned beans a no-no? >> you can make canned beans, but they'll probably get mushy and fall apart. here's a secret ingredient. >> where do you get that? >> anywhere. any spanish food section, you'll see it. so the beans are set in there. in the pan already, i've cooked two slices of bacon in this pan. you want to keep that bacon fat, it's delicious, okay? and then we put our pork shoulder in there. it's already brown. basically, we're browning all our meat. so i'm going to put our pork in here. >> as you do that i'm checking in with our taste tester. >>. >> this is like pork palooza. >> it is. >> okay. no hooves in here. >> no hooves no ears. >> we're going to braise our short ribs. and we have a minute left. while these braise i move over here to the short ribs. these short ribs into the pot. >> wow. >> it's a lot of steps, as you see. but very worth it. once you get everything in here -- >> once you get everything in the pot, then you're letting it sit for six hours. meanwhile here i'm going to do some onions. >> you saute first. >> saute the onions keeping the fat in there. as i mentioned, not a light dish. people eat feijoada on saturdays, first of all, because it's a labor of love. then also saturday you can take a nap afterwards. >> i'm thinking you go to church the next day and confess. >> here we put our chicken stock. okay? if you want the ham hock it's optional. adds more smokiness and flavor. >> okay. >> the chorizo. >> that is not optional. sausage. >> you're going to cover that up for me my dear. >> yep. >> we're going to get it going. we've set it for six hours. so moving over here -- >> five seconds! >> here's what it looks like guys. and you love it . good morning. i'm tracy davidson. we're in for another day of heat and humidity. let's get the details from first alert meteorologist brittney shipp. brittney? >> we have new information about a story we brought you as breaking news earlier this morning. police tell us that they have arrested the person of interest they questioned about a rash of tire slashings overnight in south philadelphia. more than two dozen woke up to find the damage. a witness tells nbc 10 she saw a man slashing tires on ellsworth street early this morning. more tires were slashed on south 13th street. fire crews put out a house fire in philadelphia's germantown neighborhood overnight around 12:30 on east price street. officials say it appears the fire started in the basement. everyone got out safely. today water department crews are making repairs in bustleton after an 8 inch main broke yesterday on ferndale avenue and about 50 homes have not had water service since that happened. in delaware congressional leaders are hosting a veterans job fair at the fire hall on green street. it runs from 10:00 to 2:00 this afternoon. we'll have another update in 25 minutes. always get updates with the nbc 10 news app. thanks for watching. i'm tracy davidson. taking a look at the headlines. kraft is recalling 36000 cases of individually wrapped cheese slices. it says a strip of the plastic film they used to wrap the slices can remain stuck to the slice and cause a choking hazard. there are three reports of choking. the recall covers three and four-pound boxes of kraft singles, american and white american cheese. a popular brand of sunscreen is feeling the heat from some consumers. the honest company co founded by jessica alba is getting poor reviews from people who complained the company's nontoxic sunscreen doesn't work. the possible reason for the negative feedback could be attributed to a recent change of ingredients. our nbc chicago station reporting the company dropped the amount of zinc oxide from 20% to 9.3%. the company says they stand behind the safety and efficacy of this product. a foam crib mattress by stork craft has been recalled for failing to meet federal standards for flammability. affected mattresses were made between august 2014 and january 2015, and consumers should stop using the mattress and contact stork craft for a free barrier cover. mission accomplished. mission impossible rogue nation was a dominant number one at the box office this weekend. taking in an estimated $56 million. >> what you could do is go and buy that designer rug but really, really small. like a runner size or a 3 x 5 size. and then you get a woven sea grass rug, and tamron, if you can do that with me. so you get a woven sea grass rug underneath from retailers like overstock.com wayfair.com. >> and this is what it looks like in a room. >> so you still get that expensive designer look but for affordable prices. >> that looks great. let's come over here and pillows, and they can be so expensive. >> so expensive. >> you found a way to do this for a lot less. >> yes, exactly. i went online went to the clearance section, got a little bit overa yard of fabric for literally $6. if you want to do this with me. >> you call this pillow origami. >> origami for pillows. you fold just like this and then you take the ends just like this. almost like swad willing a baby. and then at home, you can iron the creases to make it look really polished tie it up. >> you are doing a great job. >> tuck in the ends. and then i do the designer karate chop at the end which likes it look -- and you can't even tell. >> i was stunned by how much the throw pillows cost. that's smart. >> and a project i can do. >> you did great. >> lamps and you say that it may just be about our shade. >> exactly. so these are discount bargain basement lamps. and you know what, you can't tell from the base. this could be a $400 lamp but the give-away is the shade. so if the shade is super inexpensive it can look inexpensive. >> so we swap out the shade? >> and actually, do you mind -- >> no not at all. what i did is i went on to google you know, custom lamp shades. this is from an etsy shop. look at this look. >> super cute. >> this could be a $400 lamp. you would never know. >> so you just do a little research and find the right shade. very nice. let's talk about furniture. and the legs of furniture can be a tell-all if it's a cheaply made piece. >> so much discount furniture has the same boring leg. here is a before. so what i did is just swapped out the furniture legs. this is a really classy look. again you can just google replacement furniture legs. but these are from pretty pegs.com. >> look at that. yeah. and look at this. with the gold. >> very chic. >> and then here i have an upholstered stool with the pink legs on the bottom for a kids' room. the idea is to make your discount stuff look custom. >> what about wall art that can also cost a fortune? >> even if you buy art on a discount site the shipping ends up costing a lot. so area rugs is a great inexpensive way to get wall art on your walls. this is from homegoods.com. you can find stuff on overstock, really small area rugs very very inexpensive. so these are called upholstery nails. put them up every inch or so. on the bottom i put some self adhesive velcro to make sure the rug stays. >> great ideas. >> lori thank you so much. great ideas, as always. coming up next, do you find it hard to relax and unplug, even when you're on vacation? sasha is deputy editor of "women's health" magazine and we have the author of "your next big thing." good morning to you both. sasha, start with you. this is a real thing. career compulsive disorder. actual condition. >> it is. this is a term we coined at women's health. it's a new work phenomenon. not just the old workaholics. this is about work creeping into every aspect of your life. and the twist is that you can get hooked on a very behavior that's burning you out. so it's sort of a vicious cycle. >> and ben, you say this is practically lethal. you say it's a wake-up call for all of us. >> it's harmful to our physical health, our emotional health, to our relationships. it's really something that is fraying many of our social ties throughout our country. >> so obviously people are home wondering, do they have this disorder or condition. you created a survey, sasha and people can take the quiz, and there are varying degrees of ccd. >> absolutely. now, everyone who takes the quiz on our website is able to see where they fall. because you're right. a lot of people are sort of like, do i have it, do i not. chances are if you're a hard worker you probably do. i know you guys all took the quiz. and you all fell within our militants middle category. that is our warning category. >> failed. >> so you're not full-blown ccd. but i know willie you in particular were kind of up there. so your job is sort of starting to take over your life so you want to take some steps back. >> but can you succeed without a little bit of this or a lot of ccd? it seems to me if you want to make it in this world, you've got to put in, you know what do they say, 110%? >> i think it's about balance. you know, you have to live your values in some ways. yes, we have to work hard in order to do well. but it's also important to have boundaries. so, for example, at the end of a workday, if i need to do patient notes, i will leave an alarm so i know when it's time to leave to go home, so that i can be with my kids. >> just to give an idea of some of the questions and areas we struggled with. at any one moment, i'm on the phone, checking my in box, updating my to do list, instant messaging et cetera. also we struggle with, i feel guilty if i don't reply to work e-mail asap. the question is sasha how do we start scaling back? you say the key is to start small. >> start small. schedule a workout class. schedule a dinner with a friend and then stick to it. here is the mantra, do not cancel. repeat that in your head. at work, you can start small. we started a lean into lunch initiative at "women's health." everyone takes half an hour maybe more, and gets out there. does not eat at their desk. >> so ben, this is good in theory but if i get an e-mail from work and there is an expectation i'm going to reply to get business done, how do i not send that e. nail? >> it's a question of what is truly an emergency. i think because we think we have access all of the time that we think that everything is an emergency. take a beat and say, is this really an emergency?
