this morning's campaign 2012 report, some key figures in newt gingrich's report have left. >> he may be done altogether. >> g.o.p. presidential contender mitt romney is breaking away from campaign tradition. >> reporter: newt gingrich is scrambling to get his presidential bid back on track. thursday, his entire team of senior staffers abruptly quit citing differences over the campaign. in a statement to cbs news, gingrich's former spokesman rick tyler said there was a path to victory. newt had a different path. when that happens, the people who work for the campaign have to leave. gingrich's national campaign cochair has moved over to tim pawlenty's camp and there's speculation other former staffers could join texas governor rick perry who is reportedly reconsidering a run for the white house. despite the major blow, the former house speaker is pushing forward. giving a speech in california sunday night. on his facebook page, he wrote i am committed to running the substantive solutions oriented campaign i set out to run earlier this spring. while gingrich tries to put a new campaign team together, g.o.p. front-runner mitt romney is breaking with a campaign trail tradition. on thursday, he announced he would not be participating in any of the so-called straw polls. the popularity contests are considered a key test in early voting states. the former massachusetts governor spent more than a million dollars to win the g.o.p. straw poll in iowa four years ago. but in a statement his campaign manager said this time, we will focus our energies and resources on winning primaries and caucuses. romney's advisors have pledged a more disciplined campaign this time around. >> the obama economy is not doing well. >> focused on winning the nomination with an economic message that's in touch with the republican faithful. joel brown, cbs news, washington. in local news, a critic of d.c.'s mayor says he is ready to pull vincent gray out of office. frederick butler says he wants the embattled mayor recalled. the campaign strategist launched a web site saying the mayor has turned its back on the low income residents who elected him. butler says he will file a notice of intent to recall gray on january 2nd. jim graham's former chief of staff is facing 14 months in prison. for the first time, we're getting a look at the surveillance video that got him in trouble. the fbi tape shows ted loza taking payoffs from a cab company owner. he took bribes to influence legislation when it comes to the taxicab industry. in this case, loza took another $500 in cash after accepting early bribes. >> this is for you. thank you very much. >> you know, i need it. that's why i take it. >> this is for graham. >> he gives loza an envelope stuffed with $2600 intended for council member jim graham. graham refused to take the money but he's being criticized for failing to report the attempted bribe. loza is expected to be sentenced at the end of the month. >> it is another sleepless night for a family in montgomery as they search for a missing loved one. >> we can't rest obviously until we know where he is at or what could have happened. >> 31-year-old romero has been missing since april. his family says his car is parked at his gaithersburg and all of his belongings are there. but he's nowhere to be found. they're pleading for his safe return. >> if, by chance, he's watching this, we want you to know that we love you. we miss you. if someone is holding him, please let him go. >> the family says it is out of leads. any information on jaime romero is asked to call the police. tips can remain anonymous. >> police are searching for two teenagers who they believe may be in danger. 17-year-old adam van alstyne and 16-year-old hope jagger took off together sometime after going to bed wednesday night at their homes in ashburn, virginia. they're believed to be driving a 1999 white honda accord adh4643 or xnc1278. in dale city, neighbors are furious that a judge has released a man accused of cutting off the head of his mother's cat. >> robert mcgwire has a long rap sheet including abductions of sex offense, assault and impersonating a police officer. but neighbors say when he beheaded the family cat, it terrified them. i think -- he should be in jail. >> he would do that to a cat. the family cat. what do you think he would do? >> mcgwire allegedly admitted to police he was high on cocaine and alcohol and had slashed his head for attention. investigators say he told them it was from the scratches from the cat trying to save its life. a massive wildfire in eastern arizona is now 5% contained. the flames are the second largest in state history, has burned through hundreds of thousands of acres. for nearly two weeks now, as higher. dow stands at 12,124. added 75 points. a nice, solid rally yesterday! the nasdaq and s&p 500 were both up 9 points. falling home prices are shrinking the equity americans have in their homes. the federal reserve says on average, homeowner equity has plunged from 61% ten years ago to just 38% this year. the report also shows americans overall net worth grew 1.6% last quarter. mostly because of stock market gains. most people can't take advantage of them because they can't meet the bank's tougher lending requirements. those who could afford to refinance did so last year when rates hit their lowest levels in decades. the average rate on a 30 rate fell to 4.9% from 4.55%. the rate for a 15 slipped to 3.68%, both the lowest levels of the year. can you believe it? we're almost at degrees. that was once i turned the engine on sitting in the giant parking lot, it was at 107. >> i bet some thermometers got to 110 yesterday. all of the heat radiates off the pavement. the pavement is dark, it absorbs the heat. big storms yesterday afternoon. middleburg, virginia, inch and a quarter hail at 64-mile-per- hour winds. maryland there, just very impressive. even bridgewater had some sprinkle at this point out there with temperatures which are mostly in the 70s. still warm and muggy. but a little less warm and muggy than yesterday. sun is up at about 5:43. your day planner, 8:00 especially into the evening. 8:00, 84 degrees. highs today only in the low 90s which is still about 10 degrees above where we should be. about four or five days of spring and went straight to summer. satellite and radar from last night. these were the big storms with severe warnings in northern virginia. they moved across parts of maryland and quickly into new jersey. back toward culpepper, another batch of storms that moved across the district and areas south and southwest and then by 2:00, yet another cluster of storms which have been coming across the region and this morning, things are really quieting down. we do have some light sprinkles left here off to the north and east. southeast of 95 and in the bay. but things are really weakening very, very quickly. some of this isn't even real. you may see a few light sprinkles there. out in the bay approaching the lower eastern shore, about the heaviest thing we're seeing here over some of the marsh areas north and west of wingate. things are quieting down rather quickly. temperatures are running in the mid-70s south in fredericksburg and pax river. gaithersburg and winchester, have fallen into the upper 60s. culpepper at 72 degrees. with a little bit more tolerable 76. documents yesterday were in the mid-70s. upper 60s now. that's a sign things are getting a tad more comfortable. while things will be relatively quiet at 8:00, we'll get through the middle of the day. we may start to see a shower pop out toward harrisonburg. then in the afternoon, you see a little bit of activity. a few green specks here and there. not as much today. now, tonight, we'll watch some storms potentially coming in. here's 3:00 during the overnight period. tomorrow, most of us are ok. look during the day. even by noon, we're starting to bubble up some showers and storms. could be a semiactive afternoon in spots with maybe the heaviest stuff into pennsylvania. then with this front coming through tomorrow night. it will start to clear things out. by sunday, we still have a chance of a storm. sunday is the less active of the weekend days weatherwise. high temperatures today in the low 90s. maybe in the 80s across the shore. today, 92. tomorrow, 88. scattered showers and storms. sunday, 88. fewer storms on sunday. if you're going to the shore this weekend. that looks pretty good as well. water temperature in the inland, 66. look at the ocean temps getting down into the 70s. 86 sunday with some showers and storms more likely saturday than sunday and monday, look at that. looks great. with a high temperature around 80 degrees. our seven-day forecast, monday, 80. tuesday, flag day looks nice as well. 82. we'll turn back up to 87 thursday and we could see afternoon storms. at least a couple of nice days early next week. it is time for christine and the latest time -- for chris sneed and the latest timesaver traffic. we'll move the cameras on over to the beltway in maryland. over toward 270, colesville road, everything looks great. let's head over to virginia now. 66 eastbound through fairfax to the beltway. things are nice and quiet. no problems there. i'm going to flip the camera over to 95 northbound to lorton to the mixing bowl area. you got no problems looking there right now. we'll take a look at 50 in maryland at the beach drive coming up. mike, over to you. thank you, chris. every 40 seconds in the united states, someone has a stroke. it is sometimes called a brain attack. recovery as you may have heard, can take months or years but it is possible in this morning's health alert, anita brikman profiles a young stroke survivor who refused to give up. she has information on a local study that could help others just like her. >> my whole right side was affected. >> the fact that christine arnold and i are even having this conversation is a testament to how far she's come. chrissy has a blood clotting disorder that triggered a massive stroke four years ago when she was just 30 years old. at first, she couldn't speak or hardly move the right side of her body. but after six months of inpatient therapy here at the national rehabilitation hospital, she regained motor skills one by one. >> one of those people that, i'm a fighter. >> a fighter who isn't afraid to try something new. since christy's right foot would lag behind when she tried to walk, a common condition called foot drop, she wore this. it has foot sensor inside her shoe and a cuff with electrodes that fits around her leg. >> part of the brain that tells the body to pick up the foot is in some way damaged so the device then replaces that signal from the brain. it gives them signals directly to the nerve to activate the muscles to pick the foot up. >> the purpose of the study is to compare this newer device to this, an ankle foote arthosis, it supports the foot but it can be cumbersome. >> difficult in some cases to fit into people's shoes. >> physical therapist kathy brady hopes the research reveals more success like christie's. after using the nest l300 for about a year, she no longer needs it to walk. she taped our interview before leaving with her husband, chris, to
