we know 200 people were evacuated and 84 people including carol glover, the one fatality, were transported to the hospital. more than an hour elapsed between the first call coming from l'enfant plaza to the victim being transported, but cpr was administered to carol glover, a passenger at that time. >> it just takes a while. >> i'm more concerned about i just heard this morning on the media that radios are not working down in the tunnels. >> there has been a lot of discussion about if the firefighters could hear amongst themselves and get upstairs and what was the state of the equipment. >> reporter: in washington, surae chinn, wusa9. >> as of now half a dozen people plan to sue metro tomorrow over the tragedy of that trapped and smoke filled train. >> they allege negligence and complain metro's evacuation plans, if it had any, were abject failures. bruce leshan is live at l'enfant plaza with the latest on that. >> reporter: smoke is actually fairly common in the metro tunnels and the agency is supposed to have a plan to get people out, but the d.c. lawyer who is filing this lawsuit tomorrow says instead of a plan these passengers were left fighting for air in the midst of chaos. >> i just didn't see any way that we were going to get out of there because the smoke was encapsulating and all you could see out the windows was darkness. >> reporter: melbert ridge had all but given up texting his mother and children a final good-bye. >> i told my mother i loved being her son and i told my kids i loved being their dad. >> again, customers, please remain calm. we're about to move back to the platform. >> reporter: his story of terror underground and desperate effort to get out is supplemented by a new video. >> i understand there's smoke on the train. >> the train won't move until the train that's already in the plaza gets out. the train jumps as he makes an effort to pull it back there but doesn't go anywhere. >> reporter: rich says several metro transit police were in his car yelling into their radios trying to get another train to move out of l'enfant plaza so the trapped train could move in. >> get the train off. >> u.s. j constantly screaming at command trying to turn to the fifth channel -- just constantly screaming at command trying to turn to the fifth channel or this channel trying to get that train out. >> reporter: rich said metro was negligent leaving the passengers trapped like rats in smoke. >> looking at the chaos monday it seems as if they don't have a protocol in place. >> reporter: that lawyer is a former assistant general manager of metro. she has already settled a case against the agency in the deaths of general david worely and his wife ann. they were two of the people who were killed in 2009 in a metro crash. tonight a woodbridge man is behind bars charged with killing his stepfather. investigators say 29-year-old brian hernandez grabbed a knife from the kitchen, walked into the living room and stabbed morrow rodriguez. the suspect's mother witnessed the whole thing and called police. medics rushed the victim to the hospital where he later died. authorities are trying to figure out what sparked the violence. a followup to our report last night on the montgomery county couple under investigation for child neglect because they let their kids walk around their neighborhood on their own unaccompanied. there is a firestorm of reaction tonight. the meitiv children are 10 years old and 6 years old their parents let them walk together up to a mile from their home unaccompanied by an adult. andrea mccarren is live with a look at when you are saying -- what you are saying about all this on social media. >> the vast majority of people posting appear to support the parents. many recalled their own childhoods where, of course, kids played outside until nightfall when it was time to come in for dinner. >> we're not the only people who think that it's not outrageous. >> reporter: danielle and in a tasha meitiv believe child protective services is overstepping its bounds investigating them for child neglect because they allow their 10-year-old son and 6- year-old daughter to walk together around their neighborhood unaccompanied by an adult. >> they were trying to dig for basically something to pin the case on us. >> reporter: on social media hundreds of you agreed. margaret bell posted, "they need to spend time on real neglect cases. that is why young kids end up dead, as they are investigated." has it really come to this wondered lawrence albert on facebook? children can't walk around in their own neighborhoods anymore. if so, things are really out of control somewhere. added steve simon, "by today's standards my folks would be bonnie and clyde." several people did raise concerns for the children's safety and defended cps. donna lee duff wrote, "remember the lyons sisters? god rest their souls." added caroline friedly, " cps has such a tough job. they never get thanked for all the kids they save, only berated for the ones that slip through the cracks." >> most sex crimes are not with strangers. >> reporter: we showed the meitivs the online maryland sex offender registry. it revealed 12 registered sex offenders living or working within 1/2-mile of the family's home. expand that to a mile and there are 28. >> about 1/4 of them are charged with misdemeanor crimes like possession of pornography. so these are not violent offenders. >> montgomery county police told me their officers are obligated to check out complaints and a spokeswoman at child protective services this afternoon said the agency had nothing to add. cps is meeting with the family on tuesday. we will keep you posted. >> lot of reaction. thank you. protesters took to the streets this morning in d.c. in the middle of rush hour as part of the d.c. ferguson group. the march started at 7:00 at mount vernon square in honor of what would have been dr. king king, jr.'s 80 -- doctor martin luther king, jr.'s 86th birthday. they were protesting the militarization of police, the nonindictments of police officers of the unarmed black men in new york and missouri and what they say is d.c.'s version of the stop and frisk. >> it shouldn't be business as usual when we have an epidemic of systemic racism targeted toward black and brown communities. we're not going to let it be business as usual. >> the group is also trying to get 20,000 signatures on their anti-jump out petition by april. angry, angry hippo, coming up see what happens when a boat load of tourists and a protective hippo cross paths. >> but first a tearful good-bye in france for the victims of last week's deadly attack on a satirical newspaper a investigators continue the hunt for a terror suspect linked to those killings. >> i'm meterologists topper shutt, a cold night but average night. this is about average for january. right now 37 in d.c., 30 in boston. we'll come back, talk about not the people of france are paying their lasting ares to more of -- last respects to more of the cartoonists killed in last week's terrorist attacks. >> with the aid of a translator we hear from one of the victim's daughters, elsa. translator: his daughter elsa says they've killed a man but not their ideas. we will continue to defend the principals of charlie hebdo. >> meanwhile in pakistan protesters hit the streets to condemn charlie hebdo's use of images of the prophet muhammad. one banner reads the sketchmakers must be hanged immediately and called the publication of those images an act of terror. today lawmakers in pakistan passed a resolution condemning those images. two people were lhkilled during a belgian police counterterrorism operation. a third suspect was seriously wounded by police during the raid. investigators are talking to several others who were detained. it is believed the suspects returned to country after fighting in syria. belgium has seen a significant rise in ra the american rock climbers who make history this week are telling their story today. >> kevin jorgeson and tommy caldwell conquered what has long been considered the world's most difficult climb. yosemite's dawn wall at el capitan. the men did what is called free climb which means they only used their hands and feet to scale the 3,000 feet summit, although they had ropes in case they slipped. the 19 day trek really took a toll on the men both mentally and physically. >> my hands are beat. i wake up every morning and i have to take 800 milligrams of ibuprofen just to brush my teeth. >> one wonders why you would go back again, but they do plan to go back. in fact, they plan to return to el capitan to remove safety ropes they installed along that 3,000-foot climb. >> how would you even do that? all right. if scaling el capitan doesn't get the adrenaline pumping, how about a speedboat ride through a herd of angry hippos in zambia. this tour operator captured this unbelievable footage of a hippo launching itself from the water right at the speedboat. the driver mashed the gas pedal to pull away from angry hippo there, but you can see that's a close call. he suspects the hippo got angry because of a baby hippo nearby. maybe that's a mama hippo. there you go. >> don't mess with the mama. they'll get you. >> they tell you hippos are the most dangerous animal in the jungle. >> now we see. >> they could swim and also run faster than you think. >> and apparently they're moody. >> what are you saying?
