shoot-out on the d.c./maryland line has two people injured including a montgomery county police officer. the shooting happened near eastern and georgia avenues. tracee wilkins joins us with more on what happened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. eastern's right behind me. we're actually here at 13th and eastern. this is the montgomery county/d.c. line. d.c. actually owns some of the sidewalk portion of where this happened, while montgomery county maintains the roadway and some of the businesses here. let me show you what it looked like earlier. they're going to have to split the investigation now. there were calls for shots fired coming from d.c. and montgomery county. montgomery county police arrived on the scene first to find a man who was shooting a handgun in the air, according to police, and then at some point, fired those shots at the police officers who were responding according to those officers. one of the officers actually suffered an injury in this gun exchange. but police are not confirming that he was actually shot. they do say that his hand was injured at some point. well, the gunman was shot and has been transported to the hospital. he's been critically injured. the police officers who responded, even the one who suffered a minor injury, has been checked and released from the hospital at this point. now internal affairs, they're going to have to investigate this on the montgomery county side since those are the officers who fired their guns. d.c. will be handling the overall criminal investigation, working to figure out exactly why this man was here firing his gun. this all happened around 1:00 a.m., and the investigation is continuing. i'm tracee wilkins, live this morning. back to you all in the studio. >> thank you. on the making your way to germantown, 54 miles per hour southbound. no issues in gaithersburg. clear through rockville. here, 67 miles per hour. if you're connecting to the spur and connecting to the beltway, no issues. here's a live look at the beltway right now. travel speeds, if you're taking the beltway, from i-270 on the inner loop, making your way to i-95, you're at 59 miles per hour. only taking ten minutes to make that trip, and the rails are open with no reported delays so far on the metro, marc, or vre. back to you. >> thanks. a developing story in calvert county. a newborn baby was found dead inside the trunk of a car. the baby was found near the intersection of sixes road and hallowing point road in prince frederick. police tell news4 someone was cleaning the trunk when nay found the baby. it's not clear if the person who found the child is related to the baby. police are calling this a homicide. >> our hearts go out to the family that located this infant in the trunk of this vehicle. this is heart wrenching for our community and for law enforcement. >> police are now interviewing relative of the person who found the baby. we are working to learn more about a baby that died at an unlicensed daycare center in bristow in prince william county, virginia. police tell news4 the 3-month-old girl was playing with other children when she stopped breathing. she was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. police tell us there are no signs of foul play. but the medical examiner's office is expected to do an autopsy to determine why the girl died. today president obama will talk about the economy in richmond. he's scheduled to speak at a rolls royce aircraft parts plant in prince george. the factory employs more than 100, and construction on a second phase of the plant could begin this year. a public/private research center is also being built near the facility in prince george. the president's speech will come a few hours after the labor department releases its february jobs report. many economists expect the unemployment rate to remain at 8.3%. they still believe the economy added more than 200,000 jobs last month. the unemployment rate has fallen five consecutive months. five after the hour. the fed's trying to figure out if a number of suspicious letters with white powder are connected. so far the letters have shown up at at least -- in at least five other states. and three letters were mailed to d.c. addresses just yesterday. one letter was found at the epa building on constitution avenue. another at emmett and bowen elementary school in southwest, and a chef at viviana restaurant on new york avenue opened a letter with white powder in it. the letters were being sent from dallas and usually have the words "al qaeda" and "fbi." none of the substances in any of the letters has been harmful. 5:05. 50 degrees. the film is supposed to draw attention to atrocities of an african warlord. coming up, why questions st. mary's, the northern neck and across the president obama. extreme southern prince william county, from near dumfries toward quantico and farther south to near fredericksburg getting lingering sprinkles there. temperatures right now from mt. rainier to clinton, georgetown, arlington, oakton, and gaithersburg are in the 40s to near 50 degrees. it's near freezing out of the mountains now. to help recover from the 2010 gulf oil spill. the senate approved a measure that will send most of the fines stemming from the disaster to the five gulf states. bp could be fined more than $2 billion under the clean water act if it's found grossly negligent in connection with that oil spill. right now, gas prices are up about 27 cents a gallon from a month ago. and mitt romney says president obama is partially to blame for that spike. he accuses the president of contributing to rising gas prices by slowing the licensing and permitting of offshore and onshore drilling. the former massachusetts governor says he'll accelerate drilling permits and approve the keystone pipeline which would bring oil from canada to the u.s. newt gingrich is counting on a good showing in tuesday's alabama and mississippi primaries to keep his white house hopes alive. aides say he needs to win the contests just to stay in the race. gingrich has canceled plans to campaign in kansas this weekend so he can focus on the south. kansas holds its caucuses saturday. gingrich's main competition is rick santorum. he's telling voters that he is the true conservative candidate and the best to challenge president obama in november. we're learning more about the deal overnight to save greece from bankruptcy and avoid an economic crisis in europe. greece secured a deal to accept steep losses on their bonds. the plan will give the country a second bailouts and help slash its -- bailout and help slash its debt by $140 million. if the swap failed, greece would have faced defaulting on its debt in two weeks. that news sent stock markets up around the world. right now european stocks are up. asian markets also posted big gains today. right now u.s. futures are down. this morning investigators are trying to figure out why a man opened fire inside a psychiatric hospital on the university of pittsburgh campus. police say the man armed with sam two semi automatic guns started shotgun yesterday afternoon. two people died including the suspect. seven others were hurt. pennsylvania's governor says he supports the decision to fire joe paterno for his role in the penn state sex abuse scandal. governor corbett says the former football coach should have followed up on the child molestation accusations against jerry sandusky. paterno reported an alleged attack inside the locker rooms in 2002 to university officials. before he was fired, paterno said he wished he had done more. he died of lung cancer in january at the age of 85. jerry sandusky charged with sexually abusing at least ten boys over a 15-year period. he denies the allegations. until this week you've likely never heard of kony 2012. after nearly 50 million views on youtube, the movement has drawn worldwide attention. there's a new focus on the group behind the film, invisible children. some critics say the group isn't being forthcoming financially. they say not enough of the millions the group has raise sudden going to actual programs in africa. and charity investigators gives the site only two out of four stars for accountability and transparency. the nonprofit is now responding to critics. the group says it has donated more than 1/3 of its funds to programs in central africa. the rest goes to awareness programs, management, media development, and fundraising. invisible children claims the accountability rating is the result of having only four members on its board of directors. experts say awareness is good, but the problems in uganda are complex, without a simple solution. just as with any other charity, do your diligent research before decide figure it's something you'd like to contribute to. some of syria's top officials announced they're defecting from president assad's regime. one of the leaders includes the deputy oil minister who said in the internet video he could no longer stand by while government forces step up attacks on generals. four generals left according to forces. the it's still 58 there. it's going to be turning chillier throughout the day. here's the day planner for this friday. sunrise at 6:28. sun breaking out by 9:00. we'll have winds gusting to around 15 to 20 miles per hour from time to time throughout the morning hours. then that wind should settle this afternoon. lots of sunshine. temperatures dropping back, though, from near 60 early afternoon to >> thank you. handicapped drivers will find an additional 1,100 red-topped meters throughout the district the next few weeks. that means 9% of all metered spaces in d.c. will be reserved for people with disabilities. the d.c. department of transportation says the spots are being added in areas with a high demand for parking. only vehicles with a valid placard or license plate can park at those red-topped meters. the fine for breaking the law is $250. a rhode island family pretty upset after being kicked off their flight because of a temper tantrum. the view family was boarding their jetblue flight from the turks and caicos to boston whether their 2-year-old, gnatsly, started throwing a temper tantrum. the family got her under control, but the pilot announced he was turning the plane around and going back -- no. they removed the family because he says the toddler was unruly. jetblue officials said the family was not following instructions so they were removed for the safety of experts say don't let pain at the pump affect your vacation plans. experts say despite rising prices for airline tickets, there are still great deals out there. they suggest that you find package have to raise to a fuel surcharge may be $20 a cabin or $30 a cabin. it's almost like it can be spread out over a larger ship. >> experts are also advising travelers to find airlines' central hubs
