here in the yard and were taken to the hospital where david died. they say he's 15 years old, a 10th grader in high school and they don't know why anyone would want to do this. >> he never had a chance to do anything. he never had a chance to be himself. i pray to god that he made peace with god so that i can see him again. >> reporter: durham police say they are asking anyone with information about what happened here to call crimestoppers. as for this story, cbs north carolina will follow it. mario boone is going to have more starting on the news at 5:00 including what the inside of that house looks like after the shooting. all of that is coming up on cbs north carolina. for now reporting live in durham, i'm emma wright, cbs north carolina. we are also keeping an eye on a building explosion that injured nine firefighters in seattle, washington, early this firefighters were responding to a natural gas leak near the greenwood neighborhood overnight. 30 minutes later, a massive explosion leveled a restaurant, a coffee shop, and grocery store. the force of that explosion could be felt from blocks away. the injured firefighters are being treated for burns, cuts, and abrasions. garner police tell us no kids were on the school bus that crashed this morning at garner road. it ran off the road and took out tree branches near highway 50. one person had to be treated for minor injuries, though. still ahead, a baltimore police officer caught on camera attacking a student less than a week ago is now charged. we'll have more on this case against him. also, finally home after nearly a year in iraq. members of the 82nd airborne get to hug their loved ones after returning to fort bragg. year again. are you prepared? we're going to go inside of a local school to see how your kids train for the possibility of dangerous weather. first, though, no cloudy, gray skies here. the raleigh skyline. right now, let's turn it over to storm team meteorologist alyssa corfont. it is a beautiful day. >> it is beautiful. airport. i stepped outside for my break and man is it nice to enjoy the fresh air. i took my dog for an extra long walk. 73 degrees. elsewhere in durham, 75. fayetteville, you art 74. clinton at 74 while goldsboro, you are at 73 degrees. this is something i did notice around the block this morning. it is a bit breezy at times. sustained winds with 17 miles per hour in fayetteville. i don't think these will be a nuisance but something you will notice as you are outside. at 3:00, we'll start to see the temperatures drop. maybe you are are firing up the grill and enjoying the neighborhood. midnight tonight, 63. we'll eventually fall into the mid-50s close to daybreak on our thursday. i will let you know how long these warm temperatures last, though, coming up in your complete storm team forecast. plus? we are liking that weather for sure. students throughout the triangle are participating in tornado drills today as part of severe weather preparedness week. some of the drills were held at east garner elementary school. customerin' ketchell got -- kristin ketchell got a look at the drills. >> reporter: the peak of the weather systems is right around the corner so there was a tornado drill. >> i think the most important part is about just protecting yourself and making sure that you stay safe. >> reporter: each year, the national weather service encourages schools, businesses, to take action when severe weather strikes. since much of the area already experienced severe weather this season, it's something to be taken seriously. >> the weather we had at the end of february should serve as a reminder that we are already in the midst of the traditional severe weather season. >> reporter: the drill was drooped waft on noaa weather raid -- broadcast on noaa weather radio at 9:30 wednesday morning. students and faculty at east garner elementary school quickly sprang into action. >> lie down. lie down. >> reporter: the students promptly lined the hallways of the school covering their heads. >> you get on your knees and you cover your head and make sure that your hands are on the back of your head. then you put your head down and make sure that you are close to the wall because the walls are sturdy. >> reporter: they waited patiently until the drill ended then discussed what they learned. >> i learned about how you need to cover your head and protect your front organs because that's the most important part >> reporter: the statewide tornado drill is a yearly event that takes place during severe weather preparedness week in march. it gives these students and people elsewhere a chance to practice life-saving skills in case the tornado strikes. in garner, i'm storm team meteorologist kristin ketchell, cbs north carolina. just a day after bernie sanders stunned hillary clinton with a primary win in michigan, the democratic candidate for president will face his rival once again in a debate for the second time this week. now, in addition to michigan, voters in mississippi, idaho, and hawaii also went to the polls. in a surprising turnch events, carly fiorina threw her support behind ted cruz as donald trump picks up even more delegates. here's craig boswell with more. >> reporter: bernie sanders regained momentum last night picking up a big win in michigan's primary contest over rival hillary clinton. opportunity to thank the people of michigan. you repudiate the polls that had us down -- repudiated the days ago. shouldn't be -- running for delivering insults. it should be about delivering results to the american people! [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: despite efforts by some in the republican establishment to derail donald trump's campaign, trump continues to extend his lead, picking up even more victories last night. >> there's only one person who did well tonight, donald trump, i will tell you. >> reporter: the billionaire front-runner defeated his rivals in mississippi, michigan, mississippi and hawaii. craig boswell, cbs, north carolina. guess who's back in the triangle. donald trump is back in our state today, this time making an appearance in fayetteville. he with ill attend an event at the crown coliseum this rodgers joins us live with the look ahead. nate, good afternoon. >> reporter: hey, guys. as you can see behind me, folks are already in line here, about a hundred or so people in line waiting to get inside. the first guy arrived told me he drove from georgia and got here around 4:00 this morning. donald trump is the first presidential candidate to make a stop in fayetteville this election season. the campaign set up nearly two weeks ago and 300 local volunteers have signed up to work. alice was number 10 in line for today's rally. she traveled from myrtle beach and is battling cancer. in last month, she's called nearly 6,000 people on trump's bee half. >> i like -- on trump's behalf. >> i like his personality. i mean, he tells it like it is. he won't hold back. when he has something to say, he says it, and he does it. >> reporter: here's the schedule for today. mr. trump will speak at a fox news town hall at the crown arena. doors open at 2:00. doors open for the rally, though, here at the crown complex at 4:00. that event begins at 7:00. now, no sign of protesters out here yet. the sheriff's office confirms they did issue one permit for a group of 30 or so folks to demonstrate outside of the crown. of course they anticipate more folks protesting. another reminder. arrive early even if you have a ticket to the event. it is first come first serve. that's the latest here. i'm nate rodgers, reporting. hillary clinton has a busy day in the triangle. she's making two campaign stocks at local high schools. the first is scheduled at durham at hill site high school tomorrow at 1:350 the doors 0p and the event starts at 3:50. home at last. paratroopers with the 82nd deployment in iraq to the arms of friends and family. >> reporter: an emotional homecoming here at fort bragg where families of over 150 paratroopers saw their loved several months. waiting an hour on the tarmac didn't seem very long compared to waiting several months. >> six months. >> forever. >> forever. >> i'm really excited. it's been a while. >> reporter: families of paratroopers from the 82nd airborne division were ready to welcome home the loved ones. >> oh, it's going to be awesome. it's like another honeymoon. fantastic. >> reporter: the plane landed, a brief ceremony and then the reunion. >> it's been nine months. good to see them. >> it will be nice. >> reporter: husbands and wives, fathers, daughters, sons and mothers reunited. have breakfast. menu? >> probably ihop maybe. >> reporter: they say they'll catch up, spend time together ones home safe. >> i am thrilled. i'm happy, excited, and so proud of him and everything he does for our country and our family. >> reporter: now this is the last group of the 82nd airborne division to be redeployed from iraq. army officials say it marks the end of a successful deployment. news. great to see that, david. thanks so much. a charlotte teacher learns her punishment after admitting to having sex of the student. why the parent of that teen is not happy. for former thanks for staying with us. a former teacher who admitted to having sex with a student will avoid jail. she had an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year- old. how theton must surrender her teaching license and instead serve two years of probation. the student's mother is outraged calling the sentence too light. an officer-involved death is being investigated. the incident revolves around a high-speed chase between wilson and johnson counties. investigators say after the pursuit ended in a crash, alex thompson got out and ran towards an officer ignoring commands to stop. the officer used a stun gun to subdue the man who later died at the hospital. a baltimore school police officer caught slapping and been charged with second degree assault and child abuse. anthony spence posted bond this morning after being charged on tuesday. disturbing information about the zika virus. experts say sexual transmission of the virus is more common than previously thought with brazil considered the hot zone for the virus, it is spread to other countries as well, including central america and puerto rico. there's been an increase in reports of neurological conditions that could affect anyone, not just pregnant women. it can cause weakness, paralysis, and even death. at least five cases of the zika virus have been reported in north carolina involving patients who have traveled abroad. the big question of the day is, what are you going to do outside because it's so gorgeous. i don't care what you are doing, you morning commute on thursday could take a bit longer. along the 5 corridor, we'll start in the upper 70s. 81 in goldsboro and clinton. here around the triangle, durham looking at a high of 78. roxboro and south hill, you should be around 76. this is a light southwesterly breeze. as we head into the coming days tomorrow, high of 80. tomorrow, our record high is actually right around 81 degrees. that record could easily fall throughout the afternoon. chance for a shower or two and don't forget we spring ahead as we head into the weekend. that means the sun is going to stay up later and later, but we do lose an hour of sleep over the weekend. i don't like to broadcast that. chance for a few showers monday and tuesday. >> it takes a good two weeks to recover from the loss of an hour. >> i feel across our state and the nation. in philadelphia, atv and dirt bike riders have quickly become a public nuisance. police spend countless hours dealing with people who race officers say they under a difficult position because they can't chase them. >> if we chase them, then people say, hey, you chase them and create an accident and kill someone. some innocent person who's out there traveling, then you are wrong. if you don't chase them and they continue to whip in and out of traffic and, you know, then you are not doing your job. >> atv riders say they within the do it if there were safer, better places to ride. north carolina is on the way to leading the industry in using drones safely. companies like amazon want to use drones to deliver packages within 30 minutes or so. locally,
