plaquers left on the scene. look at the scene from earlier today. a terrible story. we understand, we were told by the chief of police is a group from a home here. a group home for special needs residents had left their house just up the block and were walking down to a basketball court. they were going to play some basketball. they came across two people in a car. for some reason or another, words were exchanged. according to prince george's county chief of police, one of the residents of the group home doesn't respond real well. and someone in car pulls out a gun. opens fire. and hits that man in his 20's. that man runs just a little ways before he drops to the ground. police say, this is an important note. someone who was with the shooter was apparently horrified by what happened. got out of the shooter's car. actually ran to the victim to and made comments that were heard in the neighborhood about how horrified that person was by the shooting. police want that person to come forward. that person likely faces no criminal charges but holds the information they knead to make an arrest. again, a terrible kraime out here. we will be out here back at 5:00 with more information. police asking the community for help. landover hills, brad bell, abc7 news. jonathan: thanks. two dead on the ucla campus in los angeles, california. michelle: reports coming in a little before 1:00 our time. students put on lockdown. hours later we learn it's a murder-suicide. at times we saw police mapping out the area and rushing around the buildings there. mike carter-conneen is at the "live desk" with more. mike: the los angeles police chief says two men are dead. there is mo evidence that any other suspects are outstanding. the two men were not identified. and police have not said students or staff members. but the shooting happened in a small office in an engineering building there on campus. police found a gun along with what might be a suicide note. meanwhile, officers methodically moved buildings at times with the weapons drawn escorting everyone away from the crime scene. the hands raised in the air. >> we are in the process of releasing students from lockdown. but we need to do so in an orderly fashion. and in a way that allows us to make sure there are no other participants. at that point this investigation will be handed over to robbery homicide division of los angeles police department. mike: the white house says president obama was briefed on the shooting. reported around 10:00 a.m. local time. 1:00 p.m. our time. everyone on campus was told to shelter-in-place in the lockdown. police swarmed the campus. 419 acres across on the westside of l.a. busy city. this cam than 43,000 students and it's a time of great stress there with this being the week before final exams. we will continue to monitor developments out of l.a. and bring you updates when we get new information. reporting live in the newsroom, mike carter-conneen, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you for that. stay with abc7 for updates. even when you have to step away from the tv you can log on to wjla.com/text to sign up for the break news text alerts. you will get the updates sent straight to your phone from the newsroom when something breaks. michelle: back here closer to home, 24 hours ago students at prince william county elementary school had to shelter in place. alison: this was because of a bear walk on to the school grounds. look at this picture here. that was sent to abc7 news this morning. teacher took that. at another school in gainesville. now we are getting video. a twitter user posted this video online. look at that. the bear spotted at piedmont plaza in gainesville. no report of actual encounters with the humans at this point. we will there are any more of the sightings today. jonathan: thanks. the man who ran the silver diner killing a customer last month faces new criminal charges. he is facing second-degree murder. tom roussey is in tysons corner with more on the story. tom? tom: jonathan, the reason he wasn't charged prior to this, police were waiting for him to get out of jail. it's been four weeks to the day since it happened at the tysons silver diner. if you look at the entrance you can't tell anything happened. if you look closer you can see a few marks left over. but man it looks better than four weeks ago today. here is video from that day. a wednesday. during the busy time of lunchtime rush here at the silver diner. police say he rammed his s.u.v. repeatedly into that entrance and then hi -- he wouldn't let folks try to help him. he doused himself w hummer on fire. he was pulled out of there. he spent weak in that time. in that time one of the three people injured when it happened passed away. so now he is facing second-degree murder charge. charge for destruction of property and a -- alleged arson as well. he was released in the custody of d.c. but he decided not to fight extradition in virginia. so he was taken to the fairfax county jail. reporting live in tysons, i'm tom roussey, abc7 news. michelle: a cloud of controversy surrounding chevy chase high school and the montgomery county public schools. six students who showed up drunk to prom were told they couldn't walk at graduation. the principal made that call. but then reversed the decision. montgomery county reporter kevin lewis was at the commencement ceremony where opinions were mixed. kevin: after a year of deadly alcohol-related crashes and underage drinking parties partin montgomery county, the principal here wanted to ensure her students were kept safe at prom. so anyone who planned to attend senior prom had to sign this contract, which included a clause planning students from bringing drugs or alcohol or being you remembered the influence. the contract stated violators would not walk at today's graduation. in the may 6 prom at the omni hotel in woodly park, six seniors were found consuming alcohol. the principal kept to her word banning all six students from commencement. the kids and their parents appealed that decision. the petition landed on interim mcps superintendent larry bowers desk. his decision, let the kids walk. he cited policy that bans blanket disciplinary measures. >> we had to sign a contract. it was in black and white. we simply stated if anyone had a question about it. there were e-mails and senior meetings. >> it's her school and she is a principal. it's her jurisdiction so to speak. she took the authority to make the decision. if they didn't want to give her the authorization to make the decision they should have had a discussion prior to her making that announcement. kevin: all new at 5:00, hear why some students say superintendent bowers made the right call. reporting in bethesda, kevin lewis, abc7 news. alison: thank you very much. tonight a woman in new jersey is learning firsthand about the devastating effects of the zika virus. the woman gave birth at a hospital yesterday. and doctors are confirming now her newborn has microcephaly. that is the condition caused by the virus in which a child's brain and head are only partially >> there are often developmental problems and developmental problems can be severe. could be intellectual problems. they could be problems with sight, hearing, movement. alison: so the mother who was visiting the united states contracted the virus while she was in honduras. and there is a potential breakthrough in the fight against the zika virus to tell you about. the brazilion health surveillance agency approved a test to detect the zika virus in 20 minutes. after at least eight months of research this is the first test that quickly detects the disease in brazil. until now patients who suspected they might have the virus had to wait at least some three weeks to get their lab results back. jonathan: pings are now being heart from the egyptair flight that crashed last month killing all 66 people on board. the french company is reporting hearing the pings from the ship they are using to search for the wreckage. they are coming thousands of feet down. some areas is 10,000 feet down. they are coming from black boxes from the plane. once recovered they may help explain what caused the plane to go down. coming up for us at "abc7 news at 4:00" -- the new plan to limit how much salt you eat. how much is too much? alison: a woman is in court after investigators say she fooled stores thinking what she brought in was the real deal. diane cho is in alexandria to explain the alleged scheme. diane? diane: the suspect had a preliminary hearing here in federal court this afternoon. according to investigators, they say she returned nearly 230 designer handbags at t.j. of them were fake. according to the court documents investigators say the suspect praepitcha smatsorabudh was buying legitimate purses from department stores and returning them for refund using the counterfeit bags and then selling the real ones online. she was buying the counterfeit bags from china. investigators searched her apartment in march they found nearly 600 purses. some of them were real. others were fake. >> some of the ripoffs are pretty good at it. they look really good. >> not shocking but just sad. sad that the stores wouldn't be more diligent. diane: a lot of the bags returned were believed to be legitimate bags and adding she sold legitimate ones online that had nothing to do with t.j. maxx. diane cho, abc7 news. jonathan: the real difference? look for, for authenticity? >> each brand has its own way of being authenticated. so first look at the material. and this is a coated canvas. for louis vuitton, they are all hand stitched. so notice manufactured. the font is not right. it's it inside here. >> it's missing the serial code underneath the tag, the made-in label. those are sure signs. look at the quality of it. kimberly: yeah. this pleaded not guilty in court tuesday to felony assault and drugging charges. if convicted he could face up to six years in prison. the judge ordering him to stay away from his alleged victim. >> do you stunning video. brad: the a.t.v. rider is bold, feet in front of the police cruiser. he and his camera-wielding buddy taunt the cops. even as the a hands-free wheelie, officer doesn't take the bait. it is against general orders to pursue or engage for the offenses he is witnessing. the riders laugh and display more than a modest amount of skill but less than solid judgment. because when they post the clip to instagram, they give police all they need. >> well, you can see we have video. kindly provided by his friend of the crime in action. we have the ability to try to track him down based on [bleep] jonathan: not too smart. tonight, the parents of the little boy who ended up in a gorilla den at a zoo in ohio have a message for the public. ready for this? they are telling people stop trying to give us money. the family released a statement saying that the boy is still doing well after his latest checkup. they say that plenty of people reached out to them, offering financial the parents say the money instead should be donated to the cincinnati zoo. michelle: "7 on your side" when health matters. there is a new government plan to limit the amount of salt you eat every day. most people consume 50% more salt than is recommended. so the nation's top health officials set goals to reduce salt in processed and prepared foods. so that means a cut-back in everything from bacon to french fries. >> in terms of what we are doing is creating a situation where the consumer is in control. if the consumer wants to add more sodium, they will do it. what the consumer can't do now is take it out of the product and have real knowledge about it. michelle: the changes could save hundreds of thousands of lives. and billions of dollars in healthcare costs over the next decade. "7 on your side" consumer alert. four companies are selling new vehicles with potentially deadly takata air bag inflators. the report by the democrat the senate commerce committee finds 2016 and 2017 toyota, fiat chrysler, mitsubishis and volkswagens have an inflator prone to rupturing and sending snapnel during wrecks. they are sold legally. takata agreed to recall the troubled inflatorsors in phases by the end of 2016. jonathan: talking about recall. ford expanding its recall by 2 million vehicles in north america. the affected models are 2006, 2011 ford fusions. and lincoln mkz, zephyr and mercury milan. 2007 ford rangers. 2007-2010 lincoln and ford edges. the 2005-2010 ford mustangs are all covered in this recall expansion. you can expect notifications in the mail at any day. and you can find the complete list on the website at wjla.com. as that recall does yourself making an appointment to take your car in to get it checked out. consumer reporter john matarese warns you about a costly surprise that could come with the recall so you don't waste your money. john: more and more air bags added to the takata air bag recall every month. chances someone in your family received a recall notice or will soon. before you bring your car to a d.c. area dealer for free repair i want to explain why you should watch your wallet. scott like millions of drivers received a letter saying his takata air bag could be dangerous and on the list for a free replacement. when he brought his car in -- >> i went to order the parts, because they didn't have it in. but they told me i needed some work on front end specifically, part of the suspension. john: he reluctantly agreed to the extra work. the receipt shows he ended one new axle boot and other things for a grand total of $922. but that wasn't the end of it. a few weeks later when the ne >> they presented me with a recommendation for a lot of other work. $2,000 worth of work. john: $2,000 more after he is just paid $900? here is what you need to know. when you bring your car in for an air bag recall or any recall the dealer will do a safety inspection. they don't want to send you out on highway in a dangerous vehicle. but the recommendations are just recommendations. you don't have to pay. scott decided to take his car to an independent repair shop instead. >> they came out that the other repairs recommended only $300 needed to be done. john: "consumer reports" magazine says some dealership exploit safety recall as marketing hook to sell additional repair work. so it says check the car's handbook to see if a service is really due. if it's really big money get a second opinion. as scott did. we are not accusing any car dealers of ripping anyone off. your car may need brakes or other work. but don't be captured on video. the sea lion pup spotted near a highway on monday. so it was in danger when the officers arrived. they say the pup was alone shivering and tired. it even tried to warm itself next to the officers. police ended up calling in the experts from the california marine mammal center who are now caring for the pup. very cute. all right. tourists at yellowstone national park learned it's best to keep your distance from wildlife. jonathan: but unfortunately one woman had to learn the hard way. jonathan: you can hear the tour guide trying to warn her. before the animal charge. it is a wild animal. witnesses say the woman was shaken up but she walked away unharmed. hopefully it knocked sense her. you are in the wild. don't mess with animals out there. michelle: people go to
