beijing. president obama touched down here last night kicking off a dizzying week of summit meetings in asia. the president coming off those bruising midterm losses is trying to shift his focus to foreign policy. it's just been three years since the obama administration announced it would pivot its focus to asia. then it got distracted by a host of international and domesting crises. this week in many ways, presents the best final chance for the president to cement his foreign policy legacy. in beijing, president obama will meet with president xi of china and the two largest economies colliding when they sit down here. next he goes to berma. and the trip, of course, wraps up down under in brisbane, australia, where he'll likely come face to face with russian president putin at the g-20 summit. in all, the president will attend three international summits in just eight days traveling to three countries and 16 different time zones. buckle up. it's going to be quite a trip. tai and t.j.? >> mary brurks thank you. a bit of mystery surrounding the fate of al baghdadi. they are saying he was critically injured in an air strike this weekend. the u.s. has put a $10 million price tag an al baghdadi's head. president obama authorized the deployment of 1500 additional tros to iraq in the battle against isis. abc's martha raddatz explains their mission. >> reporter: doubling down against isis in iraq. first it was 300 troops on the ground to protect diplomats. growing to almost 1,600 to train and advise. now up to 3,100 approved. not to mention hundreds of air strikes, including these on the besieged town of kobani. outside erbil in baghdad, two expeditionary to assist iraqi and kurdish forces. and at least four additional training sites will be set up in the volatile north, south and al anbar province in the west. the white house insists these are not comdat troops but that is some hot territory. isis strongholds, no question they'll be in more danger. and americans in iraq will get, quote, an appropriate array of force protection capabilities, which will likely mean attack helicopters. matt bradley has been reporting on the grond in iraq for 18 months. we spoke to him an skype from baghdad. >> most iraqis know the obama administration will stick to the commitment its made to not deploy these troops into a wartime scenario. but they see this as one more step toward the inevitable. there has to be u.s. troops an the ground because the iraqi military is incapable of fighting the islamic state. >> reporter: president obama saying he'll ask for even more support from congress. >> i'm going to begin engaging congress over a new authorization to use military force against isil. >> reporter: and when one of the most powerful voices in the newly elected republican senate says things like this -- >> we need to understand that the president is the commander in chief, and that role, i do not believe, should be impinged upon by the congress. >> reporter: the president just might get his wish. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. two americans who had been held by north korea are back with their families this morning after being released. matthew todd miller and kenneth bae arrived in washington state saturday night. they walked off the plane and on to the tarmac into the waiting arms of his family, including his sister terry. >> i started crying and i just was so emotional and then we had agreed that my mom would hug him first. when i saw that, i just -- wow. >> for his first meal back home they had a late night pizza. his story said bae was adamant, no korean food. >> wanted some pizza. he said they were surprised how good of shape he was in. made some trips back and forth, labor camps to the hospital. for the most part looked pretty good. he lost some weight but in a good way is the way he put it. >> for so long you think it's never going to happen and then you touch down on that soil and see your family. >> a big deal. director clapper, national intelligence, the highest ranking official to go in about a decade to north korea. we've had some high profile officials but not officially with the administration. this was huge. welcome home to those guys. we turn to a well-known evangelical minister, miles munroe. he's been killed in a plane crash. this plane was carrying him and nine other people in the bahamas. the plane hit a crane in a shipyard and exploded upon impact. all aboard were killed, including munro's wife and deputy. high was on his way to host conference this week. no serious injuries when this air canada commuter plane crash landed in edmonton. we're learning how close a call. a passenger in the seventh row posted this photo. that's one of the propellers embedded in the fuselage. the passenger said they don't think anyone is taking the accident seriously enough. more tensions over the weekend stemming from the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teen, michael brown. they took to the streets in support of darren wilson, the officer who pulled the trigger. after months of clashes, a grand jury's decision on whether to indict wilson could be announced any day now. the search for a software engineer who vanished in san francisco is now in its second week. 26-year-old dan ha hasn't been seen since halloween. his tech savvy friends and co-workers are turning online trying to find him. they are spreading word through facebook and reddit. ha never returned to work after leaving early with a migraine headache. >> looking back, he certainly was a little quieter than normal, and maybe there were some red flags there. it wasn't necessary -- he's always been a pretty quiet guy. a bit reserved. >> his roommate saw him leaving the apartment on halloween a bit dech disheveled. researchers say the pods may not be risk-free. they may pop them open or injust what's inside. injuries sent more than 700 children to the hospital and one baby died. that lava flow in hawaii's big island isn't moving for now but still a danger for residents. it's brning vegetation and the smoke from that could be a problem for people with respiratory problems. the flow is threatening to cut off several main roads so the health department is warning those with other medical problems to get out now. frigid weather is heading for moist of north america this week. already in minneapolis, homeless shelters are filling up. the twin cities are expecting 6 to 10 inches of snow today followed by an extended period of bitter cold. >> but it's not just minnesota. >> reporter: on another occasion, abbott was escorted away to the chants of his supporters. >> arnold! arnold! >> reporter: the mayor cites public safety saying the homeless turn public spaces into open air latrines. >> there are wrong ways and right ways to do it. in a face-off sunday on abc station wplg, the mayor told abbott he thinks they can compromise an where to serve the meals. >> we want to work with him. >> reporter: abbott started feeding the homeless as a tribute to his late wife won't be bound by red tape. >> these are the poorest of the poor. who could turn them away? i'm turning 100. this is how she decided to celebrate her birthday. eleanor obviously made it. she did this on her 90th and 95th birthday. why not? >> you have to keep going no matter what age. as soon as you stop living, that's when you start dying. she's 101. congratulations. >> i'm going to take baby steps toward that. maybe by the time i'm 200 i'll do that. not for me. not for this morning on "world news now" -- arctic blast. the powerful winter storm about to blast across much of the country putting millions in the deep freeze. accuweather has the latest on the snowfall and the big chill. rail tragedy. a speeding freight train kills an adventurer just there admiring a view. at the wrong place at the wrong time and now the safety questions for thrill seekers. sky show. fireballs plunging from the heavens. the meteor showers captivating the country and will soon see even more. later in "the skinny," no problem for ariana grande and nicki minaj taking home big honors in europe. mtv's big awards show last night and the unforgettable moment you have just got to see. it's monday, november 10th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning to you all on this monday morning. glad you could spend some time with us. i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm tai hernandez. forget the calendar. winter is here or on the way. blame it an a typhoon just off alaska this weekend. >> didn't do much damage there, but its remnants are fueling a blast of frigid air. our coverage begins with abc's alex perez. >> a blast of winter barreling through canada. at calgary international airport visibility down as this storm swallows the city. driving there, also a challenge. winter weather arriving early across the country. in silver springs, california this resort has gotten ten inches of snowfall. in the midwest and parts of minnesota, they are expecting more than a foot of snow and plunging temperatures to start the workweek. in minnesota and wisconsin, snow and plow trucks already on standby. last week, nuri, more than 800 miles wide, battered the alaskan island. with near 100-mile-per-hour winds and waves at least 50 feet high. the crews on the fishing boats from discovery's "deadliest catch" scrambling to stay safe. >> we don't need to get anybody hurt. just get home safe. >> reporter: nuri is one of the most powerful storms ever recorded. the size and strength helped push the jet stream very far to the north. what comes up, must come down. a big dip in the jet stream over the eastern two-thirds of the u.s. which opens the gates for the arctic air to plunge southward this week. those unseasonable temperatures will stretch from the midwest to the gulf coast. that winter weather here much sooner than any of us would like. alex perez, abc news, chicago. this polar plunge is expected to linger across much of the country. >> our coverage continues at accuweather where meteorologist jim dickey has the latest storm track. >> good morning. a disruptive winter storm shaping up here today. going to move its way eastward into the midwest spreading out of the plains. to the north of that, some accumulating snow. in some cases, significant snow a stripe of 6 to 12 inches out of montana across the dakotas near the twin cities into wisconsin. this will bring in a shot arctic air to the eastern seaboard. head into friday, many spots 10 to 20 degrees below average. >> jim dickey at accuweather, thank you so much. heavy rain in the bahamas may have led to a fatal jet crash there. a learjet carrying evangelist myles munroe and either other people crashed. also on board, munroe's wife and deputy. they were heading for a conference he was hosting this week. a teenager has been hailed for saving the life of a philadelphia police officer. the officer was racing to an emergency when a pickup truck slammed into the squad car. 17-year-old joseph chambers who is a volunteer firefighter led the rescue. donte johnson also stepped in to help the drivers as did several other passersby. >> i said can you get out? he said, i can't feel my legs. and his door was jammed shut. i said i can't get you out through the door. i'll have to get you out through the window. >> if we hadn't got him out in time, he would have been hurt bad. >> eyewitnesses say that the police car burst into flames just seconds after the officer was pulled to safety. both he and the driver of the truck are expected to be okay. the campus of liberty university in virginia is mourning the death of one of its students killed by a speeding train. the victim and a friend were on a bridge with a stunning view and never realized they were in danger. abc's bazi kanani reports. >> i just hit kids on the bridge. emergency on the bridge. >> reporter: that fast moving train crossing over the river. a group of young adventurers grieving after their friends 21-year-old jon gregoire and victoria bridges, were struck by an oncoming norfolk southern train saturday afternoon. >> two of them on the south end of the bridge. we hit one for sure. i'm not sure what happened to the other one. >> reporter: gregoire killed instantly. bridges airlifted to a nearby hospital. police still investigating how and why the two got up on the bridge. the area is popular with photographers and nature lovers like gregoire posting this photo on instagram one week ago posing on the very same bridge where he lost his life. we've seen these terrifying train track accidents before. in july, these two women in indiana trying to outrun a freight train surviving incredibly by laying down flat on the tracks. to get on to this railway bridge you'd have to ignore these warning signs and climb over this seven-foot high barbed wire fence. despite the obvious risk, more than 400 people in the u.s. are killed each year while trespassing on train tracks. the number of deaths up nearly 25% in the last year. victoria bridges is one of the survivors now recovering at home and possibly facing criminal trespassing charges. the railroad norfolk southern told us they could put up more signs and build higher fences but that would still not stop someone determined to get on the track. bazi kanani, abc news. president obama is opening a three-country tour of the asia-pacific region with a stop in china. he speaks at the asia-pacific economic cooperation summit. he'll also meet with the chinese president. then he flies to myanmar and australia. new evidence general motors was aware of the ignition switch defect earlier than it has admitted.
