As you can see, all highways and interstates are at least partially covered with snow and ice. But the worst conditions are found in the southeastern part of the state. Thats where the roads are completely covered. Blowing snow is also expected. Here in the metro. Snow plows are out on the streets around the clock. It takes a lot of people. Theres almost 2,000 miles of roadway out there. 750 miles of snow routes system. Its a lot to do. And it takes a lot of people to get it done. Crews are targeting des moines major roads first. Then residential side streets. And for the second time. Theyre putting a new tactic to the test. Dubbed the wing formation. That means up to five plows clear the street at the same time. In just one pass. Another important factor in the snow removal process is the preparation before it even falls. A salt brine solution was laid down sunday.
