the first video at the height of that monster storm is just coming in. stormteam 5 meteorologist danielle vollmar is tracking its path. and she joins us now. danielle? danielle: that's right, karen. i was a very strong storm earlier in the week. in fact, the strongest hurricane on record in both the eastern pacific and the atlantic basin but since then, coming inland it has weakened. now a category one hurricane with winds of just 75 miles an hour and gusts up to about 90 miles an hour. it is also moving pretty quickly to the north and east at about 21 miles an hour. now it's already brought a lot of rain for parts of mexico. anywhere from about 10 to 11 inches in spots. and expected in the next 24 hours to bring any with from 8-12 inches in mexico. then it travels north and feeds tropical moisture into texas. this is one area under flash flood watches this morning because of another system that does not need any of the rain. now closer to home, you see this area of low pressure, this cold front providing heavy rain for dallas, texas. all of this is moving to the east. while we're under high pressure right now, we are going to expect some rain in our forecast. i want to talk about what's going on right now though. we do have pretty much clear skies. we are going to see some clouds begin to build in generally from the east to the west. and then from the west to the east. from that approaching system so through the day it's going to be a mostly cloudy day. temperatures starting out on the chilly side in the 30's. but it will warm up into the low 50's by afternoon. so we're going to talk about timing our chances for rain and a cooldown that comes behind it. karen and frank. frank: thanks a lot, danielle. for residents along the mexican coastline and the tourists who flock to resort areas, there is no time left to escape the storm. karen: many are now hunkering down in hotel rooms hoping for the best. breaking news coverage continues with our john atwater. john: this will be a safe room. john: some tourists are riding out the storm in their hotels. but so many boarded buses and evacuated the coastline headed to shelters farther inland. >> underneath our door this morning was a note that said that the government was evacuating the hotel in the tourist zones. >> we've been running around trying to find a way out. we're a little concerned but trying to keep our game face on. john: the monster storm has interrupted vacations for tens of thousands of americans in purity a val val. businesses are boarded up. streets are empty and airport s are closed. this woman was able to leave mexico, arriving at logan just as the hurricane made land fall. >> (through interpreter) a lot of rain. john: towns along the coastline are trying to get resources in place. >> this is actually a mobile hospital. john: as those in the path of the storm do their best to try to stay safe. >> it will keep us protected from any flying glass. john: because airports closed many could not escape. they are now staying in the nearly 2,000 shelters set up by the mexican government. in the news room, john atwater, wcvb, newscenter 5. frank: right now two more students arrested in methuen, charged with threatening to open fire at their school. methuen's police chief tells us the suspects are eighth grade boys at tenney middle school. a 14-year-old told students not to show up for school on monday because he was going to "shoot up the school." a 13-year-old had said that he would supply weapons. officials say after a thorough investigation, they did not find any weapons. who had the courage to come forward in this case, and they say they do not take these threats lightly. >> we just want parents and students to know we take this extremely serious. i don't care if you're joking. i don't care if you're fooling around. i don't care if you think it's funny. you make these statements, you are going to get charged. frank: the 13-year old is back home with his parents. the 14-year-old will be in juvenile court monday for arraignment. police are encouraging parents these threats. this is the second time this week methuen police are dealing with threats. just on monday a methuen high student was arrested and charged with a threat made against methuen high school. police have no indication that the cases are connected. karen: a teenager is charged with driving in centerville after escaping a fiery crash. police say he crashed a truck into the tree on great marsh road and it burst into flames. firefighters arrived at the scene, put out the fire. the young man was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released. right now police in bourne are on the hunt for a prisoner who escaped from a cruiser. bourne police say branden coggeshall somehow slipped through a small opening in the cruiser at the police station. he is not considered dangerous. frank: right now the harvard university campus on alert. a student, the victim of a frightening assault, chased to her dorm. she managed to lock the suspect out but just barely. newscenter 5's mary saladna spoke with her last night. >> you're afraid if the situation tells you to run away from i, you need to. mary: we're protecting her identity but telling her story. a shar vard student's close call housing complex. it happened friday morning around 5:00 a.m. as she took her five month old puppy out for a bathroom break. she was just leaving the green up. >> i trusted my gut and started walking as fast as i could back to the apartment. when i got to the steps that lead to my building, i paused to turn around and there was a man running full force at me. mary: at that point the student ran to the door frantic tellally unlocked it and dashed inside. >> got up to the first landing in time to turn around and see him throw the full weight of himself against the door. and smack it with his fist. mary: she says the stranger jumped into the open side door of the minivan and the driver sped off. >> if someone isn't planning to abduct someone else, why would they not get into the front. mary: university police have added extra patrols and sent out a campus alert warning state erchts to walk in pairs and stay alert. police described the suspect as a tall mask lar white man in his 20's with a short cropped hair and a brown work jacket. the minivan an older model possibly dark glean with a silver bumper. at harvard, i'm mary saladna, wcvbings newscenter 5. frank: a boston police officer who fatally shot a man in a south end apartment last year after responding to a domestic violence call will not face any criminal charges. the suffolk county d.a. cleared officer david hansford, citing that he was acting in self-defense. an investigation found that he shot remis andrews after the suspect lunged at him with two large knives and a carving fork. karen: new this morning we're learning that the defense attorney hired by mayor walsh to represent the city of boston in a teamsters extortion case will be paid $625 an hour. "the globe" reporting that rate is nearly three times what the city usually pays outside lawyers. brian t. kelly is a former convict whitey bulger. members of the local 25 are accused of intimidating the staff and crew of the reality shot in the boston area last year. a former city of boston employee has won a major lawsuit against the city. $11 million after deciding that she was discriminated against while working in the city's treasury department. received fewer benefits and a lower income than her white co-workers. in a statement, mayor walsh's spokeswoman told "the boston globe" that the allegations came under a previous administration, and that the city will probably appeal the decision. frank: right now leominster police hoping to find two men who robbed a weekly bingo game thursday night stealing money meant for charity. the masked pair surprised players at the knights of columbus hall and were gone in seconds, making off with more than $1,300. >> i look up and i see this fellow with a halloween mask and i thought it was a joke, you know, and then he just grabbed it and he was out. i only saw him for a second. frank: several organizers ran after them, but they jumped into a black pick-up and took off. the city of leominster has set up a fund to replace the stolen cash. bingo is the biggest fundraiser for the knights who provide scholarships and hold a holiday dinner for senior citizens. karen: the search for a missing cargo ship intensifies. but first let's talk about an annual tra decision in new hampshire. volunteers were busy all night loading more than 900 jack-o-lanterns into the pumpkin tower for the state's pumpkin festival. one year after riots broke out near the keene pumpkin festival, organizers say they're ready to move on and carve hurricane. we'll talk about how much rain it could bring to other parts of karen: new details are emerging about the deadly rescue mission in northern iraq. master sergeant joshua wheeler is identified as the american soldier killed during the mission. the oklahoma native is the first american to die in combat since the u.s. launched the anti-isis campaign last year. dozens of american and iraqi troops raided a compound in northern iraq and freed about seventy prisoners who were about to be executed. the pentagon says a number of militants were killed and captured. >> this was a support mission in which they were providing support to the iraqi-- to the kurdistan regional government. and us forces are not in an active combat mission in iraq. karen: wheeler was a father of four with eleven bronze stars. he was one month shy of his 40th birthday. right now the search for "el faro"'s data recorder is underway. the florida-based cargo ship disappeared earlier this month when it encountered hurricane joaquin. members of the search team believe they have about a week to find the recorder before its batteries stop sending signals. they're now at a 100-square-mile search zone near the bahamas. 33 people, including 28 americans, were on board "el faro" when it disappeared. continue to be a major problem some areas seeing more than 13 inches of rain. it's continuous, washing out causing chaos. the rain causing plenty of accidents with high water rescues and other problems keeping emergency crews busy. >> we really weren't expecting this much rain. it just kind of came all of a sudden so we just kind of jumped out and started helping. frank: streets and highway s are closed crippling traffic to a crawl backed up for miles. many people stranded. and that threat is not over yet with even more rain expected this weekend. karen: and hurricane patricia, speaking of rain. danielle: that moisture will feed into parts of texas that has already been soaked with more than 10 inches of rain. expecting 48 inches on top of that by the end of the sunday. that's why they have flash flood watches there and flash flood warnings all across the area. closer to home we're dryer though. i do want to talk about patricia though because it was weakened to a category one hurricane with winds of 75 miles per hour, gusts to 90 miles an hour. it is moving to the north-northeast at about 21 miles an hour so it is, you towards dallas, houston to areas that really don't need the rain. in fact, here's the latest motion. by monday morning, they've to seven inches. we're going to ad four to eight inches on top of that so see the bull's eye here for the houston area, dallas area and all this moisture. it is associated not only with patricia but also this cold front that is stalled out over the area. and this whole system is headed in our direction. it's going to take its time getting here throw so for today high pressure dominates our weather giving us at least dry conditions, not necessarily tons of sunshine. in fact, i think a lot of clouds are begin to begin to build in first from the east to the west and then from the west to the east. from our approaching system. we are going to talk about some rain. in fact, rain is entering our forecast tomorrow. it looks like on the medium side especially in the morning hours. i think by afternoon though we're going to get some clearing. we're dry monday and tuesday and then some of those remnants of patricia associated with that frontal boundary could come into our area and give us a good chunk of rain. we really do need the rain. we're down over 7.5 inches for the year. down over two inches for the month of october. so i know we don't necessarily love to have it. it the catchens a lot of our plans outside but really do need it. now this morning, we're starting out in the 30's in boston. 34 worcester. it's chilly in keene and concord. you're checking in this morning in the 20's. nantucket, you're the warm spot at 50 degrees right now. and today with the wind out of the north and east and then shifting to the south and east, we're really going to warm up into the low 50's. 51 in boston. 50 worcester. maybe the mid 50's on nantucket. again, we're looking for increasing clouds through the afternoon. i think we'll see some sunshine at least this morning. you can see that indicator on the future cast. notice these clouds pushing in from east to west. and then these other clouds moving in from west to east. and that's associated with our frontal boundary that is going to give us the rain. leave showers in the forecast and some showers early tomorrow. but then we will see some sunshine, i think, by the afternoon. notice those temperatures warming into the low 60's because they're associated with a warm front. so here we go for sunday morning we start out with some showers as early as 7:00 in worcester county. southern new hampshire. they move towards boston and the north shore by about 9:00 or so. we're going to leave them in the forecast until about 12:00. notice they're trail to go the south shore and the cape you're going to get it last. a lot of us may not get as much as we'd like. then we start to clear out through the afternoon and see more sunshine. sunday. i want to reiterate that but we could see some early showers. that means if you are headed out to the pate roes game it doesn't look so bad actually. you may have one or two showers if you're tailgating earlier. by the end of the game we're looking at mostly cloudy skies with some sunshine sunshine breaking through the clouds and temperatures in the lower 60's which we will take. as we go through the workweek we start to cool off. we look for the next chance for significant rain coming wednesday into say 16-year-old romondo cepeda of dorchester confessed to stabbing 17-year-old mason raymond in the heart. cepeda, who has a juvenile record involving violent crime, is being charged as an adult. for first degree murder. he's being held without bail frank: officials in colorado say theater shooter james holmes was the colorado state penitentiary. the inmate also allegedly officials say the inmate lunged at him while the officer was hallway early this month. holmes was not injured. into whether the i.r.s. scrutinized the tea party and similar organizations is over. the justice department notified congress in a letter that it will not bring charges against former senior i.r.s. official lois lerner. the letter said the probe found substantial evidence of mismanagement and poor judgment but nothing criminal. frank: it looks like we may see a low-cost alternative to the cancer and aids drug selling for $750 per pill. imprimis pharmaceuticals says it will offer a new, low-cost version of daraprim for as little as a dollar a dose. turing pharmaceuticals, the company that produces the drug, is now facing an investigation in new york for possible antitrust violations. >> now is honored at the boston hot pink luncheon and symposium. karen: 91-year-old carol stevens of scituate is known as one of the longest living breast cancer survivors. she was there for the fifth annual luncheon. carol was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1957 at the age of 33. she had just given birth to her fourth child. doctors at the time gave her five years to live despite a radical mastectomy and removal of her ovaries. carol's key to survival? carol: every two weeks i would get a baby-sitter and go out with my husband. and i'm here. karen: carol says she's very blessed and very happy and there is definitely going to be some frost out there especially north and west. the reason we don't have the headlines is we've already seen our first official freeze. so we are talking about mid 20's for you folks in concord. 24 jaffrey. 24 degrees in orange. 27 in fitchburg. so it's a chilly start for all of you. in worcester county today, as we go through the day by lunchtime, only warming into the mid 40's and through the afternoon the upper 40's. notice though we are going to leave an increasing clouds as we go through the day. and that's associated with our next system moving in from the west to the east. it is 50 degrees though on nantucket. so it's milder there for you folks. and in boston as we go through the day warming up into the low 50's. those winds shifting from the north and east to the south and east and high temperatures are going to range anywhere from 49 it is going to be a mix of sun and clouds with more clouds at the end of the day. the rain is going to hold off though until overnight. in fact, as you look at satellite and radar right now, there are some low-level clouds trying to push here towards the cape and more heavier low-level say, central new york. all of this is headed in our direction. so here we go. it's a warm front with some rain showers. so we're going to time out the rain showers as well as talk about the update on hurricane karen? karen: thanks, danielle. hurricane patricia is weakening after making landfall -- crashing into the west coast of mexico right now. we're getting our first look at the height of that monster storm is just coming in. packing all that destructive power on a path to a world-famous tourist spot then turning north to the u.s. border. from this satellite image, you can see the storm's eye. hurricane patricia, winds as and up to 20 inches of rain, powers into mexico friday as a gat koar 5 storm. this angry surf hit the vacation area of puerto vallarta where they were boarding up, filling sandbags, streets deserted as thousands of tourists tried to outrun patricia. >> we were evacuated from our hotel this morning for the hurricane. we came to this convention center and they said it's not a safe place so we're going to the texaco center. karen: stranded with her family. >> we've been running around trying to find a way out. we're a little concerned but we're trying to keep our game face on for the sids. karen: this is the strongest ever to hit the americas, enough to make cars, even planes go airborne. the lowest pressure ever recorded. >> it's literally is mind boggling. the only way to describe it is potentially catastrophic. karen: patricia will bring mud slides as it barges inland. losing strength, nearly 20 flood watches are out for texas, louisiana and oklahoma with 10-12 inches of rainfall possible through the weekend. the red cross is ready to head into the areas devastated by the storm. volunteers have been getting supplies ready at donation centers like this one in about seven rows down. >> the right wrist was caught between the two chairs, severely hit my mouth on the way down. fortunately i didn't lose any teeth. sera: a family member captured the after math on video while the e.m.t.'s attended to rose they noticed a buy being taken out on a stretcher. it's unclear how he was hurt or his condition but rose believes the rush for t-shirts created a middle-schooler in randolph. police say the 11-year-old girl got off the bus alone thursday afternoon when an elderly man approached and grabbed her by the arm. she was able to get away, but the man continued to follow her. >> she moved away from him, went down the street towards her home. she then stopped and sat down. he came and sat down next to her. he didn't say anything at that time. and then he followed her once more again not making any statements to her. that is the last time that she saw him. frank: the girl describes the man as an elderly white man with grey hair about 5'7", wearing a red red sox hooded sweat shirt with jeans and flip flops. an alleged drunk driver involved in a fiery crash in yarmouth. her young daughter in the back seat. police tell us 35-year-old christine cogill of marshfield was in three crashes before this one on route 28. rescuers pulled her from the car unconscious just before it burst into flames. the victim's six-year-old daughter managed to get out on her own. hospital. karen: police in brighton are still searching for a killer after a man was found dead in a busy section of the city. the shooting happened shortly after midnight. yesterday neighbors reported hearing shots. police found the 30-year-old victim on teleford street. the suspect took off through a nearby parking lot. police are snning area surveillance video looking for more clues. right now a connecticut town is on the hunt for whoever forced schools into lockdown. thousands of kids ordered to stay inside. frantic parents turned away by police. someone called a fairfield elementary school yesterday morning claiming he was heading two other schools got calls claiming there were bombs on campus. parents were told to stay away from the schools. many of them didn't. >> we cannot let you in. they are in lockdown. if you go in there, you're going to get shot. >> okay. >> that's how it works. >> okay. found. and police have turned up no credible presidential campaign is scaling back on staff, salaries, travel, and other costs. the bush camp says it will invest more cash in securing wins in early voting states. right now, the focus appears to be on new hampshire. staffers will reportedly face payroll cuts up to 40%. bush, who is already visiting each of the four early states to make more frequent and longer trips to those states. karen: an update now on a rhode island man who says applebee's never paid him for a year's worth of work. the restaurant has now agreed to pay caleb dyl-- who is autistic-- for about 480 hours. the chain had originally agreed to pay for only 166 hours of work, but dyl's parents spoke up. dyl worked as a prep cook as part of a job-placement program. house republicans targeting the president's health care team 5 forecast with meterologist danielle vollmar. danielle: we are focusing in on patricia now, a category 1 hurricane. you can see it over parts of mexico. winds of 75 miles an hour. gusts to near 90. all this moisture headed up to the north and east. so let's track it for you and show you where it's going. going towards the texas area as well as the gulf of mexico. and that tropical moisture is going to feed into texas. that is an area that does not need the rain. obviously mexico doesn't either picking up over 10 inches from some of this storm and texas itself has picked up quite a bit look at this. in the past 24 hours just from a system out ahead of this picking dallas. boston since september 1 only picking up 4.5 inches of rain. so you can see they've picked up well over what we picked up in about two-and-a-half months they picked up in just one day. triggering the showshz. we're watching this. it will kind of combine together. and eventually going to impact our weather later this week. frontal boundary. that's going to lift through the afternoon. i do want to show you what's going on currently. our rain impacts look like this. it's on the way up for tomorrow associated with that warm front. we are dry monday and tuesday. then we're watching that moisture from patricia for wednesday into thursday. that. we really do need it because a lot of the area actually under a moderate drought at this point. down over 7.5 inches in boston. down over 7 inches now in worcester for the year. so we're looking for the rain. we're going to eventually get some at least for tomorrow morning. it's not a washout though. this morning it's all about the cold temperatures. you can see we're starting in the 20's in keene, concord. 34 in worcester right now. 39 degrees in boston. 50 on nantucket. so that's the milder spot. and for today, only going to reach into the low 50's. we're looking for a mix of sun and clouds. those winds shifting from the north and east to the south and east. watch what happens with these clouds over the east coast of massachusetts. they start to push in through about midday so it is a mostly cloudy day. i think more high, thin clouds. and then they're going to start to lower from west to east. associated with our next system bringing us the rain overnight into first thing tomorrow morning. and tonight temperature s are going to fall into the 40's. so it is a chilly rain out there or even the 30's in concord. and then tomorrow we'll warm up hifned the frontal impoundary into the low 60's in boston. we may hold in the 50's in worcester but lower 60's on the cape and islands. again it's not a washout. let me time the rain for you. you notice by 7:00 it's enter being worcester county. maybe a couple of downpours through southern new hampshire. by 9:00 all of this shifts to the east. it continues through about lunchtime. then we start to clear out. we'll see a lot of sunshine later in the day. so it is not a washout. we continue to keep sunshine in the forecast as we get towards monday and tuesday although monday it's more of a chilly sunshine behind this system with high pressure dominating those winds out of the north and east. we keep it pretty cool on tuesday as well. bring in rain chances though beginning wednesday night into thursday. thursday looks like a good dose of some rain. frank and karen. karen: juror in his first murder trial. he's currently serving a life term for the murder of odin lloyd. but the defense is appealing partly due to a tip that one of the jurors lied about being aware of other murder charges against hernandez. prosecutors are questioning the tipster's credibility. karen: right now, the governor's abuse prevention in new hampshire is deciding how it will spend $3 million in new funding to deal with the state's growing drug abuse problems. more than 320 people died from drug-related overdoses last year, and the state is expected to match or exceed that number this year. the commission did decide to continue funding the state's drug czar job. frank: the house has passed a budget bill that would repeal key parts of the affordable care act and strip federal funds from planned parenthood for a year. the bill would repeal the requirement for all americans to obtain health insurance and for employers to offer it to their workers. but the budget reconciliation bill faces an uncertain fate in the senate, and president obama has vowed to veto it. karen: there's a fix to a problem that may be draining your i-phone battery. facebook admitting defects in its app have been sapping battery life. i-phone users noticed the problem when apple launched ios9, which allows you to track how much power your apps use. in response to complaints, title. historic bells will soon ring again across boston's south end. frank: yesterday four bells from the former holy trinity church were lifted into a reinforced bell free at the cathedral of the holy cross. it took about half an hour to get each bell into place. the bells are originally from new orleans. the bell free has been reinforced with steel and the bells are now wired to ring electronically instead of by swinging. you could call it a trick and a treat. karen: an early halloween surprise, the masked superstar that made his way through a local supermarket and what he left
