tv announcement called the event a perfect success, citing pyongyang's legal right to defend itself against u.s. aggression. >> the real danger for the united states is whether or not north korea has intentions to demonstrate their capabilities as far as the pacific and certainly to threaten the u.s. continent. >>reporter: news of the event came after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake was deengted near a known north korea -- detected near a known north korea test site. south korea quickly condemned the debtonnation and called a emergency national security council meeting. the country's president told reporters the test is a threat on our people's survival and future and a direct challenge if confirmed, this would be north korea's fourth nuclear test, the first was carried out in 2006. the unitedflations security council will meet -- united nations security council will meet on this. japan has deployed a reconnaissance aircraft to try to collect atmospheric samples and the u.s. has its news. detectives from the nypd crime scene unit overnight continuing their investigation inside andrea carruth's home after a search by k-9s for evidence. >> we miss her, we love her. . >>reporter: friends and family of the 39-year-old, five months pregnant, mom-to-be growing more concerned by the hour. >> we really want to find out what happened or what has happened. >>reporter: police say carruth was last seen sunday in her home on coursea avenue shortly before she was supposed to meet a friend for brunch. she never showed up. investigators spent tuesday picture, also questioning her live-in boyfriend at the house where she runs a small day care and preschool. >> she would not lead us through this, so she real estate not willingly out there -- she's not willingly out there. >> canty of queens pleaded guilty to first- degree manslaughter. he was arrested in april of 14 after shooting jessica canty at their house in ozone park. the couple's two children were home at the time. canty is expected to receive a 25-year sentence. an update as a man in a wheelchair gets arrested again. the district attorney says kelvin dennison of queens tried to rob the t.d. bank in sunnyside on monday, claiming he had a bond. the teller handed over the cash and he fled. police say he was caught on surveillance camera robbing another bank. ceremonies are being held year anniversary of the attacks on thecy teer cal newspaper charlie hebdo and a deli. three plaques were unveiled honoring the 17 people who lost their lives when islamic extremists opened fire. the first plaque is hanging if true, the new technology would greatly increase the threat the rogue nation poses to the region and the world. cbs 2's brian webb joins us live in the cbs 2 newsroom with late developments. brian. >>reporter: u.s. officials and nuclear experts have long been skeptical about north korea's claims about h-bombs. but if it's confirmed, one nuclear watchdog group said this is a wakeup call. a news anchor made the surprise announcement on north koreans state tv, calling the event a perfect success and citing pyongyang's legal right to defend itself against u.s. hoss tillity. if confirmed, the event further leader kim scwrong-un. neighboring countries and the u.s. has imposed sanctions against the nation for pursuing a nuclear program. >> the real danger for the united states is whether or tremont avenue last month. police say the suspect bumped into a 61-year-old man and they argue the victim was thrown to the floor, punched and kicked. the attacker ran off. the victim refused medical attention. the violent arrest of james blake made headlines last year. now three british men have pleaded guilty in an identity takedown. blake was tackleed in september by an undercover officer searching for suspects using midtown hotel. the civilian complaint review board says excessive force was used in the arrest. the three british men, all in their 20s will serve six months in jail. strong reaction this morning for and against new gun control measures being implemented by president obama. the president grew emotional when talking about one of the shootings that led to the officially what the announcement will be, but the wall street journal is for a major overhaul here, and those plans are expected to be unveiled as early as this week. it's one of the busiest commuter hubs in the country, and most commuters will tell you also one of the dingiest, but that could finally change. the wall street journal says governor cuomo wants to jump start long-delayed plans to overhaul penn station. that would include moving amtrak's waiting area across the street to the farley post office, and according to the report, redevelopments the n.j. transit and long island railroad concourses. >> they have the worst commutes in the country on long island. average commuter spends nearly three work weeks sitting in traffic every year. the answer is improving your mass transportation system. >>reporter: yesterday the governor outlined a plan for another long-delayed project, a 9.8-mile third track expansion on the lirr from floral park to earlier plans displaced 200 homes. this time 20 homes within a mile of mineola would lose five feet of back yard land. homeowners would be compensated. 30 businesses would have the option of paid relocation. >> i think a third track would definitely help with the bottleneck. >> is it going to be a fair eminent domain? >>reporter: you sound skeptical. >> yeah, i am. >>reporter: as part of his transportation plans, the governor also wants to add customs to long island's macarthur airport to open it up to international travel, but as for penn station here, of course, we'll learn more later this afternoon. reporting you need to know. in queens we have construction blocking a lane on the southbound side of the van wyck at hillside avenue. if this is a portion of your ride, you'll want to take a quick peek at this. delays now back to the l.i.e. pretty lengthy, give yourself plenty of time. construction clearing at the inbound queens midtown tunnel, you are delay free, so that's some better news. but some subway issues may affect your ride due to a rail condition. forest hills-bound r trains are running on the d line from dekalb avenue to 34th street, herald square. then they switch over to the m line from 34th street, herald square to queens plaza. alternate side is in effect city wide and do remember to be safe, don't text and drive. and now to another commuter story. a new study find that is a rule meant to protect airline much time on the tarmac is actually increasing their travel time. the transportation department rules requires that passengers be allowed to deplane within three hours of boarding or landing for domestic flights or the airline will be fined. well, it turns out airlines would rather cancel the flights than incur the fees, making travel more difficult. researchers at dartmouth college and the massachusetts institute of technology propose increasing that delay window by half an hour. mary. >> alex, thank you. a brooklyn woman gets robbed and assaulted on her way home from the grocery store, all caught on camera. in this surveillance video, you can see two men run behind the woman and attack her as she carried her groceries home on bleaker street in bushwick late last month. the video later shows the men throwing the 45-year-old woman to the ground. police say they stole her bag with $600 inside. neighbors say the robbery is just another reason to be cautious in the area. >> a couple of weeks ago there was a shooting right here on nickelback avenue. so, you know, you just gotta be careful. don't walk at night. somebody else. >> a neighbor who saw the woman right after the attack says she was advisably shaken, but un -- visibly shaken but unharmed. officials in new york city say they brought 97 people to safe havens during monday night's bitter blast. >> what's being done to help the homeless in westchester when it gets dangerously cold. >>reporter: huddled at cafeteria tables at a white plains homeless shelter, they are grateful to be in out of the cold. this is one of 10 facilities for the homeless, offering services in westchester county. beds wait for another night of frigid temperatures when the regulars, the walk-ins and the referrals come in to survive. >> very busy night. 19 drop-ins and 31 regular reeferls. >>reporter: the county says there are 329 people in the family shelters countywide, 200 regular singles, another 160 drop-ins, something under 700 suburban neighbors needing a warm place to sleep. getting them here isn't always easy. >> there always are some people themselves, but the police do a pretty good job in seeking them out. >>reporter: now comes governor cuomo's executive order to bring in the homeless with or without their consent, an abrupt pronouncement that many feel raises more questions than answers. >> if he wants to do this, then maybe he should have the state police do it and not put our own villages, cities, towns and counties in jeopardy if something goes wrong here 6789 >>reporter: it's feared compulsory roundups of the homeless could spark lawsuits. even those receiving the help say it shouldn't be compulsory. >> i don't see how you could be forced to do anything, but i mean, it should be a person's free will, though. >>reporter: there are cases when a homeless person can be compelled to leave the street if they are judged to be a danger to themselves, but those cases are skiers know it means they'll soon be able to hit the slopes. >> i'm ecstatic that the resorts are going to open soon. >>reporter: typically camelback mountain opens to skiers the second week of december. the last two years it's opened the day after thanksgiving. but record warmth at the end of 2015 has meant no snow and no ability to make snow. so this bitter blast is a welcome gift in the poconos. it means the snow guns are finally cranking and blanketing these trails. >> the snow that's man made isn't a chemical. it's not some mystery concoction. it's water and air. it's the same thing that mother nature produces. we just give it a little bit of a boost. >>reporter: there are nearly 200 snow making machines operating around the clock to get camelback mountain ready for its delayed opening weekend. >> we've really been able to pile up the snow. and the strategy is to make it come in with snow cats which basically groom the snow out, so spread it out evenly. >>reporter: justin heller is a lift operations attendant and avid skier. he says he's never been happier to do his job. >> just having to look at dead grass and dead trees, no snow in the area, it's kind of been a bummer, but finally seeing snow being made and opening up on thursday, it will be a blast. >>reporter: camelback officials say they require a 12- to 24-inch base of snow before they open a trail, so word from police that about 3:00 this morning during their investigation officers here on the scene found a woman's body unconscious, unresponsive. they say which the time that -- by the time the ems arrived here she was deceased. so just a few minutes ago we saw the medical examiner remove that body from the scene here. they still have not identified that person, but the pregnant still waiting for answers. this morning the medical examiner's office removing a body from anndrea caruth's home after a thorough search for evidence by the crime scene unit yoefort >> we miss her, we love her. we worry about her and the baby. >>reporter: friends and family of the 39-year-old, five-months- pregnant, mom-to-be growing more concerned by the hour. >> we really want to find out what happened or what has happened. >>reporter: police say caruth home on coursea avenue shortly before she was supposed to meet a friend for brunch. she never showed up. investigators say spent tuesday going door to door with her picture, also questioning her live-in boyfriend at the house where she runs a small day care and preschool. >> she would not leave her students, so she's not willingly out there. >> just to hear the news that she's missing is a loss. >>reporter: loved ones anxiously waiting for news, praying both caruth and her >> not only find her, but find her alive and well. >> i'm hopeful, i'm very hopeful that she's going to come forth. >>reporter: now back live, you can see police standing guard, keeping patrol outside of caruth's home here on corsa avenue. again, not too long ago a female body was brought out of her home. police at this hour still, though, not confirming whether or not it was caruth. they do tell us at this time they do have a person who they are questioning in change. the wall street journal says governor cuomo wants to jump start long-delayed plans to overhaul penn station. that would include moving amtrak's waiting area across the street to the farley post office, and according to the report redeveloping the n.j. >> they have the worst commutes in the country on long island. average commuter spends nearly three work weeks sitting in traffic every year. >> the answer is improving your mass transportation system. >>reporter: yesterday the governor outlined a plan for another long-delayed project, a 9.8-mile third track expansion on the lirr from floral park to hicksville. earlier plans displaced 200 homes. this time 20 homes within a mile of mineola would lose five feet of back yard land. homeowners would be compensated. 30 businesses would have the option of paid relocation. >> i think a third track would definitely help with the bottleneck. >> is it going to be a fair eminent domain? >>reporter: you sound skeptical. >> yeah, i am. >>reporter: well, governor cuomo has other transportation plans, including wanting to add customs to long island macarthur airport to open it up to international travel. station, we, of course, will 83-year-old lois collie was found beaten to death at her estate in north salem at her estate called wind swept farm. now a twist in the case. police say the investigation has letted to the arrest of two men who worked there. they're accused of stealing $thrirtsz worth of hay and selling it. police say there's no link, though, between the arrest and collie's murder. ceremonies are being held in paris, marking the one-year anniversary of the attacks on satirical newspaper charlie hebdo and a kosher deli. president hollande and the mayor unveiled three plaques honoring the 17 people who lost their live when is an islamic extremist opened fire. the plaque is hanging at charlie hebdo and a police officer that lost his life trying to stop a gunman and the third is at a deli where different gunmen killed four people. chris wragge wants to keep in new jersey, but yesterday the democratic lawmaker introduced to a family that has just arrived from the war-torn country. christine sloan has we'll see what day three of the trading year brings. yesterday the markets were flat after monday's selloff. the dow finished nine points higher, the nasdaq dropped 11. investors will be watching as payroll processor adp llses numbers on private secretary -- releases numbers on private secretarior job growth for december. that will happen before the opening bill. airlines are raking in record profits because of low fuel costs, but that isn't translating into cheaper tickets. just the opposite. most major airlines kicked off the new year by raising prices on round-trip tickets by $6. delta was first, southwest, american, united, jetblue and virgin america quickly matched that increase. and "the force awakens" is breaking records at the box office and soon you'll be able to watch it at home. cable network stars has acquired the tv rights to the film part of a manufacture bigger deal between stars and disney. no word on what stars is paying. i'm guess ago lot. chris and mary thrnchts york state legislature will debate legalizing the now-banned hoverboards. the logic of doing it was outlined a week ago in a news conference. jose perralitya says people will ride them anyway but generation of wearable technology. it looks like a typical belt, but hidden inside there is so- called smart sensor technology that can track your health, like recording waist size, eating habits, steps and even this is a rink, heas a hand motion controller for those that like to play in virtual reality. the last project is a little harder to see. it's a watch strap called tip talk and it lets you hear your smart phone without headphones. all you have to do is touch your ear and viola, calls, video and anything else you play can be heard in your ear without pesky headphone cords. don't expect to see these on store shelves anytime soon. samsung says the project rs still in development phases but we'll be able to see these prototypes and other eye- popping technology at the c.e.s. it's going to be harder to telluride if someone is speaking to you -- tell if someone is speaking to you. you can expect a lot of automotive technology designed to connect with the user's smart phone. inside of the basement of her home here on corsa avenue. at this point they're not confirming whether it is in fact caruth, but it appears her family will soon get some answers about her disappearance. this morning the medical examiner's office removing a body from andrea caruth's home after a thorough search for unit overnight. >> we miss her, we love her. baby. >>reporter: friends and family of the 39-year-old, five-months- more concerned by the hour. >> we really want to find out happened. >>reporter: police say caruth was last seen sunday in her home on corsa avenue shortly before she was supposed to meet a friend for brunch. she never showed up. investigators spent tuesday picture, also questioning her live-in boyfriend at the house where she runs a small day care and detective jim enez arriving at a place that is out of the jurisdiction in woodbridge, new jersey, during work hours essentially. >>reporter: attorney daniel gonzalez represents clients, jimenez testified against in court. he says he started investigating the sergeant with a camera after getting word he was leaving perth amboy, new jersey when he should be working. >> for years i've been indicating there's been an issue with this officer. >>reporter: we reached out to jimmenez' attorney. he says the officer's responsibility was suspension and paid back some of his salary. they say he was staying at this address after separating from his wife and gonzalez is making this bigger than it is because he has a vendetta against the officer. >> i think that's inaccurate. i think that in this day and police officers to be followed because oftentimes they're doing things they shouldn't be doing. >>reporter: the middlesex county prosecutor's office initially looked at this but did not surveillance cameras robbing another bank. he pleaded guilty and was free to enter a mental health facility. happening today, a former new york city cop will be sentenced for the shooting death of his time. canty is expected to receive a 25-year prison sentence. a judges has postponed today's scheduled deposition of bill cosby's wife, camille. camille cosby can now appeal the december 31st order requiring her to be deposed by attorneys of her husband's seven accusers. in the civil lawsuit, the women accused bill cosby of sexual misconduct and they are suing him for defamation. mrs. cosby requested the delay claiming the deposition would be a privacy and freedom issue. there are reports today that governor cuomo will make a major announcement on a long- awaited project. >> it could affect a lot of long island and new jersey commuters. cbs's andrea grimes is at penn station with more for us. andrea. >>reporter: well, chris and mary, governor cuomo is expected to make that announcement here at penn it's unclear exactly what he'll be announcing, but the wall street journal is reporting that he's set to unveil plans for a major renovation as early as this week. it's one would you like to see? >> more escalators. >>reporter: the wall street journal says governor cuomo wants to jump start long- delayed plans to overhaul penn station. that would include moving amtrak's waiting area across the street to the farley post office, and according to the report, redeveloping the n.j. transit and long island railroad concourses. >> they have the worst commutes in the country on long island. average commuter spends nearly three work weeks sitting in traffic every year. >> answer is improving your mass transportation system. >>reporter: yesterday the governor outlined a plan for another long-delayed project, a 9.8-mile third track expansion on the lirr from floral park to hicksville. earlier plans displaced 200 homes. mile of mineola would lose five feet of back yard land. homeowners would be compensated. 30 businesses would have the option of paid relocation. >> is it going to be a fair eminent domain? >>reporter: you sound skeptical. >> yeah, i am. and back to penn station, that gentleman i spoke with at the beginning of the piece said in addition to escalators, he'd also like to see better places to sit, better bathrooms as well. so we do hope to learn alexander hamilton bridge has cleared, but behind it it has toll plaza at the george washington bridge. 20-minute wait at the lincoln, 10-minute at the holland, so maybe best to go out of your way. assaulted on her way home from the glosh store in brooklyn and the attack is all caught on camera. >> police hopes the video helps them nab the robber. cbs 2's meg baker reports. >>reporter: you can see in this surveillance video it was a wet, rainy night in bushwick, brooklyn. a woman carrying her groceries home on bleaker street towards irving avenue jumped from behind by two men. >> down the corner from here. [ indiscernable ] two skinny guys. i don't know. >>reporter: we spoke to the woman's neighbor who saw her right after the attack that took place on sunday, december 27th around 7:00 p.m. he says she was shaken but luckily unharmed. he can't believe this happened only steps from their apartment building. throw the 45-year-old woman to the ground, stealing her bag with $600 in it. the men ran off towards irving avenue. police say the suspects not only grabbed for her purse, but grabbed at her neck, looking to rip off any jewelry she was wearing. >> a couple of weeks ago there was a shooting right here on nickelback avenue, so, just gotta be careful. >>reporter: miguel who lives in the neighborhood says he is always cautious around here. >> just don't walk at night. if you walk by night, walk with with somebody else. >>reporter: colin mallory lives a few doors away from where the woman was robbed and says he sees nypd circling the area a lot. >> with the police presence, you would think it wouldn't be happening. >>reporter: the victim tells police both suspects reeked of marijuana. they are described as hispanic males in their 20s, approximately 5'5" tall. one suspect last seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt, sweat pants and black sneakers. the other attacker you can see has long hair. he was last seen wearing a colored sweatshirt with a logo on the front, a baseball cap, black sweat pants and white sneakers. in bushwick, brooklyn, meg new york state is helping recent college graduates dealing with student loan debt on december 31st the state began accepting applications for the get on your feet loan forgiveness program. the program allows recent college graduates living in the state to pay nothing on their student loans up to the first two years out of school. more than 2,500 graduates from the class of 2015 have already applied. federal health officials say too many young people are seeing ads for electronic cigarettes there. is a ban on tv commercials and other types of marketing for regular cigarettes but there are no restrictions on ads for e-cigarettes. the feds just released a national survey of 22,000 middle and high school students. 70% say they'd seen e-cigarette advertisements, mostly in stores. well, get your thumbs ready, twitter may be expanding its 140-character limit. the technology news service recode reports the social media giant is working on a product that would allow users to share longer content. twitter's founder and ceo neither confirmed or denied it, but in a tweet jack dorsey indicate they may enjoy having more characters. some of the rumors are 10,000 characters. >> that's quite a few, right?
